It's not that huge. A true premium skyrocketed $300, but the other, lesser one has all the benefits at $200 cheaper, just with the last two weeks of December removed. You'd have to be insane to want to go during those weeks, and hilariously enough, are not guaranteed entry since the parks usually fill to capacity. It's a smart move by Disney to ease on Christmas crowds.

Otherwise... it's the bi-annual increase and it's whatever.

Since they're still offering monthly payments, I'm comfortable with this. Why? Because as much as everyone is complaining in my circle of friends, and I will admit I was shocked, I WILL say this: I'm happy with this. The parks are too over crowded, and more than 50% of the time they're so overcrowded that it sucks the fun out of everything. They HAD to do something. It's supply and demand.

The parks are packed to the brim, and are only becoming more popular. They had to do something to make them manageable again, as much as it hurts those who can't afford it.

Also, the top two passes now included unlimited Ride photos and PhotoPass, which is brilliant! I'm definitely renewing once my Premium pass expires next year, because it's still worth it for how often my family and friends go and the amount of fun we have is priceless.

And honestly? Still more bang for your buck than Universal Studios Hollywood....

I made this example to a few of my friends. Disneyland and Universal Studios are luxury entertainment experiences, like Broadway shows. You get rides, shows, fireworks, customer service, etc etc. They have to create a safe environment, give top notch service, safe and high tech rides, extravagant shows and decorations, and pay cast members and ACTORS. AND they're going to be expanding! It doesn't come cheap. It just became cheap for a while due to the economy crashing and tourism going downhill.

If you can't afford it, either make it work or straighten out your priorities in life. Disney isn't a right. Disney can't and shouldn't cater to everyone's financial needs, even though they still do. The SoCal passes are still dirt cheap! Can't afford the most expensive pass? Get a different one!

What they've done the past 10-15 years is offer a discount AP program for a luxury item. It's as if Maestro's or Ruth's Chris Steakhouses offer their $60 steak and lobster for $9.95 plus free champagne for a whole year. Or Louis Vuitton offering a luxury handbag for $50. It doesn't work that way. It's about time Disney changed it. They were underpriced. I'd love to see a Broadway show for $10. But that's not how life works.

(Universal is a bit overpriced in Hollywood though, in my opinion)

Supply and demand. Disney needs to keep its integrity. I don't want to be in an overcrowded environment for over 80% of the year. It's unpleasant. I'm happy this is happening, and the digital downloads are icing on the cake. It's all worth it.

This isn't change for the sole purpose of profit. I hope the outcome is positive.

Agreed. If anybody doesn't feel it's a good value due to what's closing, that's fine. Don't go. Because Disney isn't going to see a change and as a result will obviously get MORE crowded due to decreased capacity. Add in the fact that you will have APers storming the resort at the exact same time to view Fantasmic and ride the railroad for the last time for 18 months. Hell, I'm even tentatively planning to go out in early Dec.

They needed a game plan and this is it. The parks are crowded, period. It's not like Disney is going to refuse entry to tourists because DL is supposed to be a "locals only" park. Locals are a huge factor for DL's attendance but they're also making things miserable at the same time. It's a luxury, but at the same time a great deal. So, yes I'm perfectly fine with this and any future increase.

And also, I'm sure eventually a few years after Star Wars, the prices will "stabilize" out and stay relatively the same. I doubt they'll make it so expensive eventually that even rich folks will roll their eyes.

Unless of course....the parks get even more crowded.

In that case, I hope they'll green light a 3rd gate ASAP. I genuinely believe a 3rd gate will help things out.

I'm not particularly upset with this price increase considering the points others have made above, but keep in mind that this gives USH the opportunity to make their Potter price hike soon and still look like a better value than Disneyland.

The third gate is not going to happen for a while. They have to get stuff approved and then find the space to tear it all down and build. The Star Wars expansion is going to be the big capacity monster for DLR. It would be great if they opened up that rumored Marvel coaster for DCA, but that doesn't seem like it's going to happen. That would really help balancing things out.

