Orlando can take it or leave it. This is one I definitely will not see in theaters.

Toronto International Film Festival known as the Oscar preview festival as most films screened here end up Oscar contenders picked Sing for their festival with it premiering there. Which means it must be better than people are expecting.

SING initial reviews will start pouring in tomorrow around 520 PM. Currently Universal has the 3 extremely highly acclaimed films from TIFF so I'm sure SING will be another one.

SING premiere was today. And it was a very good day for Universal. Lots of positive press and comments despite the lackluster trailers. The festival this premiered at also is very elitist when it comes to films so for such positive press it is more so rewarding for Universal and most likely will lead to a ride

In truth, the idea itself is absurdly simple. Animated animals, led by a failing impresario koala voiced by McConaughey, decide to save a failing theater by putting on a show. It’s a plot as old as Ruby Keeler. But it delivers with an energy, intricacy, and nonstop attention to detail that can only have come from the kind of creative executive who falls in love with a project, and would rather ride it all the way to its release on Dec. 21 than trust it to the fates while turning to a new challenge like DreamWorks.

Sitting in the balcony at the Princess of Wales theater, it all began to make sense. By the end of the film, viewers in the audience—grown-ups and children alike—were applauding the furry, computer-animated performers as if they were real. They had forgotten they were watching a movie about a show. It really was a show, a good one—and Meledandri was right not to let go.

To me, Sing may just be the "Don't judge a book by it's cover" of this year for when it comes to animated films when it comes to the reviews..but I think I need to wait a little bit more till more reviews start coming out..

Not just the Hollywood Reporter or Variety, but more from the other screenings (test screenings and other reviews outside of those two..).

This is the harshest one so far but even then its nice because despite the critic wanting to hate he was applauding at the end.

Sing review – pitch-perfect porcupines have the X factor in jukebox musical | Film | The Guardian

and then from Meledandri and Ron Meyer themselves...

The move, an unusual one for a big holiday major studio ‘toon, made a statement here at the Toronto International Film Festival that this film would not only be a major hit and priority for Universal and Illumination, but that it would also be an awards player in the unusually heavy Animated Feature competition this year. Showing up with a splashy event at TIFF is one way to do it, and with voiceover stars Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Scarlett Johansson on hand, along with a post mini-concert of a few of the film’s 65 songs by co-stars Jennifer Hudson and Tori Kelly, the fans went wild, both outside where the biggest crowd I have seen here in a long time strained to get photos, and inside where the crowd with tickets was equally enthusiastic.

When I asked Meledandri if he was surprised by the reception he definitely answered in the affirmative. “I wassurprised because in the 30 years I have been in the business I have never seen anything like it, not with Ice Age, not with Despicable Me, not with Minions,” he said. It is rare that every song gets applause from the audience, but this film did that. Universal’s Ron Meyer was among those showing support at the after-party and he told me he was certainly thrilled with the reaction as well. And why not? Illumination has become Universal’s most reliable cash cow, with one hit after another, most recently this summer’s smash The Secret Life Of Pets. And I think Sing could equal it and put the studio in the Oscar race in the ani feature category.

Using Enimem's Sing for the moment in a Kid's movie trailer...interesting though they could have just gone with Aerosmith's Dream on.

Saw the recent trailer in front of Fantastic Beasts, and not surprisingly I still have no intrest in this film whatsoever. Especially since that trailer gave away pretty much the whole film, emotional conflicts and all. (An' why am I not surprised it's also chock full of all the singing/talent show tropes?)

An' speaking of Sing and AMC, it's easy to tell what theater chain they're really pushing it in.

...now if only Illumination could put as much effort into their films as they do their advertising, maybe then they'd make more then just profitable popcorn flicks. (Even Blue Sky can churn out a nice gem like the Peanuts Movie.)

I don't know why I'm cheering against this particular film so much, but I am.

Maybe it proves me totally wrong, but these are the things that really grinds my gears:

-a bunch of anthropomorphic animals for the sake of appealing to kids
-slapping in a ton of unnecessary voice 'talent' for the sake of having names attached
-a slew of aging pop songs and pop culture references
-a concept that seems to have missed the memo that singing reality shows are on the decline (but I guess Comcast = The Voice, not American Idol)
-really mediocre animation, maybe coming together a bit but it seemed noticeably lower quality than SLoP
-an over the top aggressive marketing campaign that started in February
-I've already watched the film seemingly thanks to said marketing campaign.

It's the type of movie that is taking animation back ten years. In a year where we have seen so much better quality stuff across the board from many different studios, potentially including this one.

That said, it's going to make stupid money at the box office. I really wonder how much was spent on the marketing campaign though.

Seen it and it's a lot deeper and than you think with number of characters etc. it's merchandise gold because everyone will have a different fave out of all of the contestants.
