Original concept was to retell the movie, basically.

That's what Disney does. I certainly hope that is not the current plan.

I have worries it'd be "Penguins are boring and smell terrible 2.0" from the ride system.

But the plan seems to be to populate it with lots of AAs and some pretty neat looking sets. It never looked as complex as Mystic Manor but it certainly seemed beyond Penquin Poo Scootaloo.

If they are looking for a ride for kids? That scenario is perfect. Little kids love feeling like they are part of the adventure, love feeling like they are helping. Think of every interactive stage show that asks for volunteers from the audience and all the kids jumping up and down to HELP.

The most emotionally poignant moments of the movie are when the pets interact with or do something for their owners. Our protagonists (Duke and Max) are entirely motivated by servicing their owner. The ethical nature of this subservience is flirted with via the "Flushed Pets," but it's all very surface level. I expected a little more - it misses the heart that elevates Despicable Me.

I guess when I see it I will understand what you are saying. But seeing the trailers I expected very little interaction with the owners of the animals.

Guests want more than charming attractions these days. They want a story that makes sense. A beginning, middle and end that has a good flow. It isn't good enough to be charming they want the right to have a "point" Isn't that one of the big complaints about the Frozen ride? That the story is disjointed? Confusing? It appears to be very charming, but that is not good enough for today's theme park guests.

I'm not going to search which page it was on, but wasn't the concept that floated around was that of Norman being lost in New York? It seems to me like they could tell a new story while retaining the locations in the movie (apartments, sewers, sausage factory).

And I too liked the movie. No, it was no masterpiece (the sausage scene was a little cringe-worthy), but it was still pretty good. The only problem with it was that it didn't seem to have the emotional push you'd expect from a pets movie. However, anyone who ever loved an animal will probably find themselves shedding a couple tears during the last few minutes.

I think as long as you are caught up in the experience of a ride the story in not so important. There are many rides I love where I know there is a plot but I am more caught up in the individual scenes. When I have a gun/cannon in my hand all I care about is the score.

When I ask people if they liked a ride they often talk about their favorite parts. Never heard anyone talk about the story. When in comes to IP rides people already know the story. They ride it to live in that world for a few minutes.

As for Frozen, it uses a boat ride that was short to begin with. Instead of the Disney habit of retelling the story it was more like an extended meet and greet. I applaud them for being original. Blame short on the decision to refit an existing short ride.

Yeah, I agree with you. That's why I said "basically' instead of "exact". The background sets, pacing and scene progression were about the same as the movie. The reason for the journey and interactions may be different.

Variety has upped their opening weekend estimate to 95-99 million. A million here and million there and soon you are talking about real money.

This film seems tangentially interested in exploring that theme here and there but the plot doesn't come close to exploring it in the same way Toy Story did for instance. The end is charming in concept, but ultimately unearned because they never stop to explore any of these questions in a serious manner. And right when they seem like they're about to, the film has a serious case of ADD and completely abandons it.

Has construction actually started in Hollywood? Or is all the speculation now when it might start in Orlando?

I may have said this before, but what intrigues me the most about this project is this could take advantage of the trackless technology in ways NO ONE has done yet.

As it stands Pooh's Hunny Hunt is still the gold standard of using trackless technology, and no other trackless darkride has touched it. (Mystic Manor has amazing projections, but it's fairly basic in what it does with the trackless RV's.) It also features a element which has great potential for trackless darkrides, and if SLoP features that element, that alone is going to make it stand out over any other trackless darkride. It really helps that the characters in SLoP are small enough for it to be feasible and I hope they do it.

Luigi's at DCA does this with passenger-led vehicles and it's pretty neat even without the massive theming.

If SLoP does it, it would be the first time we have animatronic rv's for that type of attraction. (The pot of Heffalumps and Woozles in Pooh's Hunny Hunt is only static figures) I've always felt there's a boatload of potential with trackless darkrides, and having animatronics moving around right there with you certainly would add a nice element to things since you're really with the characters instead of watching them up on a platform.

That's actually what I like about Frozen. It avoids the same mistake made by Mermaid.
