I think a lot of y'all just don't like rollercoasters like that... and that's ok.

But you have to stop with the "they're all the same," or "this could be at Six Flags" stuff. No one is out here doing it like they've been doing it over the past decade. The scale, the layouts, the way they thoughtfully integrate them into the visual space of their lands-- it's the best in the world!

I'm sorry they're not dark rides. But y'all act like they're junk.

This is a whole other philosophical discussion that we should probably have around here at some point.

Because I don’t think it’s a question of liking or not liking coasters. I do think there’s a line of conversation about what level of theme and design makes a coaster worthy of being in a theme park, though. And even more broadly, what distinctions should exist between theme parks and amusement parks.

But that's not germane to this thread!

I think your last sentence kinda gets glanced over a bit. It's acknowledged, but I don't think it's really being considered, sorta.

COVID happened, so things had to get shuffled. In some ways, that probably worked out for the better, and in others... not so much. If we're just counting USF right now, we have the Finn's redo, HMU redo, a big HHN 35 event, the coaster, and whatever replaces FF.

But at some point, everything Universal has done - and is doing - across the resort has to count when we're asking what they're doing and why the timeline looks the way it does.

I know we'd all love to know when USF gets its next Diagon-level project ASAP. I just don't think "I thought it would've happened by now" necessarily means Universal is doing something wrong, per se.

It doesn't mean that. I agree. They're responding in the ways that they think would be best for them, and making those decisions without our knowledge of the rocky 2020s they were barreling into.

And they have done a lot of quieter, un-Billboardable upkeep in this time. Much of the resort is more polished than its' ever been, and in a few ways, far more polished than the Mouse next door. For all my aesthetic issues with it, USF feels significantly less "Dead mall-y" than some portions of DHS; and I'm very interested to see how River Adventure looks once it returns from under the knife.

I do personally believe they made a not insignificant number of poor decisions in that time, but time and money are not unlimited and most Universal rides have third-party entities controlling the way things are handled, so I can imagine that a portion of those decisions were simply the best that they could've done at that point.

Dreamworksland is an obviously budget-strapped half-fix of a redevelopment, but it's still pretty obvious that certain teams behind the project knew the park needed help and spread that very limited budget remarkably far (New E.T. signage and paint, infrastructure for a new Dreamworks show, Shrek's House, Po Living Character, the Pinocchio animatronic, the PiB 3D game). I think a lot of Nintendoland's design is an operational nightmare, and that the rides are mostly mediocre, but Nintendo is incredibly hands-on and obtuse, and there are a great many signs that UDX creative and operations have wanted to do much more with the IP than they have been able to.

It's entirely understandable. With that said - I can't get excited for consistently understandably mediocre projects.

UDX has hit a number of unimaginably critical home-runs. They did change the game with Wizarding World in the 2010s, and they've forced Disney out of hibernation, which is tremendous for this space. Volcano Bay is a very solid water park and HHN has grown consistently in quality, budget and attendance year after year. I will continue to appreciate UDX in those lanes.

Those additions bought them a lot of good will, at least for myself. In the late 2010s and early '20s, it was easier to ignore the chintzy older lineup, or the middling newer additions like Kong, Fallon, Villaincon, because the hope was that they were going to change the game again with Epic. Disney certainly believed that was a possibility. You had Chapek talking down the wild success of Hagrids ahead of SW:GE, and their $60 million reinvestment plan back in 2023 had a number of reasons behind it, but increasing competition was a definite factor.

And for me, I don't believe that happened. Epic is not a game-changer. It was a park full of more UDX rides, and outside of coasters, I just don't think they've got it. Numbers aren't looking like they're changing the world. They look like Animal Kingdom; attracting decent crowds and cannibalizing older parks, with an appropriate capacity and headline-spurring response of new attractions for any of the parks still years and years away.

Even if I haven't enjoyed a number of their recent projects, I have always appreciated that UDX has lit a fire under the undisputed king of the industry. I don't believe that Walt Disney World would be anywhere as fresh, bold, or enjoyable for me today without Universal's recent influence. I just wonder what the lineup for WDW projects looks like in 10 years. I don't know if I believe they'll be as bullish as they were in 2024. Epic acts like a regular theme park; UKR doesn't help with brand perception; I think Pokemon will be big, but it won't be Potter; and I don't think a pre-built Party Bus ride themed to the 2024 Twister sequel lights a fire for anyone, really.

