Predicting long term sales is foolish right now, I'd say outpace WiiU sales and 3rd party support, they'll get positive buzz and momentum and move forward. The Wii was such a fluke I don't even think THEY know why it did well (spoiler: it was well marketed and packed in with Wii Sports in Japan and USA).

Actually Wii Sports was packed in everywhere except Japan.

The marketing for Switch so far is amazing so who really knows.

I dont think the switch will really take off until it has a Mario game, and before that (it's several months, no?) it might have a price cut.

It'll obviously have a strong launch and then could do well enough the rest of the year with games building up until the holidays. Zelda and Mario Kart 8 could be system sellers to the millions that never bought a Wii U due to how poor the messaging was and only owned a 3DS or even other people.

I'm thinking strong launch and then doing fine enough until the holidays roll around for another strong period. As long as the marketing quality remains consistently great.

I would classify MK8Deluxe as an official Mario title, as it'd be wise to not underestimate that version of the IP.

Miyamoto: Games made with PC as a base can be ported to Switch in about a year - Nintendo Everything
Yasuda was in attendance at Nintendo’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, and relayed a comment from Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto said that games developed with PC as a base can be ported to Switch in about a year. The report also adds that the console was revealed to third-parties last summer. It’s thought that we could therefore see major multiplatform titles starting from the fall season.

I guess now we know why Skyrim: Special Edition isn't coming until the fall. It also means to look towards E3 for any possible further big third party announcement.

Is a year a good timeframe for a port anyway?

In fact, I actually bought the Mario Kart 8 limited edition Wii U bundle and I'll still pick it up for the Switch, just for the portability factor (and because it is without a doubt my favourite). On the other hand Zelda I've never played fully in my life (other than one of the originals years ago) yet I will probably see what all the fuss is about come March just because its the "big game" for the Switch. I anticipate I'm not the only one with this mindset either :p

I can see this working out for Nintendo with the marketing probably being their best yet - so for this reason I would hope (and expect) it's going to easily outsell the Wii U and likely Xbox One, especially if the rumours of the dock being modular are true.

Yeah I agree, I've always found it hard to get into Zelda. I loved such games as Ocarina of Time and a Link Between the Worlds, but the series can be really hit or miss. I'm personally more of a Mario guy myself. :p

I really hope this "consideration" doesn't amount to anything. It's likely just a backup plan even though I think Switch would turn out fine if they just put Pokémon on it.

Nintendo said they wanted to not repeat the same software droughts the Wii U had. Well, as last gen proved, they can't seem to support 2 systems at once effectively anymore. One will have to give. If this comes to pass the Switch will definitely not hit that 100 million that Mr. Kimishima thinks it can. The portability will be useless compared to a 3DS successor and they'll essentially be competing with themselves. There's really no point since Switch has all the features a handheld would need. Sometimes they can be so thick headed and stubborn

If they go with a 4DS if they switch fails, it won't do well either. Dedicated cheap handhelds don't really have a big market anymore. The 3DS did not see DS sales, and if it had a successor, it would not meet 3DS sales. Nintendo does well in the handheld market, but underpowered "kiddy toys" are not the way to go!

Switch mini would be the way to go. A smaller portable focused model that plays all the same games minus the home console connections and detachable Joy-Cons. Also better battery. This way they keep development focused on one console while still having a more portable option.

If Nintendo keeps the marketing going and put full development behind the Switch, it'll take a miracle for it to flat out fail. Every unit will be sold at a profit after all.

Switch mini is the perfect way to go. That way they are only technically supporting one console with a constant supply of new games.

That's a picture of Prime steak. Some people think it's Metroid Prime, but I think it could be reaching. We can hope though.

Now he's sharing his thoughts.
"You might be familiar with the fact that for a previous game that I did, we had a specification that we called 'Transferring' where you could take the saved data from the PS Vita and move it over to the PS3 and back and forth like that,” Kojima told IGN. “I believe [Switch] is an extension of that idea. The fact you can play something at home and take it outside, this is the gamer's dream. The Switch is an evolution of that."

"For example, often when you buy a Blu-Ray disc, it'll have a code on the inside for a digital version, so in the same respect you can watch it at home and then take it on the go on your tablet and smartphone,” he continued. “This is how movies and TV are moving, and this is how games should go."

Kojima added that he sees Switch as the beginning of a future where people will be able to play any game on any device.

"I feel like cloud technology is what everything will eventually move to,” he said. “It's further behind right now than I think where people thought it would be at this point, but I think it will go there, and when the infrastructure is ready, you'll be able to play everything, on every device, anywhere. The Switch is the predecessor to this step."
