'Touch-to-Pay' RFID devices to roll out to many locations tomorrow

Disney is about to roll out the new 'Touch to Pay' system to a wide variety of locations from tomorrow.

The system was first tested back in August at the Contemporary (read about that here), and is now being rolled out to the following locations starting from tomorrow, 11 December 2012. The new system allows guests to use their RFID 'Key to the World' card to just touch the Mickey head on the reader to make their payment. Purchases over $50 require a PIN number to be entered, which is set at check-in. Guests can also use the system to pay by credit card, but in this case it is swiped through the magnetic reader.

11 December 2012 'Touch-to-pay' locations:
Epcot
Disney's Art of Animation Resort
Disney's BoardWalk Resort
Disney's Contemporary Resort
Disney's Polynesian Resort
Disney's Yacht & Beach Resort

It is expected that the touch-to-pay system will be fully rolled out to all Walt Disney World registers by early 2013.

New NextGen RFID main entrance turnstiles to go live this week

Remember the Epcot RFID main entrance turnstile test that took place last November? The trial didn't last for long, but was obviously a big success, as Disney is now about to deploy the system to all four parks beginning this week.

Work has been ongoing for the last few months on the right-side of each of the park's main entrances in preparation. The deployment will be a phased approach, with more turnstiles being converted to the new system over the next few months. All guest tickets will be converted to the RFID versions, allowing all guests to use the system.

The RFID reader allows guests to just touch their ticket to the RFID Mickey head reader and walk through. Along with being quicker, it is far more convenient for guests with strollers and wheelchairs, and those in larger groups.

IllumiNations Reflections of Earth testing FASTPASS+ viewing locations

Epcot's nighttime spectacular IllumiNations Reflections of Earth is about to start a round of testing for inclusion into FASTPASS+.

Two locations are going to be trialled, one near Germany and the other in World Showcase Plaza.

FASTPASS+ will ultimately allow guests to not only choose attraction FASTPASS times, but will also provide preferred viewing locations for shows, parades, and fireworks.

New official Walt Disney World website roll out begins including 'My Disney Experience'

Disney has invested heavily in the NextGen project that is introducing a whole host of new trip planning technologies across the entire Walt Disney World Resort. The latest product from the project is a brand new version of the official DisneyWorld.com website.

Completely re-written, the site no longer uses Flash so is very iPad friendly, and is much more focused on providing information and creating itineraries. As you would expect, the new website also features a dedicated 'My Disney Experience' section, that will allow visitors to manage all of their FASTPASS+ ride reservations, dining, accommodations and PhotoPass.

The site is being rolled out gradually, so is not available to all users. It appears to be random, so keep trying if you want to see the new site before its full launch. We also have some screen shots of the new site below.

Touch to Enter and Touch to Pay

The RF-equipped cards will be used for much more than just FastPass+, also allowing guests to enter theme parks without passing through slow-moving turnstiles. Testing of this technology began at Epcot back in November 2011 and is currently being installed at all Walt Disney World theme parks.

ieIVzbkv0PH0M.jpg

Guests staying at Walt Disney World hotels will also be able to use RF-equipped entry into their rooms, with a quick tap of the card offering access inside. Online check-in will be linked to the system as well.

Likewise, guests may store credit card information with the new RF system, allowing quick touch-to-pay access at merchandise and dining locations throughout Walt Disney World theme parks, hotels, and restaurants. A PIN is required for purchases over $50, otherwise a simple tap of the card against a glowing Mickey Mouse head will complete the transaction.

io0la8UF8HxDK.jpg

The same enhanced RF cards will be used at a variety of Disney attractions in the future, currently including the new Test Track, which allows the saving of car designs created in its queue onto these same cards.

Looking ahead, Disney will be uniting all these experiences under a single system, though the RF-equipped device won’t be limited to a plastic card. Wristbands will also be made available to offer more convenient use of the new technologies and opportunities.

Speaking as a former CM in Main Street this is going to make a Custodial CM's job so much easier pushing the three liner carts and the big recycle carts through the turnstyle areas every day/night.

Should also help some of the traffic flow one would think when the people exit in the masses.

I watched the new entries at three of the four parks over the last few days, and from what I observed, the time it takes to get through these is exactly the same or a second or two longer than the "old" turnstile system when it works correctly (i.e. just one ticket scan, no finger problems). Of course, just like with the "old" turnstiles, how often will they actually work 100% correctly, including the person remembering which finger they used and the scanner correctly "reading" the finger scan? While this will likely eliminate the issue of the tickets physically having issues, the other issues still exist and happen just as often as on the old turnstiles. The net result I observed: 0, pretty much no effective difference between the two.

I used one of the new RF credit card machines at Sunshine Seasons the other day and it was my first time using it so I go to put in my card and the cast member goes "Other way." And then I guess I was going to put it wrong it again and they said "OTHER WAY." And then they finally just grabbed my card out of my hand and swiped it. lol Yeah, that was magical. Thanks Disney.

