also has maybe the worst smell hollywood has ever done. A Quiet Place has great sets and excellent puppets and literally nothing else, very interested to see what I think of it when the event is over.
I think I mentally supressed that smell after the fact. They hyped up how bad Texas Chainsaw would smell but Insidious was genuinely way worse, I'd compare it to Exorcist last year honestly. I think on some level I've gotten desensitized to rot smells at these events but anything trying to smell like vomit or poop or anything else like that I just cannot stand.

Last night was tough! Props to all the employees working last night and throughout this heat wave as I was having trouble just as a guest dealing with the temperature.

@Brian G. said this year is a mixed bag, and I definitely agree. I had a great time in Eternal Bloodlines, A Quiet Place, Insidious, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I also think the Terror Tram was at least changed up enough to make it fun (up until the Purge section). The M3GAN portion was awesome. Lines were manageable all night which was nice, despite the heat bringing down the mood.

The rest of the event was fine. I liked Nightmare Trilogy and Monstrous but personally felt their predecessors were better overall houses. Great set design though in both. Ghostbusters and Dead Exposure landed somewhere in the middle. Even if I didn't love a house, they all had some pretty standout sections.

I am never really impressed with the scare zone themes at Horror Nights, and this year was really no different with Punkz and Skull Lordz. I think that whenever they have a zone on French Street it seems to be the most effective. Luchadores Monstruoso was definitely a highlight! I love the huge crows, so I was happy to see them back.

Lastly, as far as smells go I was most concerned about Texas Chainsaw which ended up not being that bad compared to that vomit scene in Insidious. The heat just made it 10x worse. Be warned!

Been lurking since 2009, the Horror Nights Nightmares days. This is my 13th year attending the event (spooky)! Did Early Entry/General Admission. Got literally EVERYTHING done (minus The Simpsons Ride). Here's the order I tackled everything. Not ready to rank or rate them yet until I've seen them all on a cooler day:

The Weeknd (15 min wait): Honestly surprised I loved this maze! Really disliked the last version, but this one felt more streamlined and fun. Great effects, characters, and set design.

TCM (25 min wait): Some truly great scares in here and some really unnerving set design, things you need to push through, etc. Not the most memorable by the end of the night, but excited to go through this again another night.

Dead Exposure (20 min wait): Okay, I really loved this. Been seeing some disappointment with the quality of sets, but I thought it worked really well! Loved stuff like the blood smears you follow on the ground. Thought the theming and scares worked for me, making this one of my favorites of the night.

Universal Monsters (35 min wait): Honestly, just skip this and save some time. There were a couple cool monsters, but the repeating narration, black walls, and general laziness is so apparent, just like last year's. With projects like the Wolfman movie coming out, it makes no sense to me why Universal refuses to put money into these mazes. They have so much potential and used to be so good!

Then got all the lower lot rides done in roughly 40 minutes.

Monstruos (10 min wait): Kind of a mash up of past Latin mazes. The El Cucuy part was exactly the same as that maze however many years ago. But this was sooo impressive! Really love this maze and even though it's short, it exits into the scarezone, so is just an all around great experience.

A Quiet Place (30 min wait): This was good! Had some really effective scares and even though it's basically a copy of last year's Stranger Things maze, I really enjoyed it! And mostly just glad they included the white board with "What is their weakness?" on it.

Insidious (55 min wait): The board said 30 minutes, so this wait was a bit of a bummer. Especially in that parking lot! But the maze was good. Lots of cool scenes and monsters. Didn't scare me too much, but enjoyed how long is was.

Ghostbusters (5 min wait): Okay, hear me out-- this maze was awesome! I admittedly haven't seen the movie it's based on, so it felt like a really fun original Ghostbusters maze. The sets and effects were great and this maze felt maybe the most cohesive of the mazes I went through. Just a blast from beginning to end! Took me by surprise.

Here I did Flight of the Hippogriff and Forbidden Journey, both with no wait. Super bummed about the lack of Death Eaters and vibe here!

Terror Tram (20 min wait): Oof. Bad year for the tram. Liked some of the scenes and the added Hollywood Sign, but the removal of Nope neutered the whole attraction. There's nothing that new or interesting here. I'd suggest skipping and waiting for next year. Maybe the closure of the Wolfman section ruined the sense of finality Nope gave, but I doubt it would have helped much.

Late Night With Chucky (10 min wait but somehow was led into the Express Lane, so the wait was much longer for others): LOL this show sucks so bad but I had a blast. Mostly complete silence in the audience, but it's roughly 10 minutes of air conditioning, so what more could you ask for? Has the ability to improve over time as the performers get into their stride, but may be better by just bringing up an audience member to be roasted instead. I was crying of laughter at how bad this all was.

