@omark - we’ve been talking about these same reactions and most were already posted in this thread.

While the reactions are great, I am still looking at Tuesday when the embargo fully drops. We have to keep in mind the people that are saying these things were at the premiere in London and after 13 years were the first critics to see it, so there’s certainly some excitement that I’m wondering if it’s pouring into their reviews or not.

I’ll be stoked if the film really is that good. I’m planning on seeing it in IMAX 48 fps 3D on Thursday night so I’m glad I’m getting the optimal theatrical experience. Looking around I’ve noticed a good 75-80% of showings are in 3D so this movie is primed to open to an extraordinarily high % of money from 3D.

All this talk of Cameron raising the bar and I can't help but think of:

I wonder if this will blow up in Disney’s face and cause market confusion?

Seems they want to try and push it closer and closer to $3B. Currently the total is $2.922B.

Eh. With China loosening restrictions and downplaying the virus many people are probably going to flock to see both in the coming months.

Also considering the original's success overseas, and also the limited slate of communist approved Hollywood film every year, I don't think there is an easier layup for wide success.

It's also James Cameron.

Can't wait for the review embargo to lift to get more solid takes... But if the criticism holds up we might see another long run, with major records broken.

What exciting times ahead!

I’m sure this really pisses Cameron off. He has to miss his first Hollywood premiere in 13 years because he has COVID.

With the Hollywood premiere though, we should be hearing more reactions soon and then the embargo lifts tomorrow at noon EST.

People in China were literally yelling in protests that they wanted to see Avatar, I think they know the difference.

Hey, I know it's super popular in China, my point was doing it the same week you do run a risk of confusion for the average movie goer. Of course I guess if demand is super pent up for the new movie it's a good opportunity to just grab a few million extra added onto the original movie.

non-spoiler reviews. It seems while many are really enjoying the film, not everyone is sold on the 48fps. Seems to work for wide shots and look weird in close ups according to a few people.

Also, the movie has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% through the first 109 reviews.

I'm going to enjoy it i bet as much as the first film but bet it's honestly not much better then a Marvel film yet people will see this...because

I see everyone making a big deal about how much it costs. It cost $250M. The money he put into tech is going to push forward the CGI industry going forward so much for one. Secondly, a movie like The Gray Man, Red Notice and Extraction all cost over $200M and have meh stories and Netflix makes no money back on those movies. The Irishman cost $250M.

Maybe i'm crazy, but approving a $250M sequel to a movie that made $2.92 BILLION and is the highest grossing movie of all-time is worth the risk.

My point is if your spending this much money to make this epic........do hire a writer with some interesting ideas.

Once again, what do movie goers want...the same stuff but Shiny or new? Because all I hear is people not wanting to go see the crap in theaters but because this is "epic" thats cool if the story is whatever.

I'm not even trying to crap on the film, its just strange James goes after Marvel when this seems to fit in the same genre and seeing reviews be like the story is fine...why is James crapping on Marvel. Is this film really going to be better then Dr Strange or Thor....just because the CGI is better. To me movies are more then just cool effects

Where is the MCU at when it comes to screenwriting though over the entirety of Phase Four though? Wakanda Forever is okay and through a Certain lens, so is Eternals, but overall, the MCU has been pretty meh of late.

And yes, even without seeing it, I have 100% faith I will enjoy it more than Thor because I despised that movie. Dr. Strange was fine, but again, it's another Phase 4 movie that just sort of happens.

Look at the biggest movie of the year - Top Gun: Maverick. That has an okay script, but the reason it did so well is absolutely not because people loved the story. It's because people loved the RIDE. The EXPERIENCE. It was one of the rare movies that you absolutely needed to see in a cinema and is just not the same at home, and I think Avatar 2 will perform the same way, especially with how much money it's projected to make out of China.
