Great shot! I really need to go to CityWalk really late (like 1am) and do pictures then to avoid the crowds.

I only shoot in RAW anymore, unless I'm just playing around or letting a friend use the camera, then its back to JPEG.

Does it help with image clarity and editing?

I also shoot in RAW. Shooting in that setting gives you a larger file and more info in yourr photo to work with during post processing. Dont think image quality really is much different between the two. Check out Dpreview. Com, they usually test the cameras and post RAW vs Jpeg shots.

If you're doing a lot of post-processing, you want to shoot in RAW. Besides giving you more detailed (and probably better) color data, it also acts a a digital negative, as most software is non-destructive to RAW, meaning it works with the data of the file, but creates a separate file when you finish the processing. With JPEG you usually have to work with a duplicate of the original image if you want to maintain the original as well. It is a lot more data (I can only fit about 150-175 RAW files on my 2GB cards vs. almost 500 JPEGs), but pretty much required if you want to do post-processing.

I do a little bit but not on the level other people do. The most I spend editing a single photo is roughly 3 mins

Mine are pure luck

Id say the biggest thing is a tripod or something really stable to rest your camera on. Other than that the rest rest is just finding the perfect balance between shutter speed, aperture and ISO to get the right exposure

Interesting info about RAW. I don't do much post-processing, and whatever I do, it's not with any fancy software (yet). But great knowledge to have for the future when I decide to devote more time to the art of photography, and not just as a side hobby. Thanks guys!

For my trip this weekend, it was my first time shooting in a RAW format. It is not that I process much, but I figure it is best to have a negative that I can someday reprocess if I ever get some ok software and figure out what I am doing. This was also my first time w/ a non-kit lens. I finally got a 35/2 for my Rebel XS. I didn't tote around a tripod and I only used the one lens for this trip. Anyway, here is a night photo I took (and played w/ touching up a little w/ the Canon software that came w/ the Rebel). I probably should have avoided shooting at an ISO of 800 though.