Purge: Dangerous Waters (12:30am show, started at 12:40am due to rehearsal delays that we could overhear): I mean, this show is such an awesome way to close the night. Felt more streamlined than last year's with more effects and stunts. This show is just such a blast, literally, and such a great addition to the event. I'm glad it's back and better than before.

Overall it's a good year! Could really use the Nope set or investment in some finale to TT, Deatheaters, and some sort of mid-season investment in the Monsters house. I also hope they soft open up Super Nintendo World by the end of the event (Maybe November like they did with Harry Potter that one year?) But the mazes are honestly all consistently good (minus THAT one). So for an "off" year, I'm honestly really happy with it! Hopefully we have some lower crowds and can all get our reps in. Felt very old timey HHN last night with the thin crowds!

Tip: Bring an empty water bottle and fill it throughout the night! Also sunscreen and a hat! You won't regret it!

It honestly is. The quality and execution has just nosedived over the years, which makes no sense because it’s the marquee Universal horror property. You’d think it would get as much if not more effort and attention than any other house.
As a Monsters fan, it puzzles me that even though the quality has noticeably decreased year by year, they still continue to test well. Hard for them to justify throwing more money at it especially when the minimal effort versions test just fine.

The noticeable dip did start happening right after the second Stranger Things maze came out and died on impact. Maybe they are trying to spend more of their resources on licensed material to keep their IP-holders happy? And so Monsters is getting the shaft? It’s all so confusing to me…

I've no idea why they don't just do solo Monsters houses. I know I'm just one fan, but I feel the GP would love them too. A black and white Dracula house? A solo Wolfman house?

Instead we get "Eternal Bloodlines". lol.
I think it would be really cool to do solo, stylized mazes. I was shocked they didn’t lean into that further last year. Having it be B&W, or no dialogue at all, would’ve been really cool.

Not really sure how that would work with Creature - maybe bring back 3D?

Night 2 Review: Omg I can't believe I stayed until close again! :skull::zzz:

Despite tonight being significantly busier than opening night, it was still fun! There was a point around 10pm-1130 the waittimes were at their worst. So I got food (chicken Caesar salad from Minion Cafe). Then couldn't decide what to do so I got a blinky cup drink & wandered over to the last Purge showtime (1230am). Afterwards I rushed down to hit houses with a low waittime, then rushed back up to end with Monstrous (which is what I also started my night with).

Terror Tram exists. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Definitely not worth skipping though..

STILL have yet to do Chucky, Ghostbusters & Insidious. Could've done Chucky, but chose Monstrous to end my night. Insidious had a ridiculous line all night. And I wasn't going to trek all the way to Ghostbusters if I couldn't do Insidious too.

Skipped TCM tonight because long waittimes most of the night.

Even though the temp stayed in the warm 80s, there ended up being some wind for a nice cool breeze. That made the night tolerable.

I got to do Dead Exposure completely alone. That was fun, ended up finding new scares... well.. they found me. :eyes::skull:

Opening Night and Opening Friday complete! And ain't going again till next Sunday, these 2 days were completely different experiences god lord (both positive and negative). Overall this year was great I feel like it was more consistent (minus 1) compared to last year or even 2022 but had fewer standouts and highs than them as well.

Houses (+Tram): Initial First Impressions
Changed really drastically from Hype to Opening Night to Yesterday. I don't wanna put a definitive pin on where they would place cuz of this heat and almost half the cast for some of these houses were nonexistent. I get it, they have a really good excuse but this just kills some of the house's energy and "stories" for them. I will need more runs to judge but for now, this is the initial ranking

