I don't know if hung up on trackless vehicles is quite it, more that happenstance led them to building a lot at once. It was the correct choice for what they wanted to do with RotR, but has severe limitations as a thrilling ride vehicle. It was the correct choice for MMRR until they nerfed some of the utility of having a trackless vehicle in the design phase. Ratatouille was a "we have money to spend" off the shelf pick, and OLC would pay whatever for the BatB ride. Then you clone MMRR and you've got six in a small window of time.

I can't go on RotR without thinking of the Simpsons between the final Kylo scene and the escape pods:

Good explanation and even better visual demonstration. Maybe RotR involved "look like you belong there" type of sneaking.

I definitely agree. The Scoop system is incredibly versatile and effective, and it feels more cutting edge and current than trackless many times. Is there a reason that Disney hasn't used the system in their parks? Is it patented by Universal?

Since Busch used the exact same rider system for Williamsburgs castle ride, I'd say no. its not a Universal patent.

I would love to see the Scoop implemented in an Indiana Jones Adventure/Dinosaur-type dark ride.

I guess the Jurassic World ride in Beijing is kind of closer to that style, but they could go even further.

Wow, this just spun me on a tangent watching videos of the Beijing JW ride. That's the Jurassic ride I've been wanting and expecting since I was a little kid. Looks awesome!

Well it seems the last post in this thread was made 2 years ago! I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but it's disappointing to see this ride in the state that it's in. Does anyone have any insight on if there is any chance that the attraction could receive a lengthy refurb and operate once again with all sequences running properly? Or if Disney even cares to take that step?

Sure, it still breaks down a lot, but M&MRR, using the trackless system too, breaks down often, also. We rode it twice in June. The only things nor working were the canons on the ride and the laser effect in the preshow. It's still the best total attraction (18 minutes of fantastic and fun adventures) in my opinion.

It’s working fine lol. The cannons are the only things that don’t work.

I really wish they could get those cannons working. That scene was a real, "Wow, this is impressive!" moment on my first ride-through shortly after the attraction opened (the only time I've experienced them working).

Heading to Disneyland tomorrow. Do the cannons still work there or are they broken at both?

The cannons at Disneyland were not working when I was there last September.

I thought they'd essentially been completely "turned off" (for lack of a better phrase) at both resorts for some time now, rather than putting up with the hassle of them constantly breaking down.

Yeah there was a phase where the probe droid was stationary, Kylo B mode was the usual, the AAs around the AT-ATs didn’t move, I had a ride where the lightsaber through the ceiling effect was stuck down…. but all of my rides in at least the last year have had all of those things working.

Other than the cannons, it’s mostly at 100%… I hate to make excuses but breaking the ride path is a lot easier on paper than in practice every 20 seconds or so. If I remember correctly, the Whomping Willow was also supposed to break the ride path before they chose to either reprogram it or redesign it to not.

I would never design something to do that. Never thought about that. Yeah the cannons probably will never run again lol

Yeah, they could have achieved basically the same effect by having them go back and forth without actually breaking the ride path and needing the RV to know whether the path is clear or not, but the hindsight of designing it to eliminate any chance of a collision is 20/20. You could probably argue the foresight is 20/20 too but it’s WDI lol

It’s kind of like the Yeti - we’ve heard over the years that there were plans and/or money to fix it (both true, at least at some point), but something that big moving above guests’ heads makes the lawyers and safety people nervous. If it was just built off to the side I think it’s very likely it would move at least in a limited fashion.

The Transport ship is second to only the actual ride itself, in my opinion, so I doubt that I'd use single rider. Plus, RotR lines aren't that bad anymore, once you get past the morning hours. Slinky usually has longer lines, and RotR is more often about the same as MMRR, Aerosmith, and Terror of Terror in the afternoon and evening.
