They bungled it all up and i just don't think people give a poop about the OG Buzz movie. They like the characters as seen in Toy Story.

“Look at this character you like! He’s now completely different, and nothing that happens has anything to do with the stories you love.”

I think audiences are a little smarter than we give them credit for and recognized this as a craven ploy, even if the movie itself was a perfectly good sci-fi caper.

The hastily-released, confusing art depicting Andy with nu-Buzz / watching the movie with his toys (???) was the canary in the coal mine. Disney realized it was going to open soft and smashed the “Toy Story nostalgia” button.

This is one of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" type things but people know toy Buzz, not human Buzz. This really isn't far off of making a version of the Lion King where Simba is a human.

It doesn't look like a kids' movie, it doesn't look like an adults' movie, it just kind of exists.

It's a weird premise from the start tbh

Yes and the voice re-casting is odd, it doesn't feel right and feels like a tribute film

Yeah, that box office is not the most promising news for the film. Some people felt that the $70-85mil projection beforehand was purposely low so it would look impressive if it went over that, so the film coming well under is an eye-opener.

I feel it's most likely due to a combination of things. They went a little too cheeky/high concept, and it wasn't a good sign when the very last ad spots finally stated this is "Andy's favorite movie". I also think audiences probably caught on that this just felt like a cash grab, and this didn't really have a good hook.

Finally, I think audiences have been getting conditioned that any new Pixar film is just going on Disney+. So that strategy could've very well bitten them.

People liked the Buzz show

Hell, im not against a film about Buzz but this film was more about breaking down his character that Andy at age...like 8-10 would not have loved

Its got cool ideas in it but Zurg and the side characters are lacking besides Socks which was the MVP of the film

This movie should have basically been a feature-length version of the opening sequence of TOY STORY 2, not a total re-imagining of the character.

Disney conditioning families to get their animated features on Disney+ probably didn't help, either.

I never felt like there was any buzz (no pun intended) for the film, I feel like there was probably audience confusion, and add on that people have gotten used to seeing Pixar movies debut on Disney+ and it’s just a bad storm.

I personally never had any interest in this film. As I said though, would’ve been much more interested if it was a live action film as that’s what it feels like it should be.

I meant portraying non-human things as humans.

Nobody cares about source material.

I'm more interested in the version of this film that's a fantastical version of The Right Stuff than the version of the film where he's fighting Zurg. The science and military comradery angle seems more intriguing than a battle against evil robots.

I still stand by this.

I think something that people haven’t mentioned is inflation potentially playing a part here, as well. Families don’t have as much disposable income and just aren’t going to go.

For families that are going to go, many may only go to one film all summer and adults aren’t go aren’t going to choose to pay that money for a film they may not enjoy. They’ll want to go see Top Gun, Jurassic World, Thor 4, etc - something that both the kids and adults can enjoy.

AMC needs an add on kid pass to A list then

I agree, that could be apart of it. You can get months off enjoyment off a video game or years if it’s Fortnite
Then Disney plus which is less then ten bucks a month

if theaters want kids back more then they need to let you get a pass for them

But also didn’t bad guys snd Sonic over Perform? I doubt minions 2 will not make over 100 million but maybe I wrong

Minions 2 will be a big test as to whether or not external factors like inflation are to blame for this performance. Personally, I just lean towards no one really caring for this version of Buzz Lightyear, but we'll just have to see in a few weeks.

YES! We all want it, and they just won't give it to us

A D+ Lightyear show would be spectacular as well, enough time for people to connect with the idea

The concept here already *felt* dated and tired...it felt like one of those 1.5 movies Disney does occasionally that land in a $3.99 DVD bin at your local CVS

Except they already had an awesome Buzz Lightyear show that came out in the late 90’s/early 00’s: Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. The only true Buzz Lightyear standalone movie and show.

All they have to do is put it up on D+

I think Buzz Lightyear of Star Command makes a ton of sense to be added to D+ once Lightyear hits the service after 45 days or whatever. Hopefully, at least.
