Honestly, the "general public" consensus I hear about Universal is that "It's good, just not as good as Disney." Usually the praise I hear most is in their thrill rides and Harry Potter, and the most common criticism is lack of classic attractions and "too many simulators". However, the teen demographic in general I notice is pretty strong with Universal, especially around HHN.

Agreed, people think it is good and like HP. But not as good as Disney, lack of classic rides, and way too many movie screens is what I hear a lot. The last person I talked to was upset about putting on glasses too much and I can do that at a movie theater. But the younger crowd would love it, because of the thrills.

I think the original argument was that people would eventually "stop going" to Disney due to the lack on new attractions, and my point was that many, many, people go because of the old attractions alone, and that's not something that is willing to stop anytime soon.

Universal doesn't hold the same nostalgia, and never will, especially when they re-invent their park on a regular basis, and a lot of their rides are based on current technology.

In 20 years, Transformer/Spiderman/etc will show their age, while Pirates and Haunted Mansion will still be timeless.

The fact that Spiderman already had to go through a digital upgrade is telling. the problem with basing your rides on Screens and CGI effects, is that eventually that CGI looks dated as technology continues to improve.

This is a problem in the film industry as well. The CGI in The Phantom Menace is completely distracting now..if Jar Jar wasn't enough.

Yeah, that's because the original JP did it right by using a mixture of real AA and CG. The "blue screen" films of the late 90s have aged poorly.

Since we are talking theme parks. The first Harry Potter movie has terrible special effects

it seems cgi is only realistic when used on objects but when used for people its still pretty bad take fury road for instance there was alot of cgi in it

Basically I made a post trying to remind people this is Disney and not to get your hopes up that nothing SW related will open before 2020, and I'm hoping I'm wrong, and I was nearly lynched. A poster I've seen there before but had no idea he was an insider named 1023 is saying it will be open in 18.

Wow, this is very surprising yet will be very satisfying if true. A fully-fleshed out land built in a reasonable time. DHS needs this stuff bad at this point, so to have TS Land AND SW Land by the end of 2018 would be a big turnaround for the park.

Hopefully it happens that way.

From what it sounds like WDW will have a boom soon....I'm looking forward most to the new MK expansion

Yeah, I'm guessing your timeline is close for the reasons you spoke of. Plus, they haven't even developed the attractions yet, at least that's what the insiders are saying. I'm thinking 2020 for the opening with a small possibility of mid to late 2019. They may have the greatest of intentions to come in sooner, BUT Disney is Disney. Nothing gets finished close to projection dates. Heck, they're still working on the MK Hub, and that's just a landscape/sidewalk redo for all intents and purposes.

I am not writing off 2018, nor am I saying it will be 2018. At one point Universal sucked, nothing new, slow, etc. They turned it around and have done faster and better things. What is to say Disney can't do the same under the right leadership? That is all it is, leadership. When leadership sucks it takes FOREVER for things to be done. When leadership is good, it makes a world of difference. Which is what Universal now has, good leadership.

Well, technically, Avatar CONSTRUCTION didn't start until 2014 for a 2017 opening. If they start construction in 2016 and it takes 3 years again, that would be 2019...

To back this up even further, there has been reports that the timeline has been accelerated due to ops complaints because the park will have little to do for so long.

I think a land should not take more than 2 year to build IF! the company has an interest to get it done. When it comes to Disney is not about speed, it's all about the quantity of money they prefer to spend for that fisical year on that especific project. So it's all about the type of approach the companies take. UOR focus is growth and be able to compete with the big guy and stand as the best resort in the area, perhaps pride... IDK. Disney is about making the most money with little investment as possible or minium risk. This is why they prefer to just invest a bit here and there and not jump head first like UOR lately when it come to money and getting things done right away.

Disney goes slow because they know they can. It may not please us as fans, but they can get away with it because crowds will continue to increase no matter what - especially because Universal is going so hard core right now. Anything that draws crowds to Orlando will help Disney, even if it's something built by Universal. The only thing I can say that may go against that is HHN.
