I've seen a lot of discussion about fans' "concern" with the possibility of no icon at the event. I want to take my rumor-monger hat off and put my fan hat on.

I've attended six HHNs: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011. Five of those years had icons. My FAVORITE year, personally, was 2004. That year didn't have an icon.

Prior to attending, I obsessed over the event. This was before the internet when I all I had to go was Orlando Sentinel's Friday Calendar that was released the week before opening. They would do a huge eight page spread on the event every year. Most of those years didn't have icons.

Aside from Screamhouse (which I was cast in, so I'm biased), none of my top ten favorite houses are icon houses. None of my favorite streets are icon streets. Within the context of the experience, icons are completely unnecessary. They're fun. When used correctly they can extend fan interests beyond the few hours they're at the event. But unless an attendee is sore about the lack of an icon, they'll never even notice an icon isn't there once they walk through the gates.

The houses, like I said, sound really strong. The streets, I don't know enough details to really assume much. They just sound odd, more than anything.

And side note to anyone who has been doing this (not you, EllTee. Others...) - Marketing has been the predominant developer of "themes" and HHN campaigns since at least 2011. They decided/agreed to use Jack for the 25th. They decided to use Chance. A&D hasn't run that side of things for a while. Pitting those two departments against each other is just naive.

Thanks for the lengthy reply.

I get what you are saying. My first HHN was 1997 and it had no icon and despite being very young, it's what gave me the bug for HHN. On the other hand, I felt Lady Luck at 2011 added nothing for me. You hit the nail on the head though, with the icon extending fans interest beyond the event. I think that's what I enjoy about the original icons; back story etc. I loved what they done with Jack at HHN25. The cohesive marketing, show, merchandise all added to the buzz for me. I didn't go last year so can't comment if they pulled the same off with Chance - I'm guessing not going by comments..

However, I'm probably just confusing my nervousness about how good it will be with impatience for the full reveal!

I think this year will be amazing. But it seems the hardcore HHN fans are hard to please.

I thought Chance was a great icon personally. It was also my first year though, so I'm biased. Also lucked out that it was the last year of TWD and a best of house which I remember being pretty fun!

Chance is a great icon or could be. The execution was lacking. Her house was...terrible.

Thought Chance was great at HHN25. Im guessing her overall reception was good that they used her for HHN26. I'm now going to have to try find a walkthrough of her house to see what it was like.

I guess it's a double-edged sword. Hardcore fans have a lot to compare against, some really strong years that have set high expectations which can't be executed every year which can set you up for disappointment. It's also completely subjective and they can't please everyone all of the time.

I think this point really nails it. The event doesn't really need an "Icon", but it does suffer if it doesn't have a cohesive theme.

If you look at 24 vs 25 or 26, the latter of the two really felt like events; where the former just felt like a collection of streets and houses.

That's why I'm not too concerned over the potential of not having an actual icon this year.

If the new site updates have shown us anything, it's that they definitely have an idea and a cohesive theme to throw at us.

They've obviously put thought into it, and that's what really matters

Just speaking for me personally, and my wife - last year was our FIRST hhn.....Chance did NOTHING for us. We walked by her scare zone with a "meh" type feeling, and were more excited about ghost town, the tomb of the ancients and AHS. In fact Chances house was the only one we skipped

We bought our tickets for this year already based on the atmosphere, the houses, the fun.....an icon is not very high on my list based on last years experience. The event itself is what gets me excited!

At 26 Chance sold lots of merch and that was what the powers that be wanted but at 25 she just about stole the show from Jack. Probably why she was icon the next year

If the icon is good and the theme is cohesive it makes a huge difference, but its a double edged blade. If the icon is thrown in as more of a "Hey remember this person" it starts to have a problem... more so if the icon has been used previously.

Chance of 26 suffered both of those problems
Her house felt thrown together and literally was "hey look its Chance" stuff "Hey remember me I'm Chance!" stuff "Bye now remember Chance was here"
Her scare zone was pretty well done but the character of Chance is so directly tied to the original actor it made it very difficult for the Chance's that filled her role to come off as authentic.

Other icons that suffered from being thrown into their houses and zones Lady Luck and Fear spring to mind.

Most the other icon's (Director, Usher, Caretaker) don't speak that much so its much easier for them to pull off, and they are all the memorable ones with the only outlying one being Jack who luckily has an understudy that is able to mimic him fairly well so it isn't as off putting.

Heck just think of how much of fit everybody has when we get a new Bill or Ted

So Hyde was the answer to Legacy's clues, maybe we are getting a Universal Monsters scarezone, or maybe you can take Hyde further and think of Hyde Park in London, and they are doing a Jack the Ripper zone?

Not to go off topic here, but what is the stigma with 3D mazes? They're not traditionally scary or anything but imo they are a nice and different kind of experience. Instead of shadows or corridors for Scareactors to hide in, all of the horror is in plain sight and it's up to you to navigate your way away from it all. HHN26 was my first time going and personally You Won't Stand a Chance 3D was one of my favorite mazes.

Not everyone doesn't like them I just think they've done some awful 3D ones in the past so it's tough to ignore those. While I personally didn't like Chance's 3D house last year and thought it wasn't good I have enjoyed some of the ones they've done in the past. Asylum in Wonderland was awesome and changed the way I thought about 3D houses going forward until I've actually experienced them. I know others feel similarly about The InBetween

I think it comes down to a lot of over-reliance on the same gimmicks. There's only so much you can do with day-glo paint.

That said, done right--The In-Between, Alice--they can be a lot of fun. But done wrong--Penn & Teller, Chance (sorry)--they're really bad. Not a lot of that middle ground where 75% of houses end up.

To third this Alice at 25 was very fun. Brought back my acid days in the 60's. Chance in 26? Well it had paint and was thankfully short

I think 3D as a concept always splits people anyway. Some love it, some don't. I enjoyed Asylum in Wonderland 3D but mainly because of the theme rather than the effect. The In-Between is another that divides opinion; for some it was their favourite house in 2011, others I've spoken with didn't rate it so much. It could be because of their limited scope to pull off the 3D effect within the houses. Rockingamer20 kindly gave me some insight into Lunatics Playground 3D and the aesthetic was very similar to what has been done before. It is maybe a case of different year, same neon for some.

I enjoy some variety in the event too. As much as I love the Gothics, and Ghost Towns I think the 3D houses bring a different element to the table that's fun too. That said - only when done right like SeventyOne said. I'll happily pass on Penn&Teller :)

Tonight's clarity clue:

No original houses from the past look to be returning as new houses.