Well aware of that, never said it was happening anytime soon...

Of course they'll focus on expanding Disneyland and DCA first, but the 3rd park IS happening....it's not an if, but a when. I predict it'll be announced once Bog Iger's replacement takes office so that it'll be his pet project.

I understand the logic of the price hikes, but I still don't see why some people seem to be relishing the fact that some fans are now priced out.

I'm priced out of Aulani at the moment....and it's my dream to go....but I'm not complaining. I can't afford a trip to Orlando right now....but I'm not complaining. I can't go to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse every single day for a discontinued price. That's life. Disneyland is over crowded right now and is starting to become an unpleasant experience a lot. They had to do something.

Everyone against the price increase have yet to suggest a way they think would be a better way to control overcrowding. Only one I've heard is "get rid of monthly payments", which would be worse than a price increase and a PR disaster IMO.

I wonder why they haven't said anything about the possible Marvel expansion? It just seems like a logical thing to do with DCA, especially with how popular Marvel is.

It's not about pricing people out of going to the park in general, it's about pricing them out during certain periods that's I'm specifically talking about. There are some people who probably got priced out of going period, and that's a bummer but of course Disneyland and theme parks are not a right. The difference between a Six Flags and a Disney park is gigantic, and since 1955 there has been such a gigantic boon in the theme park industry that when you place Disneyland on top of it all (which most people tend to do), why shouldn't they act like a luxury in some ways? This is for DLR only, of course, WDW has far more problems that complicate it majorly.

That said, usually AP price hikes last about a day or two of controversy, but this has continued longer than I've ever seen before. It's amazing that the mere existence of a $1,049 pass (which is the same as the $850 one, just including the two busiest weeks of the year) has people so determined to kick and scream against all logic presented to them, and some using that opportunity to create more frevor and misinformation to drive a negative narrative. A good deal of it is the "Universal rules, Disney drools" and vice-versa being spilled in as well, which makes things even more infuriating to listen to. It's like it's rocket fuel for anybody who is just ready to tear into them because they've been foaming at the mouth to for so long.

And why? Because it's cool to hate on Disney, and that's only because it's so extreme in the opposite direction where it's not cool to criticize Disney ever. Let's use two podcasts' respective audiences as a comparison test:

Parkscope is always commenting on how they get 1-star reviews on iTunes because they bitch about Disney a lot. Yes, it is pretty true that they say more negative things than positive things about Disney, but they're not a Disney podcast and the hosts keep talking about how they do love Disney, they just aren't fans of how Disney is executing its current operations specifically in Orlando. On numerous occassions, Joe and Sean lob heaps of praise on Disneyland (and Tokyo), but this is largely ignored because I mean, how dare they say bad stuff about Disney!

Coaster Radio is an interesting podcast because it's one of the few where the major listeners are those who enjoy reigional Cedar Fair or Six Flags parks. (after all, it's called Coaster Radio) This is extremely evident because the show awards the best ride of the year award via audience poll, and the Disney/Universal rides are always runner-ups and it's almost always a new coaster somewhere in the midwest that wins the prize. (for example, last year King's Island's "Banshee" won out against Gringott's... which got third behind a new plug-and-play Zamperla coaster at CONEY ISLAND) One of the hosts, Mike Collins, does love Disney parks quite a bit and does talk about them every now and then but every year the listener survey tells them that a good chunk of people despise the Disney talk and even choose to skip over those episodes. Keep in mind, them talking about Disney is rather rare... they talk about Universal a little more. And yet people still hate that small amount of talk, just because it's Disney.

The two sides just feed each other in an unhealthy fashion, and boy am I sick of it.

^ On point.

