Scarey:
-I understand what they were doing for this house and I get the nods and Easter eggs, but it didn't work for me . I liked the characters and I liked the actors in here,
but the sets are a total mess and the house doesn't transition well from room to. room.

I am singling this out as to me SCarey and Icons both START with good transitions, and then just fall apart

For instance, in SCarey we start in the sewers (Spawning) before going into the caverns beneath the town (Hive). Much like a reverse version of Hive, we exit the caverns up into a dilapidated house (Wyandot Estate/Dead End) before exiting it to see the grand Skoolhouse/OrFanage facade. All of those work, until we then hit the back half and just walk through the non-transitioning greatest hits part of the house.

Icons follows a similar route in that we go into the lantern, see Fear, and step into the realm of Lady Luck. As we go to exit her casino, the slot machine shows us three video cameras setting up our transition into the Director's realm. After a couple of run ins with The Director, we see him filming the death of The Usher and step into the Palace Theater scenes.

From there we just sort find ourselves running into The Caretaker with no transition and the rest of the house just sort of happens.

I really wasn't expecting much 'story' to either house, but it is weird to see that they started with logical transitions at the front of both and then those just sort of dropped off by about the midway point.

I didn't want to make my review so long, but yeah from going from skoolhouse/ orphanage to meaty meats and bloodengutz is such a drastic turn. you are right, the first half of scarey is pretty good and pretty dark, not a lot of lighting, and not a lot of color. very creepy. then bloodengutz and meetz are very bright and colorful, and funny, I understand they wanted to put fan favorite moments in the house, but the change is abrupt.
and i love meaty meetz and bloodengutz too, but it feels like two different houses instead of one .

Last night was not that bad. I waited for Icons after S&S at Finnegans. After that I went back to the hotel as I was pretty. I went back and did 6 more houses for an overall of 7 houses. I repeated Icons.

Icons- While I love Icons for just seeing them, the house isn't really scary. Did this house 12 times.

Puppet Theater- This house is really good. I never get tired of it.

Wicked Growth- LOVE IT!!! My favorite of the year. They really take advantage of the STs room. Affects in this house are cool.

Brides- I did this house last year 7 times so it's nothing new to me. It's still okay but not my favorite at all.

Tooth Fairy- I also did this house last year but not as much as it wasn't my favorite even then. While it's cool and an awesome facade it's not for me.

I will say the vinyl bugged me way more than I thought it would. I also didn’t quite ever get the inconsistency — why is one side of a boo-hole covered, but the other not?

Anyway, still an amazing time. My list:

1) Wicked Growth
2) Puppet Theater
3) Case Files
4) Icons
5) Beetlejuice
6) Tooth Fairy
7) Hill House
8) Scarey
9) TCM
10) Brides

How in the world is Bride #10 on your list? That's potentially HOTY for me and I did it a ton last year.

HOUSE RANKINGS
--------------------------

10. Beetlejuice

This house was just alright, wasn’t scary at all (which was expected) but I just wish this would’ve had more scenes that take place inside of the house in the movie, the whole first half should’ve been in the house and leave the neitherworld stuff for the second half of the house. The dinner party scene is also bad and one of the biggest disappointments of this house. The sand worm scene was also really hit and miss and I think of all the times I’ve done this house I’ve only caught it once or twice.

9. Revenge Of The Tooth Fairy
This house was good, but the scares were a bit lacking, I feel this was one of the houses where the plexi impacted this house a lot and it would’ve probably been higher on my list without the plexi. The set design in this house was some of the greatest of this year though, and the kitchen scene was a personal favorite of mine, and kind of reminded me of Krampus a little bit. This house also had a great façade, and I really enjoyed that the story was easy to follow.

8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
This house was insanely detailed, with tons of gore, which was cool to see but overall, the house was lacking a bit. I felt this house was also one of the ones more greatly affected by plexi, because I’m sure it would be much scarier if some of the Leatherfaces could get anywhere close to you. There were some good scares in this house, and the ending room could be quite scary and chaotic if you get good timing on the scares.

7. Welcome to SCarey: Horror in the Heartland
Yeah, this house was pretty short but it was, during most of my runs, made up for by an extremely active cast. It was also great seeing Hive again and more Slaughter, I also liked that I could finally see a glimpse of Leave it to Cleaver, since HHN 26 was my first HHN and I missed that house and Meaty Meetz appearance in 25. I didn’t think the plexi was too bad in this house, but it was still noticeable in some sections, like The Spawning.

