It's funny you said that. I do the same with Alene. Since she doesn't follow, or really know, anything about any Universal or Disney park, except what she experiences the day of, I use her as my General Public gauge. Of course, tastes vary from person to person, but her views do cut through all the conceptions from knowing as much background as most of us do.

Funnily enough, I do the same with my wife. We’d never done ET in the 3 trips we’d been and I was curious to see her reaction given how far rides had advanced since it opened but she absolutely loved it.

I’d be interesting to start a thread where the members here ask their partner, friend, family member (Basically somebody who isn’t as into theme parks as we are) and ask them what their top 5 rides are in Orlando.

Good idea...... Don't want to sidetrack the thread and name rides, but three of her top five are attractions that the so called "Intelligentsia" readily trash.

That was one of the things that really struck me, that more than any other screen ride, in F&F you really just feel like it is nothing more than a screen. If ever the practical effects don't work, this would be a disaster, as aside from those, the visuals themselves appear very distant. To me it felt very incoherent and far away, no immersion whatsoever. The film, practical effects and the movement of the RV, they all seemed to take place in different realms and did not provide a unified experience. It was like sitting in a car without a roof, watching a movie while it rains, everything is separate.

Whoever thought that sitting and looking to only your right with something to look at for literally three minutes straight is okay once a ride is already in motion should be fired from a theme park design process.
The brightest side of this attraction to me personally is that we have a space in following years for HHN houses and a large building for another try at a large scale theme park attraction in five to ten years.

So what part of the queue can be used for a house? I'm assuming it will replace the MIB tent.

There is a quite a bit of extended queue. available. I am also going to make a bold prediction and say the two preshow rooms are going to be reworked into queues eventually as the live spiel pay actors are a cost that can be changed with some video editing to the monitor footage in those rooms on loop. Between the high capacity and low demand of this attraction in the following years you will have plenty of queue and area to work with for HHN.
Also, as temporary as the MIB tent location is I would not really say replacing as we are going to be up to a ten house count by the time those things change.

This attraction is also probably causing the company(ies) to look at the world of hashtag promoting a little differently in case of a dud or over cynicism of something that did not meet any expectations.

That's my thought. There's more than enough room after the screen to put some post show explosions and effects as a grand finale!

Honestly the removal of 3D made this disconnect and lack of immersion even worse. Removing the 3D from the Hollywood Forbidden Journey and cancelling plans for adding it to ours makes sense because that ride is immersive without it and the glasses make the non-carousel portions dimmer and more distracting in a bad way. For something like Fast & Furious, the 3D is kind of necessary to make the 360 screen convincing by allowing objects in the foreground to appear closer to the vehicles than they are. Removing 3D and keeping the Musion scene in which nothing happens and everyone in the bus has to crane their necks to the right for an eternity are the two biggest screw-ups that were made here. It's like they were actively trying to make this as bad as humanly possible. Even keeping all the same assets from Hollywood, there are ways this could be better.

That's how I feel too, this attraction really needed 3D to be more bearable.

The most tone-deaf and scary part of all of this is that the decision to remove 3D from the ride was made in some ridiculous last-minute attempt to "fix" the issue of having too many 3D attractions in a row. The ride was designed for 3D and they removed it without making any other changes to compensate for it all because they wanted to pretend the ride was something different than it is on the park map by not having to put the 3D glasses logo next to it. Meanwhile, there are portions of the ride film that are clearly SUPPOSED to be viewed in 3D which end up looking even worse in 2D. How were so many poor decisions made in a row here?

Executive#1: "People are sick of 3D rides so let's build a clone of a 3D ride that no one likes but... wait for it... we'll just turn off the 3D effects!"
Executive #2: "Great idea!!!! People aren't sick of screens, they are just sick of putting on glasses... right?"
Executive #3: "Can we also make sure the musion scene is left unchanged? People really thought it was terrible and corny to begin with so I'd like to keep that as-is, please. Just make sure to overdub the audio so it doesn't match the lips on the FBI agent. We want this to be as low-rent as possible.
Universal Creative: You got it! It will take us over 2 years to build this masterpiece and it will take up acres of valuable land. We'll also build the largest queue ever conceived but then also add a virtual queue because reasons.

I got to ride this the first "official" day it was open. I used the virtual line, but found the wait to only be 15 minutes anyway. It was pretty much exactly what I expected. The ride broke down at the end so I got some free express passes to use later on something more worthy, so I came out ahead! To me I can't help but factor in what something replaced when judging it. It replaced a mediocre show and a good/decent ride with a mediocre ride, so to me this is a big net loss for Universal. After having some time to think about it I really think this is a good thing especially considering the timing. I think this is the first real hard failure for Universal under Comcast and may help to put them in check going into creating a new park. I think we all saw this coming and I assume many internally saw this coming as well. Perhaps someone just wasn't listening to the people saying this was a bad idea and maybe those people will have a stronger voice now.

I was curious to see my thoughts from 3 years ago and surprised somewhat to find how dead on to what they are now.

Yeah if this is true I'd rather keep Disaster and/or Beetlejuice. I suppose it's possible that Universal has had such a string of hits that they mistakenly think they can't fail.

I heard this attraction was originally supposed to be a roller coaster/slot car but Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stepped in and wanted it to be a party bus. People who don’t have the creative experience shouldn’t be making crucial decisions.

That info is not correct. The Rock had zero creative input on this attraction.
