Am I the only person who doesn't care whether it's screen based or AA's and physical sets as long as its good? It honestly shouldn't matter at all what they use to create the ride as long as the ride itself is great. Use real monkeys for all I care. Genetically breed the world's largest Ape. Just give me a good ride with a good story that everyone can ride and can be considered an E-ticket that everyone raves about when they get off of.

That's a six flags mentality imo. You need to diversify. Just "give me something good" isn't good enough for me. They need to be more creative in the design process.

Do you think Pirates and IASW are "relatively the same"? Also, have you been on Gringotts?

Transformers is similar to Spider-man because it was a Spider-man stand in for Hollywood and Singapore and was never meant to come here. By all accounts Gringotts is vastly different and possibly better than the other two. I think "Every screen attraction is the same" is about as ludicrous as saying every AA attraction is the same.

Not all screen attractions are the same; not every AA ride is the same. BUT, there is a difference between a ballroom set full of Pepper's Ghosts, a burning town, and a crumbling temple; theres not quite as much different between a screen showing Optimus Prime and a screen showing the British countryside

Your comparisons would be slightly more valid if the screens were just screens, but Universal have added in a lot of other elements to complement the action on the screens which isn't present in your burning town or ballroom examples. Environmental effects such as changing the temperature of the air, fireballs, water effects and wind effects are all used to place you more directly into the environment to make up for the fact it is on a screen. You feel like you are there. That makes it much more than just watching something like a film, as the popular comparison tends to go.

The first time I went on Transformers, the wind at the top of the skyscraper scene was so realistic and unexpected it genuinely amazed me and brought a huge grin to my face (you could almost say it blew me away  )

And really, why is the Pepper's Ghost so amazing? It only serves the same purpose as a screen, it just achieves its aims in a different way. You could design a pretty similar scene without using Pepper's Ghosts.

I think the debate could never really be settled. If anything Disney probably relies too much on AAs and Universal relies too much on screen based rides. But in the end they are both fun parks to visit. Which is better is nothing but opinion. Obviously we are on a very pro universal board here, but I think everyone can agree that both ride types serve a purpose and entertain in a different way

I guess the question is which type of ride gets old and makes you tired of it faster.

I really like this analogy and that's basically what we are all arguing about. I don't think it's the type of ride but the ride itself. AAs don't make an attraction case and point Stitchs great escape, same with screens case and point wild arctic. It's all in the ride and I don't think either AAs or screens make a ride better or worse just the quality of the ride itself

Read back a few pages. While there's certainly the element of it being hard to indulge in the illusion when your brain knows the scene is so obviously just a 3D screen (what with the glasses on your head and flat surface), the two mediums of show scene design require completely different approaches. Some of us prefer one or the other for a majority of attractions. Some of these 3D experiences are AMAZING and completely justify their existence - Spider-Man, Transformers, (looks to be) Gringotts - but that's enough. There's only so much that can be done before it gets excessive.

The same thing can be said about AAs and sets. It is hard to indulge in the illusion when everything is clearly a fake set with what is clearly just a robot that barely moves and has a voice coming from a speaker. I'm not saying that's how I necessarily feel about AAs, but some of the same things you hear being said about screens can be said about AAs too. They are not some sort of wonder in illusion.

Were there any renderings of this ride released yet or no?

It hasn't even been officially announced by Universal, so no. Hopefully they announce it around HHN and give us concept arts.

Who cares if it's clearly fake? I don't go in with the expectations of seeing the real Barack Obama when I see The Hall of Presidents, but the AA's still amaze me every time.

It's about the scope of it all. Something like Pirates, Mansion, Spaceship Earth, etc are all huge in scope and use AA's exceptionally well and keep you entertained throughout. Some rides do truly justify the 3D experience as they do things that otherwise can't be done. I'm not saying screens are bad. I'm saying that they need to mix in a few other attractions concepts if they want to be a well rounded resort.

3D looks fake too, just a different kind of fake. I do know that these rides which rely on screens also use practical effects to help sell the illusion, but the rides without screens have practical effects too. There is a certain magic of experiencing real things actually happening right in front of your own eyes which just can not be achieved with screens. Though I am not saying one is objectively better, they are just different experiences and I also believe they should try to keep a good balance.

Universal has all kinds of attractions planned and pitched. One non-screened attraction pitch I recently heard about was an indoor launched B&M flyer for MSHI.

We'll just say that there are few hurdles before this one happens.

I really hope they have good giant insect AA's. Those would scare the crap out of me. Imagine if the spiders in FJ were even bigger and actually MOVED!