6. HHN Icons: Captured
I really liked this house, and this house is another one that probably would be higher on my list if not for the plexi. It was bad in some sections of this house, such as the Lady Luck scene and the first scene, but I felt the scare actors were pretty good at using the plexi to their advantage sometimes. It was also cool to see fear in the beginning, even though most of the time he would just stand there doing nothing. The throne was also cool, but I’m a little mad I never got to see Chance on it, I’m pretty sure I saw everyone else though except the Storyteller.

5. Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives
If you asked me at the beginning of the event where I placed this house in my top 10, it probably would’ve been closer to the end of the list, but the cast in this house has improved so much and really got into the groove of what to do to get the best scares. This house also had a great story and a lot of cool effects. The bungee scare was also cool to see, even if it was very rare to get it because I assume the reset time for it is long. I also enjoyed that this was another house with a story that was quite easy to follow, and I really hope we get more Universal Monster houses over the next couple of years.

4. Haunting of Hill House
Wow, this house was pretty insane, from the façade to the variety of effects inside the house, overall, it was just amazing and one of the better IP houses I’ve been through. I was also quite a fan of the show so seeing it come to life was also great to see. I also enjoyed the “original” take of it only taking place inside the house, as I felt it helped it flow better and make more sense than if we were just jumping around from the most significant scenes in the show.

3. Case Files Unearthed: Legendary Truth
This house was just amazing, and I feel the HHN team probably put there all into this house since it was technically the only one they had to design for this year. This is probably the best house I’ve been to in the Shrek building yet, and I loved the variety of scenes and the Slaughter Sinema feel it had to it. I don’t really know much about all the Legendary Truth stuff, but I still really enjoyed the house and I think I mostly got it. It was also very cool to see areas from the actual park recreated in this house, and it would be great to see more houses that have scenes that take place in the actual park.

2. Puppet Theatre: Captive Audience
This house had probably the best façade of this year and not only that but it also had some of the best set design of the event. My only complaint with this house was that it felt pretty short and the layout was a lot of straight hallways, compared to Wicked Growth which is also in a tent and with a very windy layout which probably made it feel longer. This house had some of the best scares this year though (the fake mirror and clothing room scene come to mind).

1. Wicked Growth

Not only is this my favorite house this year, but it is my favorite house of all time (I've only been going since 26). This house felt like Halloween, from the pumpkin entrance, to the cemetery, to actually being inside of a pumpkin type thing, and I was surprised by how much detail they could fit into a tent. This house was also insanely detailed and also had some of my favorite scares of the event (the fence scare was seriously awesome). Other highlights for me were the bridge scene and the Witch scene. I also felt like the cast was giving it there all every time I went thru this house which was also great to see. This house also gave us Lil' Boo so how could I put it anywhere but first.

SHOW RANKINGS
--------------------------
2. Marathon of Mayhem

Honestly, this was kind of a disappointment, especially compared to last years. Some of the scenes were cool but the audio quality felt off (felt really hard to distinguish what I was hearing at points) and the Texas Chainsaw scene was really bad. I do hope they continue to do this show though, because I feel like it still has potential and everytime I saw this show all the other people around me seemed to really enjoy it.

1. Halloween Nightmare Fuel
This show was honestly really great, the bed trick they did was insane and I think I understand how it works but it's still really cool to see. The fire was also cool and the music wasn't bad either and I still have no clue how they did the finale trick. I'm not sure if I enjoyed this as much as Altered States, but it might be on the same level. I hope this comes back next year and maybe it will be even better than this year.

SCAREZONE RANKINGS
----------------------------------

5. 30 Years 30 Fears

Don't really know what was going on here, I think I only ever saw 1-2 scare actors max on the ground in this zone, but I guess this is just another zone that gets really congested since it's small and right at the entrance. The horror nights sign was cool though and I hope that can remain for a couple years.

4. CRYPT TV
This zone was pretty terrible, I honestly think they just need to move this scare zone away from San Francisco all together because the past couple of years this area has just become a giant road block of people. It is just way too small of an area and gets too congested. I also haven't really seen any CRYPT TV content so I didn't really have any relation to what I was looking at. The costumes were cool though, but it doesn't really matter when all the actors in this zone are just standing in place because it's too crowded to actually do any scaring.

