I agree with the second half of what you said. I let our Disney AP's expire because I simply didn't feel like we were getting a good deal with them, and I feel exactly the opposite about Universal and have been contemplating upgrading us all to the Premiere Pass. There is a lot more to this statement, but I don't want to go down another tiresome rant in another thread where it doesn't belong.
Skull Island is going to hopefully bring a whole lot of relevance to Kong, and if it works could lead to an interesting new business model where a planned A list property has a theme park attraction open nearly alongside the movie. It would generally be a huge gamble, but if it pays off could be a major boon to both sides.
A lot of people on here feel the same as you as do many families with teens or thrill seekers. However he s right, Disney has something that Uni hasn't matched yet. They are trying very hard and will some day. Uni knows what they need to do and are doing it. With more family rides that all ages can ride. The older and younger crowd need things for them to do before Uni can completely compete with Disney. They also need to improve customer service. While Uni is not bad, it can be better. I dealt with customer service a ton when my son was alive and I can say that Uni was not as good. Surprisingly Sea World had the best. They also had the best first aid, because Disney is also not perfect in this area and their first aid was just not good at times.
Disney makes people feel special with many of their experiences. People may laugh at the meet n greets, their added scavenger like games, and bibidi thingy. But those things actually make a child feel special. Those things add the extra value to the park and really something to the family experience. But Uni is starting to do more stuff like this too.
Trust me, I used to go to the parks a ton. I am pretty sure in the one year I probably went to one of the parks (SW, Uni, DW) about 60+ times in one year. I also talk to a ton of people, I tend to be a more social person. Plus people always come up and talk with people with young kids. I have no clue what that is all about but people always would start talking to my daughter. People were also curious about my son and would ask questions. The feeling people have is that Uni is not for them. They are not roller coaster people, not thrill seekers, have kids too young, parents who are too old, etc. Even though they have done a fantastic job with theming with the new areas, I have even heard from some people that they don't feel as immersed as they do with Disney.
So basically Uni needs to change the parks (they are fully in the process of doing this) and then figure out a way to get people to try their parks. Each time they open a new IP based ride they actually manage to bring some new people in. So they are also working on this. But it will take time.
As an AP holder, I find value in all three park passes. But I love what uni has to offer that is new, but I love watching my daughters face light up in Disney. Sea World has amazing holiday events.