FASTPASS+ What we know so far (and what we don't)
FASTPASS+ (FP+) has concluded its third test of 2012 at Walt Disney World. This system will go wide soon at WDW, so let's review what we know and what we don't.

What we know:

FP+ will allow for reservations ahead of time (weeks/months) before a vacation
If it follows the tests, FP+ will only let users choose four reservations per day (and only in one park)
If it follows the tests, FP+ will only let you choose ONE E-ticket, one or two D/C ticket rides, and then an A/B ticket ride (or a show/parade reservation?).You can't get all four roller-coasters as your four reservations, for instance.
Once it's fully enabled, FP+ will replace regular FP, and there will be no "day of" FP options
The exception to #4 above is that in-park kiosks will let you replace / remake reservations for the same day if you miss your reservation. Since this is essentially very late in the game, you shouldn't count on "big" rides being available. If you miss your Space Mtn. reservation, you are likely to have to choose something like PeopleMover or Philharmagic to replace it. Everything else will likely be "sold out" that day.

What we don't know:

It's unclear if annual passholders get to make reservations too. Early rumors point to 20 reservations per quarter (or 80 per year), but exactly HOW that will be divided hasn't been revealed yet, if the number is true at all.
No one knows if the TOTAL number of reservations in the park per day are going up, going down, or staying the same. Let's pretend that in 2010, the Magic Kingdom issued 200,000 paper ticket FASTPASSES per summer day, spread across the ten or so attractions that used regular FP (most of them E-tickets). In 2013, will the reservations system issue 300,000 reservations, now that smaller rides are included in the list of possible reservations? Or will it still be 200,000 - but not spread out among MORE attractions? If the latter, that will mean shorter standby wait times at the "big" attractions.
We don't know WHEN in 2013 the system will fully take over and replace regular FP.

Discussion

Spontaneity. There is little arguing that a major downside of the new system will be a loss of spontaneity. You have to plan the four reservations you get MONTHS in advance, so now the rides will be a bit like restaurants - your day is being planned out long before you arrive. This is far from relaxing, and changed the tenor of a "vacation" in general. A few folks may feel the opposite is true; that locking up reservations represents a relief, and they can now relax confident that they have what they need.

Optimism. I've been cautiously optimistic about FP+ since February of 2012, when I speculated that it's possible that the new system might be BETTER than the current system, especially if they result in shorter, faster-moving standby lines at the "big" rides like Space Mountain.

I still think that if they tweak the system *just right* they can end up with a reality where people who want to make 1-2 really important reservations can do so, but otherwise, the day is spent waiting in lines. The inequality of the 2009-FP-World won't exist, where clueless tourists skipped the FP system (thinking erroneously that it was just optional and their wait would be the same either way) while locals and experienced users realized shorter wait times as a result. The revised system is unlikely to let first timers make such a mistake, and the net result is more fairness distributed, which can only be good.

However he forgot to mention that the new system will allow for shorter waits for those involved and will keep people out of lines and in the park spending..right where Disney wants them..I still think this NextGen thing is a dirty trick..A way for Disney to up charge their base experience and create the illusion that you are getting more..such is capitalism I guess

I got it lets spend 1.5 Billion dollars tricking people into getting more rather than spending it on building more! It's genius

I'm very skeptical about this whole project. IMO stand bye waits will increase 10-25% and TDO has no problem with that.

If we're really limited to 4 rides a day I'm gonna be POed. Let's hope they don't go ahead with 4 a day.

Not only just 4 a day, but only one of the 4 can be an E-Ticket. Which, as of now, are the only attractions you need a FP for anyway. I am laughing my ass off about the fact that they are adding FP+ to the Flying Carpets. Who is chomping at the bit to reserve their Flying Carpets ride time 6 months out?

This is exactly why I'm skeptical. How the hell am I supposed to choose between BTMR and Space Mountain?

Probably anyone at DISBoards or WDWMagic would reserve that far in advance for a 90 second carpet ride

Is it really any different than having to buy express passes at Universal, besides the whole reservation time thing? At one time Universal had kiosks around the park and gave them out for free but then decided to charge for them years back. So really all that is happening is Disney looking to do something similar.

Well now that they have Q-Bot it's pretty much a non-free version of FP+

Not even close really, the Qbot time is not made months in advance and can be used on every ride for that day.
The one at Dollywood was unlimited and worth every penny.

Due to having to make plans months in advance could lead to a huge line outside guest services. Going by a situation where this has happened in the past (on the cruise ship Oasis of the Seas) where you need to book in advance for shows and other events, it leaves a large amount of people rather annoyed that they either never knew about it or didn't take much notice about it (people are stupid). Also the fact you need to book smaller rides and only one E-ticket is horrible. Why did Disney even bother spending their money on this when they could of built 15 E-ticket attractions with that money.

They could build an entire theme park with $1.5B. That said, I am hearing that NextGen is now approaching $2B.