3. Gorewood Forest
This zone had great theming, but I felt that it fell a little flat too. The costumes were super bulky which seemed to make it harder to scare and I don't really know how much I like the whole boo hole in scare zones thing, I don't think I ever got a scare from one of them.

2. Seek and Destroy
I don't understand why they have chainsaws.

1. Lights Camera Hacktion
This zone was honestly pretty great, and I feel that it is underrated. Good variety in costumes and tons of actors on the street. Also had a lot of theming around and getting too see Eddie was pretty cool.

Final thoughts after a second night:

1. Case Files (-): Yep, still HOTY. The house felt more energetic the second time around, and the story started to click better for me. Also helps that the scares remained just as effective as the first time around. 9/10 (-)
2. Wicked Growth (+1):
Getting two more runs in helped me appreciate the house a lot more. I was hit by almost every scare in my second and third runs combined. 8.5/10 (+0.5)
3. The Haunting of Hill House (+1):
My thoughts are unchanged. The house remains heavily timing dependent, but a second run allowed me to get hit by a few scares that I hadn't gotten before. 8/10 (-)
4. Puppet Theatre (+1):
I was able to go through the house with no one in front of me, yet it somehow felt weaker than my first run with less scares. The house was still beautiful to walk through, but Wicked Growth accomplishes everything this does much better right next door. 7.5/10 (-0.5)
5. The Bride of Frankenstein LIVES (-2):
I had a disappointing run tonight. Although most of the scares came my way, I think the scares in the first half of the house lack a good punch, undoubtedly because of plexi. The ending works with the overall plot but feels small scale compared to most other houses this year. 7.5/10 (-1)
6. Welcome to SCarey (-):
Both my runs tonight reinforced my initial thoughts: some great scenes but way too short. Also, the non-plexi vampire in Hive was missing tonight when I went through, which was a bummer. 7.5/10 (-)
7. HHN Icons: Captured (-):
Now that my expectations were in check, I enjoyed this house a bit more as a celebration of HHN's history. It remains a scareless affair, and I still had Jack on the throne. 7/10 (-)
8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (-):
I didn't go through this again, so thoughts are unchanged. 7/10 (-)
9. Beetlejuice (New):
Does the house work? Barely. The transition from a sea of hallways to more open rooms is jarring, and most sets feel low-rent compared to the intricacy found in the film. However, the house has a certain charm to it and feels respectful to its source material, which is a lot more that can be said about some other IP houses in recent years. Not great, but not a disaster. 7/10
10. Tooth Fairy (-1):
I appreciated the sets more this time around, but the scares just don't work. 6/10 (-1)

Marathon of Mayhem: Carnage Factory:
While it isn't as good as the first iteration, the segments focused on the Icons and Monsters are effective. It's a decent timekiller. 7.5/10

Overall, this was a decent year that I wish wasn't hampered by plexi. I don't think any cast was slacking in my runs, and it's clear that they were trying to make the best of limiting circumstances. I'm sure everything will be back to normal next year.

Probably will do one final loop of my favorites tomorrow, but after a collective two weeks of visits, my final thoughts:

The overall good? It hasn’t been an issue in a while, but I still like to point out all the houses but Scarey were a satisfying length. All were extremely well detailed; that is what sets HHN apart from everyone else, and even the worst houses made for interesting backstage tours. Most featured a decent mix of characters, which had become my biggest HHN pet peeve. In-house ops were by and large very good this year, rarely too intrusive. (House entrance ops could get obnoxious but they are easier to ignore.) Rotunda Security and the ticket scanners all went 88 mph and managed to get the overwhelming crowds into the park quickly and smoothly.

The bad?
  • Been discussed to death but vinyl (and to a lesser extent masks) hurt every house to some extent—a few they straight up ruined.
  • Staffing was an even bigger problem. Many houses had empty boo holes most nights. F&B lines were also insanely long, and old favorite Twisted Taters suffered from being clearly rushed. Even in-park security felt lax—bad behavior seemed to ramp up this year. Also, I hear through the grapevine a lot of backstage TMs never returned after the layoffs, and a lot of institutional knowledge was lost.
  • Express was clearly oversold—the switchbacks were insane. Toward the end of the event, crowds were insane. When a 3-hour Boo Bash can command $170 and a Mickey’s Xmas party gets $250, a price hike seems overdue.
  • HHN scare-zones are broken. Bad locations, bad set-ups. I’m tempted to say the concept is over in the cell phone era, but then Sea World goes and hits them out of the park. They can still work, but HHN needs a complete re-think on how to do them.
FINAL RANKING OF HOUSES & SHOWS

10) (S)Carey—three of my favorite comedy houses represented, but nothing here was funny. Three of the most atmospheric houses of all time here, but the mix & match layout of rooms kills any suspense/foreboding. Nothing but random ‘memberberries here, but not even the best scenes from the houses featured. And, yeah, the original Scudders were cheesy sci fi—but redesigning them into something new and unrecognizable destroys what little sense of nostalgia those costumes might have had. Gives Chance’s house a serious run for worst of the decade.

