If it isn't, they sure got a helluva lot of free publicity

It would surprise me tremendously if they didn't milk this for a "retirement season" event. Stranger things have happened, but this would be rather silly.

Should it actually end up closing, I would have to imagine it was the victim of circumstance. I remember when Disneyland suddenly, abruptly, and without warning closed down Space Mountain--one of their top, major attractions--and it remained closed for years.

They had the money to rebuild it. But another company would likely would let it be gone forever.

The ride will be twenty years old next year-- the last number I heard about the cost to just keep it running is ~$5 million a year. So the ride has cost them about $100 million above and beyond whatever the initial pricetag was (~$30-$50 million?).

The ride is and always has been a black hole that they threw money into.

It's no issue to close a ride for maintenance/budgetary (when reasonable) reasons.

However, if Six Flags had known about a potential permanent closure for month or two, they should have made a formal announcement. Heck, it would have driven additional attendance by coaster fans (like myself) to visit one last time.

The rumor I heard is corporate wanted to close El Toro and park management pushed back and settled on Ka instead.

Apparently demolition permits were issued for Green Lantern, Twister, and Parachuter’s Perch today, so three rides all in a cluster are all being removed in the off season.

Supposedly there’s also “official” word that there will be an announcement about Kingda Ka coming soon, so now the speculation is it will be SBNO and undergoing modification for 2026.

So they're closing four attractions in one fell swoop without any previous announcement? Oh brother, these guys stink.

Two updates. Zumanjaro is also coming down (they forgot to mention it in the press release). Kingda Ka is getting fully removed, no Top Thrill 2 scenario here.

What a joke. I'm not mad that it's closing really, just that it wasn't announced ahead of time. I would have flown out to experience it if I knew it was closing this year.

Yup, exactly. I don't mind a closure, but give the fans a chance to visit.

I never, and will never, get a chance too. I would have booked a trip immediately had they given us advanced notice.

Absolutely. Terrible decision-making from Cedar Fair that does not give me a lot of confidence in their leadership.

I’m more bummed about losing Zumanjaro than Kingda aka, honestly. One of the few rides on earth that still scares the crap out of me.

I’m genuinely so shocked at this! I know there was buildup to the rumors for weeks and while it felt real I felt like the park WAS going to give enthusiasts a chance to ride it one last time…. This park even gave Great American Scream Machine a proper send off! Such a slap to the face.

I will not be accepting any gloating from the accounts who insisted this was the end for the ride. A closure of this magnitude without a formal announcement beforehand from a park and chain of this caliber is unprecedented, and people were right to be extremely skeptical -- especially when their guest service teams were denying an imminent permanent closure.

Yeah, guests service teams denying the closure did not age well.

These advertisements also do not age well now that the closure is official:

More than not aging well - this is arguably false advertising if the decision had been made to close Kingda Ka prior to its publication.

All I can think of is perhaps some circumstance arose relatively abruptly that made them realize it was better to close it now (again, we all should remember when Space Mountain at Disneyland closed without any warning for years), and they didn't have the opportunity to market/announce it in a timely manner.

And while it sucks Parachutes and Sky Ride are being removed, they had been closed for a season already. And honestly, Green Lantern is not that much of a loss. It was really unremarkable.