Ministry is a bad ride, I will die on that hill. I also don’t think Super Nintendo World is a good themed land — and Mario Kart is also a very so-so ride. Hiccup’s is a tier below “world class,” but still very good.

Monsters is the only ride that even approaches the Rise of the Resistance level that I’m talking about.

Wow… I have very real concerns about Universal’s recent direction, but Ministry isn’t part of that. I just don’t understand the attitudes towards it. I consider it a better ride than Rise, which is very, very good but also very overrated. Both attractions try to put you in the middle of a firefight and Ministry achieves that much better - Rise feels empty and antiseptic, with several of Disney’s patented “look at this flailing AA in a barren room” scenes.

I don't think I can agree with the idea of Pokemon not being Potter big. Pokemon is the single biggest IP in the world... And by a LARGE margin at that. It is going to to have a massive impact on the resort.

This is a fair criticism of Rise, but my issue with Ministry is the writing and sequencing. You spend the first 90 seconds floating near what should've been a preshow, followed by a series of increasingly awkward line reads and a dull, unconvincing, been-there-done-that simulator sequence that takes the wind out of the preceding Death Eater fight scene. Maybe if the physical railing and drop remained, I'd feel differently... and even now, I don't know if I'd call it a "bad" ride, but it is a disappointing one, at least for me.

Perhaps we are starting to drift too far away from the subject at hand, though...

Thread 'Universal Studios Florida: What Do We Think About It?'

Nov 25, 2023
It’s been a while since we’ve had a dedicated thread to talk about Universal Studios Florida in a broader sense, and rather than keep letting that conversation bleed into other threads (I have been guilty!), I thought it should have its own place.

NOTE: This is not a catch-all thread to post general updates about the park (refurbishments, new entertainment, shopping, dining). This is meant to be a more philosophical discussion about the overall direction in which the park has been going, and where it might be going in the future. We could discuss how new offerings might tie into...

Seriously. What’s being said here?

In what world is Mario kart, MoM, Monsters, Stardust, etc not world class?

Hell… constellation carousel is world class. It’s one of the best carousels in the world.

Basically everything about that park is world class from theming to queues to the ride vehicles to the attractions themselves. Name me somewhere else in the world that compares on scale to Mario or MoM even if the ride was unenjoyable or forgettable?

Ridiculous conversation, honestly.

You can hate the ride and find it fully unenjoyable. That’s entirely different than claiming Ministry isn’t a world class attraction. It absolutely is. Its budget alone dwarfs the budget of the entirety of any park in the world not named disney or universal.

Love your takes on 99.9% of stuff but this is unhinged.

Then we may be using a completely different definition of world class! I’m using it to describe the quality of the attraction, not its scope or scale. If that’s the definition we’re using, fair enough — I’m specifically talking about the Goodness or Badness of a particular ride.

(I also do not like Constellation Carousel at all, and I say that as a big lover of carousels, but so it goes)

Someone sort of started one

They said in an edit to their post the thread should be retitled

I think this thread could be the basis, just update the title.

Thread 'Epic Universe- why Hate?'

I’ve seen a lot of negativity around Epic Universe specifically in this forum. What’s the problem with this park? What do you think could have been done with it instead?

NOTE: I’m now thinking this thread should be retitled “Epic Universe- Problems and what can be fixed”

Yeah, when I saw that my first thought was, "do you know any kids?" I don't know if it's Potter-2010-level big, but I think it's the biggest thing left, IP-wise.

People will schedule vacations for Pokemon, but they won't for Twisters. I'd imagine Universal knows that. If they were to open around the same time, maybe the Twisters refresh is a little bit of counterprogramming to give people already at the resort more to do.

I'd love to hash this out, so I think it's a great idea, but I get the sense we'd disagree! There's lots of incredible, real-deal theme parks in Europe with coaster track all over the place. Being pro-exposed-track is one of my big theme park hobby horses, but I don't think there's really a "right" answer. I think there's merit in the more restrained way Disney does things, even if I feel like it's limiting.

I think for what it's worth, Disney historically did at times embrace exposed track (though not with coasters), largely fueled by Walt's love of transit

See: The monorail, skyway, railroad, peoplemover, and generally just how Tomorrowland utilizes Kinetic energy

Sorry for replying in here as I know we're trying to usher the discussion into another thread, but wanted to talk about this particular point