1. A Quiet Place
The stand-out of this year, just like Chucky last year but on a much bigger scale and scary! Not scary scary, but it has some surprises (like Cillian Murphy lol). The Death Angel animatronics were next level! The scale of both them and the sets were super immersive, it felt like an insane Dark Ride and was hitting all throughout. The Quiet aspect of a Quiet place is a fun gimmick in concept but it doesn't really do much in the house, the audio was standard just no music which I think helps the scares when it goes from quiet to LOUD in a second!
2. Monstruos Dos: The Nightmares of Latin America
The Nightmares of Latin America, I am not sure I'm flip-flopping on whether I like Dos or Uno.
This house is being hard carried by El Cucuy and it has the potential to be one of the scariest parts of any Monstruos both years! His new design is just super creepy and all the scenes in the casita and cave had excellent scenery, atmosphere, and scares. However, my gripe that I feel is that this could have just been an El Cucuy house, Charro is fun and his section is actually fleshed out for the 30 seconds we have him, cool ass costume and (insert Peta the horse is here joke). However it's short and Cadejo... dude is just a hallway transition for Cucuy, the puppet doesn't even look like anything from the artwork, very disappointing. Its very uneven but I love El Cucuy's section SO MUCH with El Charro as a bonus. The facade is beautiful and death is once again amazing!
3. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
This is a fun house, all the scenes in this house are very detailed (the Mini Puffs are moving, that is so CUTE! (One was riding a rat XD)) and even tho it isn't scary, there was surprisingly a plentiful of jumpscares making the house feel lively and kinetic. The Ecto was cool! Wish there were more Garraka cuz they only have 2 appearances and one of them is VERY important to the house so it hurts a bit for me if they aren't there. But overall it was a fun house that I thought, was way better than I expected!
4. Insidious: The Further
Feel like this is Unmasked again where it's a good first half, eh middle, and a strong finale. Definitely the scariest house this year, wouldn't say it is scarier than Beyond as I hoped. Scenic tbh I think is on par with Beyond, if not a little more and better consistency with their use of Black walls. They fit here and actually are VERY dark compared to other houses that use them, kept thinking someone would pop up, and nope which adds more suspense and dread, unlike most uses of them.
Its shortcomings however are also similar to Beyond, both did wonders for the recent films (Last Key for Beyond and Red Door for The), every other Demon and Ghost that isn't Red Face gets a cameo, not even a full emphasis on them, just a "aye I remember you" and then back to red face. I think they did better here but it really should have just been the Red Door if they weren't gonna do much with the rest. But the finale is great! Brought me back to 2017!
5. Dead Exposure: Death Valley
This one feels so out of place compared to the rest of the line-up, in a good way. I feel like it could be the Dark Horse of the event given proper staffing and no missing scenes. The Monkeys are a funny way to start off the house that immediately gets scarier and scarier as it goes on. Scenic is a double-edged sword here as I think it's well-themed to the "secret facility" they were going for, but it also results in a lot of this house just being White lol. Pretty good just hoping for a better run.
6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy of Leatherface
This is one of the houses that suffered from staffing issues in the 3 runs I've done, and I can see its potential tbh, the house is very Gorey, very detailed, and dimly lit in amber to give that horror slaughterhouse vibe! I am waiting for a run where I can see every Leatherface because they all look so cool and a varying levels of intensity. Which, this house isn't scary like Blood Brothers or the 2021 variant, some of the scenes were missing (one got close last night) and overall I HOPE I get a better run because I want to like this one more but for now it's disappointing. The facade is menacing tho!
7. The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy
Holy COW that facade is amazing and makes just hanging in the queue line such a VIBE! I was dancing to Blinding Lights XD. The house itself tho is weird, After Hours Nightmare was more cohesive with just the one album and was a lot more fun with the choice of songs and sets. With one it more in line with Dawn FM and the other still left as a mystery album, this house is just weird in tone and vibe. Not bad weird or good weird, just weird. Like some sections, others eh, but overall it's a middle-of-the-road house that is very much carried by that facade!
8. Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse:
I thought they were only gonna give Purgers chainsaws, but then The Grabber, The Butcher, AND The Babyface Killer come out with chainsaws!?! This is already peak, The Megan section is like a showcase of what we could get if she got her own section in a Blumhouse of Horrors, but it wasn't too bad, Freaky and Happy Death Day kinda of get clumped in together, probably the weakest part, but The Black Phone had SO many Grabbers in the span of 5 seconds! they were so aggressive Lol! And The Purge is probably the best well-staffed War of the Worlds area we have had in years, fun actors. No Wolfman, we'll see what happens there but not a bad year for Tram, good actually IMO. I'm not upset we didn't get NOPE.
9. Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines:
I like how they put up signs showing the history of this soundstage. Other than that what happened here? The heat yeah that's one thing, almost every show scene or story beat was completely missing, and if wasn't for the dialogue in those long black hallways I wouldn't have understood the story. Which is funny, RIP Bozo Saskia :skull:.
Which, I ain't even a stickler for Black hallways but why are they even in this one? None of them (yes multiple) have a boo hole so there wouldn't even be a scare in em and become extremely pointless, they just pad out the houses and the actual content of the house is very small and oddly not well lit (sorry Professor). Maybe if I got all the scenes and scares it could be decent but this is the worst Monsters House they've done and a waste of space for a soundstage house. Not even Slash's music was noticeable or memorable enough.

Scarezones:
Not much to say about the scare zones, I like them. Better than the previous 3 years that's for sure. The Skull Lords ceremony was cool but last year's was better. And the chainsaw punkz weren't wearing their jackets which is understandable, their mask are cool but all too similar.
Luchadores wasn't as cool as I think it was trying to be tho the costumes were great and they FINALLY gave it some new music! It fits.
The Murder of Crowz however was great, It was very small, but those 4 (YES 4) ain't crows make their presence known with how massive they are, they can walk fairways in any direction and ADORE the little baby crow in his nest, my baby! They have their own music, the small bit of scenic sets the mood, and the lighting is nice, a surprise standout for sure!

