Las Vegas Casinos On The Verge Of Re-Closing After Barely A Month

"We’ve kind of embarrassed ourselves opening the way we did,” says Vegas-based analyst Jeff Hwang, who predicts another shutdown any day now.

Who could have predicted that sitting in an enclosed casino for hours on end would lead to problems?

Rivers Casino, in Pittsburgh, was shut down for one week, along with bars & restaurants(Indoor dining) Allegheny County. The Rivers Casino will reopen tomorrow, Friday morning, per county directive.

With the growing evidence that COVID is airborne, if I walked into a casino and smelled that inevitable smoke smell, I would panic.

And yet, short of the smoke smell... the air is just as filled with many breaths as your local hardware or convenience store. We all need infrared carbon dioxide glasses and the zig zagging it would cause.

I could be wrong--but I recall Vital Vegas reporting that some of the big Casinos, would be opting to stop the use of cigarette's and tobacco based products, on the casino floor itself to combat that. I could be, absolutely, off-kilter.

Vital Vegas is pretty much clown shoes where COVID is concerned, imo. They're team throw open the doors.

Hard Rock Tampa open with 50% of the slots off, hand sanitizer, occupancy limited to 50%, plexi everywhere, masks required.
They make no mention of their smoking/drinking policy, this is owned/run by the Seminole so tobacco is sacred. They built a slot/game room in a separate building and air handling. Rest was smoking. Took about 3 months for the non smoking parts to reek like the rest.

I like video poker and comped drinks but not with the smell. As an ex-smoker I might be more sensitive to it.

Actually many films (especially blockbusters) gross a higher % from outside the US nowadays

Yea, but studios get less money from that gross than they do from the money made in the US

I thought it was insane people were going to Vegas. I do give them some credit for finally getting their act together and get much tougher at enforcing mask wearing in casinos and freemont street, but in pools and on the streets/Strip, it's 50/50 at best. T

The main excuse? Drinking. Can't drink that alcohol in my hand if a mask is on. So people will walk for blocks with a mask below their chin (if they have one at all) so they can still drink. Also, there's just no one to regulate mask wearing in public areas. Seems people in Vegas will only wear a mask if required to.

And don’t go to casinos.

Or theme parks.

(Also, masks are primarily for the benefit of others, so yes, always wear a mask, but if others aren’t...)

You’re assuming everyone is sitting at home just waiting to return to their job, and that their job is in turn waiting for them. PPP money and extended unemployment are going to run out at just about the same time, and it’s not going to be a fun time.

The fact that some people are “making” more with extended benefits than they were at their job speaks more to the sad state of employee compensation than it does anything else.

Ohhh I agree, I hear people upset they are making more now than normally and I want to be like "isn't that kinda stupid they were making less than this, this is the wage Governments think you need to live and they were making under that"

So yeah, who knows whats going to happen after the benefits end. It's hard to predict anything with the people running the government now, so if they extend benefits I think money won't be as much of an issue and people would spend it on fun things to do if they had the option. But first we have to try to calm the numbers down and then next get tougher on masks rules and then hopefully theme parks and what not can slowly start opening

In regards to the HHN / indoor queue comparison: For an indoor or outdoor queue you move forward based on when each party ahead moves, then just stand on the designated marker, repeat. How can they possibly maintain spacing in a house? Presumably, they will still be dark and ppl rush forward when scared, not really seeing the how close the next party is.. Which inevitably causes people to bunch up, how can they maintain social distancing in that situation? The pause between parties would have to be really long, which would cause longer lines, and when you consider the spacing need in the queue... just how? how they will they have the room to space that out? Cant do switch back lines without barriers, right? I dont envy the people in charge of the logistics that's for sure.

i'm not looking to shoot down HHN happening, I just dont think its truly the same as an indoor queue based on the constant movement.

We are starting to see the repercussions of the explosion of cases in Florida. I truly hope that what we have learned about treatment will improve outcomes. I think it will. I truly hope the virus has mutated to become less dangerous, but I don’t think there’s any evidence for that.

All evidence from within Universal, including the insights of our very reliable insiders, is that HHN is moving forward. I have no special perspective. But if covid behaves in Florida as it has every other place in the world that cases have skyrocketed, I see no way that HHN isn’t cancelled. And, honestly, I think the Orlando parks will close again.

Coronavirus cases spike among TSA officers at Orlando airport

The number of COVID-19 cases among TSA officers working at Orlando International Airport, which had been the nation’s 10th busiest, has risen to 39, or fifth-highest among U.S. airports. That surpasses TSA cases at far larger airports such as in Atlanta, Dallas and Denver. Airports in hard-hit...

“But the agency does not attribute the recent jump in cases to officers’ potential exposure to infected passengers passing through security checkpoints even as the number of outbound travelers is rising.

TSA spokeswoman Sari Koshetz said ‘most, if not’ all infections among TSA staff at Orlando International Airport are occurring while officers are off duty.”

I mean, I don't doubt them being that stupid. But they will have royally screwed their local economy and any employees who went back to work and thus did not collect the last month+ of supercharged unemployment.

Shutdowns cannot be the end-all, be-all policy here. There have to be sustainable ways to live with the virus until vaccine. (That probably means no indoor dining, no movie theaters, no indoor *anything* where your mask can come off.)