9) Icons—other than the Caretaker room, an objectively bad house. Too many scares from behind, and too many characters have nothing to do (Fear and Chance the worst example of this). Way too many mannequin victims and empty hallways. Just recreations of old commercials, no attempt to tell a story. The characters never interact, let alone “fight,” yet I’m supposed to care one sits on the throne at the end? How? Why? And without that explanation, seeing a 70s director or a knitting grandma sitting on The Iron Throne just feels silly. I get this house appeals to a certain “gatekeeper” mentality among some fans but I’d much rather see an original house that this year’s first-timers would look back on in 2038 and say. “yeah, that was epic.” Bottom 10 of the decade for me.

9a) Marathon of Mayhem II: Jack’s Boogaloo--This show lives and dies on the music. Needed more iconic, driving tunes to work, like the Beetlejuice score or Charlie Watts’ drumming on the original “Paint It Black” (rather than the Ambien-like cover version they used). 90% of the icons footage felt recycled from commercials. FWIW I felt the TCM segment was the highlight. But should only do when the IPs justify, or use better music and make it a more generic Universal Monsters show.

8) Beetlejuice—wanted to like it. But understaffed, way too many empty hallways, and largely miscast. Barker sounded nothing like BJ, Lydia was as tall as I am. (The dead-on accurate Ortho being the exception here.) Sets were faithful recreations of the movie, and effects were good--when they worked, which was far from always. But choices like the dinner party room being completely unstaffed are head-scratchers, and ultimately there weren’t enough scares for a haunted house. Vinyl hurt this more than any other house, that may have subconsciously pushed it down from mediocre to bad.

7) TCM—still not a fan of the IP, but probably the best of the 3 houses HHN has done. Cool opening gas station set, some novel scares (the chainsaws on the windows, the pigs). If I was a movie fan, probably could’ve contended for my #4 or #5 spot.

6) Tooth Fairy—same as my review last year, clever concept but an awesome façade followed by an average house with repetitive monsters. Vinyl did this one no favors, either.

5) Case Files Unearthed—let me be clear, the Kit-Kat Club scene was dynamite, tied with the witch in Wicked Growth as my favorite room this year. I quite liked Boris’ office and the museum scene as well. But the house never gelled for me. The bookend NJ scenes felt unnecessary, added nothing. “Slaughter Sinema but make it 40s pulp novels” would have been enough. Also the creatures were too disparate—and I’ll be blunt, derivative of past houses—to feel like a Satanic army. Demonic cat-girls feel like the Devil’s legions. Moss Man and yetis and a doll in a scene lifted straight from Dollhouse of the Damned? Feel more like leftovers from costuming. Animation in the police station didn’t really work, either. I respect A&D trying something new and novel, I just wanted it to be more cohesive.

4) Haunting of Hill House—very atmospheric, would be creepy even without actors. Which probably helps hide the fact triggers felt a little slow to reset in this one. Successfully conveyed the gist of the story even tho I didn’t make it thru episode 2. An effective enough crowd-pleaser no one will remember in 5 years.

3) Puppet Theater—started a little slow, as this location tends to for whatever reason, but once the actors found their footing it was great. You can just sense the attention to historical detail in the sets. Tons of effective scares—drop screens may be cliché but they worked every time. Clever touches, like a skeleton doing the “Alas poor Yorrick” speech with a human head or the gnome puppet or the baby puppet. This truly felt like a house that only HHN could do.

2) Bride of Frankenstein Lives—everything I said last year stands. Successfully tells a 3-act story with an emotional payoff while delivering scares and Easter eggs galore. Oh, and probably the best casts this year. An all-time great, only wish I’d gotten a chance to see it without vinyl/masks.