Also, I wanna bring something else up. Some people may now be priced out of the TOP OF THE LINE annual pass. That doesn't mean Disney completely priced them out. They're still offering the least expensive SoCal pass for like $19 a month! If you can't afford the more expensive pass anymore, they still have OPTIONS. People just want what they've been used to for a lower price.

Like, I'm seeing people complain "oh, now my family of 7 can't go anymore, we can't afford 7 $1000 passes, and can't do $80 per month per pass, Disney priced us out!"

Um....get the lower end pass. You won't go as often but still have over ONE HUNDRED days to choose from. Won't be as convenient but it's still dirt cheap and you get to go more than a tourist who paid for one day or an expensive multiple day package.

I don't get people sometimes.

The positive news is that the single day ticket price did not rise. This seems to indicate that Disney thinks they reached max price point they can sell regular tickets for without a significant drop in sales. Price increases for single day tickets may be slowing down.

Hi guys. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Has anyone else gotten an email from disneyland resort survey lately? I got one that said it would take 30 minutes to complete, but two minutes in it asked me if I go on any fan sites and it kicked me off.

I really wanted to see what it was asking about. If you get one pretend you've never used the Internet and report back please. Thanks in advance

I sent the following email to Disneyland's online ticketing group:

"Hi, I'm looking at the possibility of purchasing the Disney Signature Plus Passport. It says "No blockout dates*", but the asterisk states "*Passes do not guarantee theme park admission, especially during high attendance periods. Admission to the theme parks and availability of theme park parking are subject to capacity and other closures. Other
restrictions apply."

So if I purchase this passport, I could be blocked out from entering the parking garage as well as one or both of the parks?
Thank you"

Their first response:

"Hello (private)!

Great question! Here is what we mean by that:
During Holiday times at the Disneyland Resort, the parks can be very popular.  While RARE, it is possible that we reach maximum capacity and guest entry may be temporarily stopped. The best way to enjoy the parks during these times and avoid possible disappointment is to arrive early in the day, perhaps at opening time, and plan to stay in the parks the whole day.  While you may certainly exit the parks, re-entry is not guaranteed. Hope this helps! Thank you for being part of our amazing Annual Passholder family. We look forward to sharing this year with you while you create many new memories! Throughout your year, should you have additional questions, please contact us again by replying to this message. Thank you for your message, and have the most magical year!

My follow up question:

Hi (private),

Thank you for getting back to me. So my next question is... If I purchase a Disney Premier Passport, does that contain the same stipulations? As I see on your website (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/passes/premier-passport/) it states "Your Disney Premier Passport has no blockout dates.". Please let me know.

Thank you,

(private)"

Their response:

"Hello (private),

Yes, all the Annual Passport types are subject to capacity regulations should that become an issue on any given day.  It is rare for this circumstance to occur, but has traditionally happened on 2-4 days of the course of a calendar year in the most recent years.   This is as specific as I am able to get on the subject, but I do hope it helps to set your mind at ease and clear up any confusion regarding the stipulation you have asked about.

We look forward to seeing you in the parks soon!

(private)

If they can not guarantee me that I have 365 days of access for that kind of money ($1,349 or $1,049) why get it? One or more of those "4" days might be a blockout day. Remove the monthly payment option and that might help with their attendance issue(s). Just my $0.02.

That's the way Disney has always been, or at least the past 10-15 years, they're almost always at capacity during December 24th and 25th, and 31st, and sometimes during 4th of July. They legally can't guarantee admission on an at-capacity day because legally they can only allow so many people into the park/have a set limit that either they implemented or the fire marshals implemented. I think it's a very fair policy, and to avoid it, you should go in at the beginning of the day, as they suggested.

That's why when I do renew in April, we'll get the Signature, not the Signature plus, since we hate going between the 25th and 31st anyway, it's unbearable.

Just found this (Disneyland 50th Anniversary Sizzle Reel), not the best quality but it's still memorable.

Disney is now testing a new Fastpass technology at space mountain. It looks pretty cool!
