It is very possible that Alan Gilmore made such a specific request/demand, yes.

Would it not just be cheaper to use a wood beam than a steel one and then having to theme it?

I have a feeling we're going to see more than just beams made of wood for the hut.

It may have something to do with the type of vendor they hired for that part of the project (and how wood is installed against wood).

I could be wrong, but I believe, they've already started planting!

I must apologize for not realizing the scale of the wood framing. Now I am completely stymied why they went with real wood. Short of some of us geeks, few will notice it if the building is full of robots moving about.

I chalk the extravagance up to it being Potter and “what’s a few hundred thousand extra here and there”.

Maybe the time spent in the building is longer than we think. But in the end after many rides one will look up in a glance and be delighted as noticing a real wooden structures....or something is up there calling our attention.

There is tons of real timber framing throughout the Wizarding World. The 3 Broomsticks, Hogsmeade Station and The Leaky Cauldron all have copious amounts of timber.

I'm pretty sure the wood used for those structures were purely decorative though. The actual structures were still framed in steel. The only reason I can think of for them to use real wood here is cost. It's cheaper to use wood, than to use steel and theme it as wood. They're definitely sacrificing the strength of the structure though. I think we'll be entering and leaving the hut pretty slowly to protect the structural integrity.

Also @Alicia they seem to have placed three electrical transformers smack dab in the middle of the oval that was supposed to house Fluffy. Not to say he won't be there, but it's gonna be a tight fit given regulations and such. Is this still the location you've heard?

Have you seen the amount of steel Universal is using in this thing and the enormous size of the wooden beams? I have a hard time thinking Universal does this to save a few bucks, that doesn't make sense. Beyond that wooden structures are very solid and fare much better with vibrations than concrete and metal.

Also, here's an explanation of various regulations with regard to transformers:
Adjacent to buildings, transformers must generally be located in accordance with the following requirements. First, a transformer must be installed with the front (doors) facing away from the building, with no balconies or overhangs above. The transformer must be accessible to line trucks (size and weight similar to a cement truck), for maintenance or replacement. Generally, a transformer located near a building requires 4ft clearance from the building vertical surfaces, assuming no windows from grade to 18ft. The sides of the transformer must be clear of all objects (including landscaping) for 3ft, and the transformer should be located 10ft horizontally from doors, windows or fire hydrants. The front (door side) of the transformer shall have a clearance of 10ft so that line crews can safely perform maintenance or repairs on the equipment. This required clearance includes landscaping. When encountering landscaping during emergency repairs, the utility can remove the landscaping (not very gently) or leave and await notification the offending vegetation has been removed. During routine maintenance, the utility will not attempt to work on the transformer until the landscaping has been removed.

Thus the hole in the concrete under the track. I believe the transformers are for Fluffy. Maybe one for each head, haha.

Actually, the hole under the tracks is likely for line trucks to perform repairs to the transformers.

There is 30-40 feet between those transformers and the track. More than enough room for an Giant 3 headed dog.

Rockwork and all though? I don't think so. They also have to make sure that a service truck (regulation required dimensions are the size of a cement truck), can easily access the transformers.
