Your so funny. Sorry if you got offended over my tree comment, but some people are weird like that. I think my basilisk idea is way better than the whomping willow, but I'm sure i should just take opinions from some kid with an old asian guy as his logo? or whatever that is. It took time and thought to come up with this idea, and if your gonna get mad over a disagreement then you should leave if your not gonna contribute anything useful.

I'm not mad over a disagreement. It's your superiority complex. I also find it funny that you refer to me as some kid when I'm 7 years older than you.

They used to teach that stuff in something called "English Class" but in the interest of "inclusiveness" they changed the curriculum so you were shortchanged. I would blame the system for the fault.

I have English class, but i stopped learning adjectives, pronouns, direct objects, conjunctions, EX. in eighth grade if thats what you mean. Throughout high school I've just been learning about different types of literature.

Quick Lesson just to help:

Your - second-person possessive pronoun - Your watch has the wrong time.
You're (You are) - contraction - You're going to miss the bus.

Their - third-person plural possessive pronoun - Their meal came ten minutes late.
There - adverb (or sometimes exclamation) - There was a web on the ground. (exclamation: There, I told you it really was magic.)
They're (They are) - contraction - They're looking for a new house overlooking a lake.

Happy posting. :)

Yep that is what I meant, used to be by the time you were admitted to HS you had that "stuff" and once you came out of HS you were ready for advanced courses but the "system" has been altered and the fundamentals are no longer taught. Just the dumbing down of society IMO.

Really, In my old elementary and middle school they had Language Arts, where you learned about what we where just talking about and Literature, where you learned about what I'm learning now in HS. IMO that makes more sense, because knowing literature (such as shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe) is much less important than knowing how to talk properly.

I forgot to tell you that I love the thing you have about the monorail announcement that comes up after you've written something. I went to Disney a few days ago after not going in a long while and i remembered what that was.

Don't think you are "dumb" just inexperienced. I was there many moons ago and wish I had continued with formal learning but you do get more with experience. Sometimes it seems spelling and language usage is in the way of ideas being expressed but they are the root of communication and even with textspeak the context of the idea can be lost if the delivery is not what the reader expects.

You have good ideas, just take the time to ensure you communicate them effectively to your audience or they will concentrate on the delivery rather than the message.

Long time reader of these forums, never posted before but I couldn't let this pass. I am a high school English teacher, and this just isn't true at all. All of this "stuff" is still taught in public schools, and if anything the Common Core has improved how the fundamentals of language and grammar are taught. If a student doesn't know the difference between your and you're, they simply haven't been paying as much attention as they should.

And what is being done to ensure the lesson is learned before the student is passed to the next grade? Seems that the pressure to meet the numbers and testing is producing "students" that have little grasp of the fundamentals before they are shuffled off to the nearest STEM class leaving them without the skills to write the papers that will allow recognition and they have to hire writers to get the message delivered.

Real world this is what I am seeing today.

The number of times I see "social managers" allowing typos and poor usage is becoming the norm rather than the exception. The bar has been lowered.

BTW welcome to this forum, it is one of the tamest I know of. Teaching is thankless and you are a saint for doing it.
