I do wonder if the fan service of the event is starting to hurt the events production though, especially in the scare factor, most notably in the scare zones. At Islands of Fear I had a true dred of walking around the park not knowing what was lurking in the shadows, fog, and bubbles. Every year that seems to fade. Now there are selfie zones not scare zones.

While I definitely see where you are coming from with regards to the zones and I also sometimes wish we could go back to the days of truly creepy atmosphere, I also don't always think the shift is a bad thing if the actors are still allowed to have meaningful interactions with guests.

My most memorable moment in the streets last year was in Die-In, the most notorious selfie zone in a while. My friend and I were sitting on our bench people watching the modern set when the two girls from The Strangers stopped by. They stood there for a good couple minutes staring us down, to the point where is was creepily awkward (what am I supposed to do in a situation like that!). Before they left, one of the performers mimed stabbing me with her knife. That whole encounter was more memorable than any jump scare I've had in years because it was unique, and creepy in a different way.

That being said, I also realize that as I get older and get scared less easily, the things that I look for to enjoy the event have evolved. I accept that it's really hard to get me back into the mindset I had the first time attended Howl-o-Scream as a middle school kid, where everything (and I mean everything) was terrifying. While enjoy a good startle, I go to the event to be entertained, whether it's in the form of a scare, a laugh, or just being impressed by good set design.

I'm sure. I should try and check it out, but I think stranger things had plenty to work with.

Its not even about it being SCARY or SCARES just have the actors show up, period. If you're building these massive sets and putting all this effort to drop the ball on the actual soul of the house (the scare actors) that's sad.

If I dont get an actual scare thats not the point. If the actor at least tries to go for me or we have some type of interaction, they get points.

Does this happen often? Can u give me some examples,

One thing i ABSOLUTELY HATE
Is going through a house during cast change.

Thats That's when the house is truly empty .

I know it might not be possible but i have always wished that they would stop the line until every single actor was in place.

It sucks to be in line for an hour and a half, feet hurting, tired and thirsty, u finally... finally reach the house... and is completely empty... if theres one thing that i wish they could fix is how they get the actors to their positions.

Specially if u are going only once.
I go over and over to see what i missed

But i always feel sad for people going only once that get to the house in cast change

Yeah, the scareactors are the least important thing to me, unless it's something like Freddy vs. Jason. I definitely appreciate when there's a great costume and set-up and everything, but that's not why I go.

It isn't really scary unless they make you sign a waiver.

It is also pretty difficult to scare people over all with the crowds and conga line at universal. It breaks immersion pretty bad. The average person would probably have more scares at any onther major haloween event.

Like my other post. Scares = effort. I'm not sitting there thinking something seriously wrong is about to happen. Give the space some life. That's all. If there is the minority out there who enjoys a museum type event, coolio. :peace:

I remember for HHN24, the new Halloween cast would double up with the old cast and they would overlap for a minute or so and then the old cast would leave. I went through during one of those shift changes and probably had the most memorable scare of any HHN.

While I would LOVE Fringe, I'm just not sure there's enough awareness of it in the general public to justify it at the event.

Thats how it should always be.
That sounds awesome.
No one paying full price (and only going once) should be let into a house with empty rooms. Thats almost disrespectful of uni to have this problem.

In 25 years (i missed year 4) I have only been truly scared once. And that was in the American Werewolf in London house (first time). I heard the screams ahead and was expecting a person to jump out. I was NOT prepared for the full sized wold head puppet. I jumped, slammed against the way and shrieked. My friends, who have been going with me for decades, yelled "FINALLY!" LOL

AHS Chapter Two, Scream Queens (both seasons?), Ash vs Evil Dead. The others are very unlikely and/or could barely justify a maze's worth of content.

I don't really get the posts in reference to houses not being good if you are not scared. The word "scared" itself is so subjective. Anyone who is expecting to attend HHN and feel like they are in danger of their lives or something is actually going to happen to them in a house is out of line to begin with in my opinion. I respect that everyone's definition of "scared" is different but for me a combination of both a beautiful set design by the art team and enthusiastic scare actors inside who are trying to startle me is what makes a truly exceptional house. There will always be plenty of guests who are scared easily and perhaps claim they were terrified in a house but I think one of the great things about the event itself is that everyone has their own unique interaction with each house based on their sensitivities, interests, past experiences with the event, and so on. If you want to fear for your life go do one of the extreme haunt attractions somewhere else where you will be pushed to your breaking point. HHN is about so much more than that...
