I don't disagree there's a way to make it work, I just don't think it'll be a true BTTF experience without the actors. While the cast of Jaws is great, it's the shark that's the star of the movie. You need him in that ride. In Back to the Future, the car isn't the star. Sure it's iconic, but I don't think anyone could've just come in and drive the DeLorean (Just ask Eric Stoltz). Fox and Lloyd added that extra charm to the films.
It will be interesting to see the future of deep fake technology and how it's used in parks in the future. In just a few years the technology has come a long way and with The Irishman, they filmed the current day actors and it took quite a while for ILM to render all the work (I think nearly 2 years). There were no facial dots or balls or any kind of mocap accessories needed. It was all done with a 3 camera rig with the actors.
Now I believe I read it can be done in as little as 2 hours and they say that in the next couple years it will be able to be done in real time so a director will see the digitally created characters in a monitor instead of the stand in actors.
Imagine an experience at a park where real actors act out something and, in real time, through deep fake technology, it renders on the screen with long dead actors and actresses appearing lifelike on screen while interacting with audiences in real time. Imagine a photo realistic Michael J Fox getting into the Delorean, stopping, and pointing out into the audience and saying, "Let's go back to the future...except for that woman in the Mickey ears. Wrong park lady!"
There's the whole moral conundrum, NIL and paying royalties to estates, permissions, etc. But I think something like this, having been done in movies for years to de-age actors or to bring deceased actors back on screen for sequels long after their demise (with hit or miss results), is laying the groundwork for something that I think themeparks would be eager to try out.
Personally, deep fake technology terrifies me (imagine the kind of propaganda that could be used during the current war in Ukraine if you could have Joe Schmo go on camera as Zelenskyy saying ridiculous things or committing criminal acts), but I think it's only a matter of time until it's used for entertainment purposes in parks.
