Honestly, IMO, the parks should open later if they want to only have the parks open for 9 hours. Open at 11 instead of 9. Nighttime is better in parks than day time anyway

The attendance they see during the off-season doesnt justify longer hours. Its the law of diminishing returns. X amount of people have to spend enough money to offset the cost of having longer operating hours. But the park only hosts y amount of guests. Universal knows what theyre doing. You also have to factor in the amount of employees available in the off-season, which again, have shifts that offset the costs of what guests spend in the off-season. Longer/more shifts means spending more money which Universal figures will not get re-couped.

Also, CityWalk is a huge moneymaker...getting drunk in a club is much more feasible than doing so in a theme park. Not only does Universal know this but people seem to enjoy that concept--last winter the park got noticeably more empty when it got dark, because people wanted to party, see movies, etc. and were tired of the parks.

Until Universal begins seeing significant attendance increases (which it very well may when DA opens), the park hours will remain short(er). And even after Diagon, theres no promise off-season will be busier enough to justify longer hours.

Not sure if I agree with this

Maybe not huge...but its open until 2 am regardles. Its more profitable to force people into Citywalk rather than giving them the option of being in the parks.

There are several reasons why this wont happen.
-good luck finding minimum-wage frontline TMs who are willing to work til 10 (at least) in the middle of the week during the fall.
-opening at 11 invites people to eat breakfast, and possibly lunch, outside of the park--terrible for Universal
-lights are expensive.
-during the day its hot. When its hot people rode water rides and buy towels and new shirts. When they dont ride water rides, the buy water bottles and fans. They also spend more time in air-conditioned shops, and buy things.

If this argument is valid, then how does Disney manage? Or for that matter, How does the (insert your favorite I-Drive fastfood joint here) down the street stay open past 6 on Tuesdays in October?

Is Universal's pay structure really the lowest in town?

My only complaint with 6 PM on a business side is you are missing out on people eating dinner in the park. I think if you close at 8 PM you have a way better chance of people eating dinner in the parks. Because of their current lower room count, people who are driving to the parks have no reason to stay after the park closes at 6 PM, so they can leave Uni property and go eat somewhere else that is cheaper. I know we hardly ever stay for city walk because we are not into clubs and we feel we could get a better value by leaving Uni and eating dinner elsewhere. But if we are in the parks until 8 PM, we will tend to stop for some kind of dinner food around 5 or 6 PM.

Magic Kingdom is the only theme park that operates with late hours in the of-season and their employees are comp'd 75 cents extra per hour. As far as fast food joints, they dont really hire from the same pool of people as the theme parks do.

I've heard it is--maybe that's just food service, because now that I think about it, that's the only place I've heard of that. But the food employees definitely get a 75 cent bump in their wages.

I think Epcot is always open until at least 9pm.

The only other thing I can think of is that Disney employees are part of a union, so, again, it's a different group of workers who are given more benefits. Living in the Dr Phillips area myself, its inevitable to know people who work for the parks and I can definitely say that Universal caters to a different type of employee.

Regardless of the type of employee Universal caters to, do you think that Universal would have trouble staffing the parks if the Universal Parks stayed open until 9pm in the Fall?

I mean, what I think obviously doesn't matter. From what I've seen (no facts to back this up) Universal has a higher turnover and more part-time employees. Do high school kids and retirees wanna work late in the middle of the week? I don't think so. And Universal has a good system going with the hours they have now.

From what I understand, Disney is a muchhh better place to work if you're looking to move up in the company and make a career out of it. I would consider Disney a better full-time job, more willing to work late, because of their union and because they give their employees (apparently) so many opportunities to move up in the company. However, that's just my view of it. Universal is still sort of a neighborhood theme park, in terms of who it hires for its frontline TMs from what I have seen. I'm willing to bet most TMs who are active on this site work there part-time rather than full-time, whereas the opposite could be said about Disney.

That's what they want you to think. Universal, at least when I was working down there, pays better.

My best friend here in town is the head of special events food and beverage at the Contemporary Resort. She has worked there for over 8 years and is making just at $8/hr. From what I understand, these days it is almost impossible to make the jump from front line CM to a corporate level position. For these positions they almost always hire externally, and usually someone with an MBA.

Well that sucks...one of my friends had a story completely opposite to that. I guess it all just depends on the location and management team from location to location.
