I don't have a problem with Jimmy. Not a huge fan of him, but I think he is a genuine guy.

Colbert, on the other hand, is a comedic genius, IMO.

Do you mean younger in the sense of the show? Because Colbert is 51 and Fallon is 40.

I think he meant younger than Letterman who Colbert replaced.

Colbert should do OK. Letterman had lost his edge and just seemed to be going through the motions for the past decade. Every show was almost exactly the same as the previous. In his early days he was cutting edge.

I prefer someone like George Carlin ... lol, might not be suitable for Universal though :) Plus, he is dead, would be hard to get him to do footage for the ride.

I rarely watch the Tonight Show but judging by the few shows I've seen, Jimmy is fine and I think every new host will go thru this criticism. Now I did watch the Colbert Report religiously and I will try the Late Show but I personally think Colbert made a very risky decision because he is a character and if the Late Show is asking for a generic behavior instead of the out of touch, condescending Republican that seems to be living somewhere, but planet Earth. Then I can see a different type of Colbert, Even though the Late Show is comedy with interviews, similar to Colbert Report, it still needs to stay generic unlike the heavily political Republican view comedy show.

Jimmy has good sketches but his interviews are crap. I'll take Conan or Colbert over him any day.

Colbert worked Second City and other acting roles, I'd hardly call his Colbert Report his only persona. Everything I've heard and seen about the new show sounds awesome.

Yep, and he can still do little bits where he impersonates bill o'reilly. And he pretty much turned into himself for the end interviews, which were some of the most erudite discussions on television. He will slay in interviews.

From all the advance promotion, Colbert's Late Show is still the witty, sharp and downright subversive comedy from his old show without the exact persona. Apparently he'll be taking a good deal of the broad strokes (caustic irony, a sense of cluelessness to amplify the joke and other's responses) of the character and is making that his Late Show "persona". So while it won't be a character, it won't be generic at all.

Well if we have to have a ride about Jimmy Fallon, I sure as hell hope The Roots, Steve Higgins and Justin Timberlake (given that he's one of Jimmy's premier guests and also both real life friends) are involved.

In a just universe, we would be talking about a Tonight Show attraction with Conan O'Brien right now.

I disagree. The Tonight Show has always been a "safe", middle of the road, not edgy type of show. That is why Jay beat out Dave. Quirky isn't it's schtick. And I like it that way. I'm glad that, in the end, Letterman never got The Tonight Show. That way Dave's quirky humor wasn't squelched by the NBC overlords. And he could play off of NOT being Jay Leno.

Yea. Conan is great, but I don't think he would have lasted at the Tonight Show either way. He's too offbeat for its audience.

Eh, for being on a network not many watch in TBS, he still does fairly well for himself.

His show is brilliant. But his show would not work for the traditional Tonight Show audience.

I agree for the most part. Same reason there was no chance in hell Craig Ferguson was ever going to take over Late Night after Letterman. Ferguson had a great show, but it would've never translated to the 11:30 audience. It was just too.... out there.

Yup. I wish Ferguson had been on earlier. Loved his show but rarely got to watch it.