2a) Nightmare Fuel—the best HHN show ever not named “Bill & Ted’s”--and it beat out several of those. They cracked the code, mixing fast-paced illusions and aerial/fire acts with a dance troupe makes a much richer show. Music was perfect. Enough nods to Halloween to feel organic to the event.

1) Wicked Growth—Jack-o-lanterns made for an amazing opening. Sets were varied but all top-notch. Two solid casts. Innovative scares—e.g. the “rubber” fences—and nicely repurposed effects—e.g. the drop screen, the covered bridge. Twists and turns and fast resets so that most everyone gets some scares. A simple story, but a storyline nonetheless, that builds to a satisfying climax. Even the smells are perfect. A large mix of creatures, all vaguely tied into the idea of Halloween traditions. Also did the best job of making the vinyl unnoticeable. Another all-time great, should be used as a primer on how to make a Halloween-themed haunted house.

FINAL RANKING OF ZONES

5) Seek & Destroy—not entirely clear what was going on. Friends couldn’t tell if aliens or robots or stormtroopers. Why would aliens have chainsaws? And the fan interaction with the Master Controller grew annoying. Another NYC misfire. Should’ve shelled out the $$ to do Hunger Games, which this subconciously (?) borrowed from heavily.

4) Gorewood—no bikers, no Body Collectors, Eelmouth just a mannequin, no sacrifice show. Knuckle-grunts were good when the zone wasn’t jammed, but a disappointment based on what should have been.

3) Crypt TV—impressive costumes/make-up, but needed more off-stage actors to do proper scares. Biggest issue: SF too crowded for a zone. Move this to F&F courtyard and just make it a photo op area.

2) 30 Years, 30 Fears—nice mix of characters at least, felt suitably “Halloweeny.” Cool photo ops, which has become this zone’s raison d'être, but also a handful of scares. About as good as we can probably hope for here.

1) Lights, Camera, Hacktion—perfect mix of well-known and obscure nostalgia characters who actually went out of their way to scare. An overarching theme that justifies the randomneess. Stage performers there to distract, but enough on the ground to follow up. Strongest cast. The cast change-ups were a thing of beauty. Easily zone of the year.

It gives me hope the general public reacted so well to an original house and an original show—maybe this will inspire the event to drop the crutch of nostalgia. In the end, HHN 30 will go down for me as one of many average years with three or so great houses and a killer show. Which is enough after the past year and a half we’ve all had.

Brief final thoughts, may edit later:

Looking at how the best received houses this year and last (event) are the traditional Halloween fare is why I believe they may be better off bringing back houses like HoS and KSF.

Nightmare Fuel was amazing. Question is (SIAP), is there anywhere they can have it next year? Might be a one and done. But what a one it was.

I'm just going to be honest, though, I was extremely disappointed in this year. I've already discussed my misgivings, but I think this will be my last HHN for a little while. I had fun hanging out with people but ultimately I can do that in normal park hours without shelling out an additional $224, and if the houses and zones (except Bride) are subpar, I just have no reason. Gonna try to branch out next year.

This still feels like a false equivalency. Counter point: if they keep bringing back houses then they won't develop the ones we love this year.

Understandable. I just think they're best being able to put all their focus in one-two new ones, and I've gotten to where it's harder to be attached to houses knowing they'll be gone after just two months.

The only thing I can say positively is Halloween Nightmare Fuel was an amazing show. It was very action packed, a lot of fun, felt kinda like a concert atmosphere and the TM’s at the theater did a great job with hyping the crowd up before the show. Hopefully they’ll bring it back (or another version of it) next year.

I don't believe the "bringing back" thing works for HHN

HHN is way too polished and programmed for it

HOS and KSF houses improve over their length of stay (some at least)

I feel HHN (see: American Wareworlf) return houses would lose momentum the more they return

Not saying HHN's way of doing things is wrong, but I just don't think this is a route they need to go

So you're saying you agree with me?

Popular demand will give them quite a headache trying to find a spot for it next year.

universal is running out of movies to adapt which is talked about before. are they going to bring Michael myers back?
technically uni shouldn't be repeating anything but this is the third time we get leatherface. and look at how something like Crypt tv (while new) is a complete failure

It worked for Bride imo, but it's not something I actively want to see them do going forward.

a lot of people would skip hhn if it was repeated stuff, I know people that avoided American werewolf in London because it was repeated back In the day.

but I wish they brought back older stuff too. I wish I saw alien vs predator again lol (but disney owns that now)
is tricky. but people expect hhn to always be new stuff
