I disagree. What was way, way less common then is way more common now. There is a reason they don't do these nowadays. Remember: it's 2016. 2005 was 11 years ago. The majority of tourists now have such a heavy swell of communication opportunities to make things even more widespread than before.

It's not that people couldn't back then, it's that MOST couldn't. That's the difference.

Well I've been going to soft openings since around 2000. I haven't noticed any real difference. The crowd outside Soarin when they were soft opening and I went was pretty much the same as when Diagon Alley was soft opening and I went. I do see crowds in general are a little bigger now but I'm just not seeing what your talking about.

I do agree people are more informed and more importantly informed up to the minute. Most people for example who went to the Soarin soft open read the rumors online before heading out for the day. I think the potential for the first day to be more crowded than before is certainly there. Of course I always try to go to soft opens 2-3 days in.

All that being said I don't think that any of this has anything to do with Kong. When they decide to do a soft open they'll do it. It's not like they're afraid the crowds are going to be too big. They typically limit by time not quantity of people. First day they may open for just an hour and then build from there.

Well let's keep in mind that the Kong rumor was about people being secreetly pulled in, rather than opening the backdoor and soft opening due to the entrance being not ready yet/blocked like Soarin was. (which I admittedly forgot about until just now)

When it comes to those "secret" softs, WDI and ops want to keep those on the down-low. In contrast, a "formal" soft opening is already designed to pull people on the attraction. The entrance is built to do that. So obviously people in a theme park will gravitate towards that.

I think Disney has changed the way they can do softs and had to altogether drop the more secretive "play test" softs due to the burgeoning rise of communication. Think about the throngs of crowds waiting outside Diagon everyday. This is due to social media, people wanting to be first on the scene and showcase that as soon as possible. It's just another thing lost due to the rise of communication, just like how Mr. Toad and Light Magic changed Disney's perception on how they can't control the message as easily. Nowadays it's blown up so huge that literally anybody can access this information, not just super fans. Just a comment on change, that's all.

They were picking random guests to come in during the testing of toy story mania. I was there one day it was happening and my friends and I waited for a bit outside of the work walls to see if we could get in. Sadly we saw family near us get pulled in backstage and we just gave up lol. I seriously doubt this could happen today with social media now, things would be leaked easily

I just heard a story about a group of the Manager level TMs riding the other night as part of the Excellence in Leadership awards. Apparently there were all kinds of delays in getting the ride up and running for the group and once they were cycling through the ride stopped and they had to evac them which took a while. Sounds like there are still a few bugs to work out, especially with the evac procedures. I'm sure Universal won't want every evac to make the news because all the guests on each vehicle call 911 because the procedure is taking so long (which they will).

^ Same old same old. Sounds like communications issues still plague this attractions. It has to be the sets and screens interrupting the wireless. Then there's the RFID tags.... yeeesh.

When Nemo previewed at Epcot the line went back to Innoventions. People got in it not having a clue what it was for. Which is odd, because people don't get in such lines on a normal day. Heck, they fight out "omg, it's 10mins and no FP?!?"

So I just got a tweet from Universal Orlando that the park would be opening 1hr early next week. Would that be just for the holiday or optimistically to try some softs for ROK? Wishful thinking...

Thanks for posting that. Universal had said that annual pass members were going to get in an hour early all this month. This is just letting us know which park we can use this coming week.