This will change going forward as the heat very much killed half the actors and the vibes of the houses but I hope it improves, Opening Night was a great way to start off but Yesterday Friday was probably one of the worst experiences at Horror Nights I had, at least Insidious and Harry Potter saved the night at the end.
Wait times were good, really good actually, minus Insidious who both nights waited about an hour, but I'm fine thugging out 1 hr after getting no more than 20 mins for the rest of the houses and Tram.
Great Year hope it get better, my condolences to the actors, this Heat Wave was brutal!

I notice the younger crowd seem to be more attracted to it while the older crowd seems to be very against it.

Terror Tram: Enter The Blumhouse 9/10

Overall thoughts: Very great year this year, love pretty much all the houses. The first 3 nights were so nice and the lines were always pretty decent. Surprisingly, I had my most successful night last night on a Saturday! Weather was cooler and there was even less people than Thursday/Friday. I was really shocked about that. I got really good runs too in the houses and they were all pretty much fully staffed. It was also interesting that they added smells in both AQP (pine smell in the forest section and slight poop smell in the barn section, reminded me of a way tamer smell from Exorcist believer last year) and TCM (the smell in TCM is absolutely awful, nearly puked. Way worse than the puke smells that were in Insidious!) yesterday and got rid of the puke smell in Insidious? Weird choice lol. Night 3 is most likely my last night for this year unfortunately. If I'm lucky I'll be able to come back one more time but l don't think I'll be as lucky this year, I went 7 nights last year. Also random thought but Terror Tram is fantastic this year! The first Terror tram for me that has great repeat value imo. So much fun!

SATURDAY - September 7th, 2024
(No express, no early entry, no alcohol)
PICS Taken: Roughly 160

Surprisingly, I ended up staying until close again. :scream: The waittimes were actually more tolerable than Friday night for the most part. The weather wasn't awful either, it was warm, but there was a breeze!

SKIPPED: AQP (once was enough), also TCM & Weeknd because waittimes were long for those two unfortunately when I was down there. Missed out on Chucky again lol (sigh)

Was able to do everything else twice, or more because of great timing (seriously, keep an eye on waittimes). I would've done Monstrous at least 2 more times if I didn't require food.

Speaking of....
20240908_112913.jpg
Luigi's - $20 for THIS (before any discount).
Pizza $10, Salad $4, Drink $5(?)
I miss the old days when this was a reasonably priced combo! However, the pizza was actually FRESH & I didn't regret eating it like in years past!

I had planned to hit Terror Tram earlier while it had a hint of daylight, but ended up hitting it around the same time as Friday night (835ish).
20240908_125306.jpg
Still great. Noticed the last Megan "stage" on the left was empty of their killer doll. Purge is definitely the strongest section. Also.... Log Bunny has moved, I didn't see him last night :sob:

PURGE: Slaughterworld was great, but I've noticed they don't actually let in to be seated until 12:30ish due to cast change/mic testing. So the 1230 showtime is really around 1245am (which isn't too terrible). Still not sure if the cast does photo-ops afterwards since I'm always rushing off to do my last house run-throughs.

SCAREZONES are still good for the most part, the scareactors are trying. However the entrance SZ (both sectionz) still leaves something to be desired. The lack of set decor (1 prop, 2 display dioramas & a fire tower don't cut it) & a new lighting package is underwhelming.
Luchadors needs string lights & something else hanging above to really elevate the area. Still fun though.
Crowz could benefit from a better lighting package, it's sad when the stilt escort has to follow them around with a flashlight so the scareactor can see the ground better. Did notice these "wall" projections though
20240908_021434.jpg
20240908_122522.jpg

Monstrous is probably my favorite by default, but Dead Exposure is also up there (even if the primate section is lame). If Universal Monsters was fully staffed, it'd definitely make a difference. Insidious is by far the scariest. I always get asked if scareactors can get scared, the answer is YES!! I did so much swearing going through Insidious last night & hit the wall twice :lmao::sob::skull: I made the comment that those bathrooms next to the house are unnecessary, nobody will need it after they go through.

20240908_124133.jpg
First trip through- I was like "nopenopenope" during the first few rooms, but otherwise no big deal. However, I went through 2 more times & had the ENTIRE HOUSE TO MYSELF! :skull: Being in there alone with every boohole staffed- RIP ME.
(also noticed the faint vomit scent during my 3rd time)

Overall it was a pretty great night compared to the first two nights. With these tolerable crowds, it feels like the old days of HHN.

Heard more negativity on staff preview and opening night, but it sounds like they’re starting to find their footing this year. Everything I’m hearing sounds genuinely amazing outside of UM.
