A video posted by a mainly Disney site read mostly by pixie dusters like you. That would be like saying the general public hates Frostrom based on a video posted by Orlando United.

There are other videos online posted by non-Disney channels and the comments are the same. People complaining about yet another lame outdated 3d sim ride at Universal. I'm not a Disney fanboy, I love both parks. My love for Universal is quickly ending though with one disappointment after the other.

Lol, one disappointment after another!! Hogsmeade and Diagon were such let downs. Hulk refurb will be terrible also I bet.

If people hate Universals 3D so much, why did their attendance increase last year? Kind of funny of YouTube comments mean zilch.

This tickles me considering it has less 3-D screens than any of the other rides at UO.

Basic Review of Kong:

-WAY too many 3D screens, way more than I assumed it was going to have. It's basically the majority of the experience. Very bummed out. It's more of a short drive thru movie than theme park attraction.
-The animatronic bats in an early scene look like they were ordered from Spirit Halloween. Cheap in other words.
-More attention was paid to the queue than the actual on-ride experience.
-Kongfrontation in 1990 gave us 2 full body Kong AA....over 25 years later we get ONE and it's just his top half with no body movement at all. Yay for progress.
-Prerecorded tour guides is a lame idea. Original Kong ride had live people spieling which is much more personal and keeps it fresh longer.
-Really shocked to see them just take and alter an old 3D scene from Hollywood. Lazy.
-Went to the trouble to remove the track so it's more immersive...yet they use 3D screens... AND you can easily see other park guests walk by in the outdoor section. Super immersive. :|
-No actual gift shop. all the current merch is very bland and uninteresting.

In the end I'm super disappointed. Could they possibly ditch the 3d screen areas in the future and finish building the ride?

Ummm wait what? You were posting not 2-3 hours ago talking about the YouTube video and clearly had not ride the attraction, and now your posting a "ride review" even though softs have not happened yet today so there is no way you could have rode it in the time between?

A few points..

* If you are going to complain about the use of Screens in Kong, are you going to complain about how much they are going to use for Frozen, Avatar and SWL?
* The Kongfrontation AA's were NOT full body. They we're from the Waist up.
*Having Live Spielers Isn't as easy as your wanting it to be.
*THEY'VE HAD THE 360 FILM USED IN THE MARKETING SINCE THE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
*While I will argue that there should've been a gift shop, would you rather want to see more put in for the ride, or more put in for the merchandise?
*If you want to complain about the bats, why did you ignore the Witch and the Carnictis?

Epcot brings an great point to where this attraction has less screens than some of the other attractions on property; and I think that's something else to consider.

I never use the Ignore feature on the forum, only on rare occasions.

My thoughts on the screens vs. AA in regards to this ride is Kong really got it right. If you think about it having an AA in the ride where the ride vehicles pass by in only a few short moments is kind of a waste and only allows for either a very short sequence for a complex AA or usually just a basic repetitive movement. This has been Disney's formula since the 60's it's not bad but AA's have really improved over the years and are capable of so much more. Using them in the queue and ride vehicle where they can be seen closer and for longer periods of time is far better use of them. Meanwhile there's no way these dynamic action sequences could be achieved with AA's.

I think Gringotts really started this shift and Kong benefited from this and they were able to take it even further.

As I refuse to watch the video before I ride it myself I'll focus on this one part.

You must really hate that in Space Mountain before entering the light tunnel. Or getting a view of the park from Splash Mountain. Or Thunder Mountain. Or Expedition Everest. Or Tower of Terror. Or the backstage areas from Test Track. Or seeing the guests eating from Gran Fiesta Tour. Or seeing the people in line for Indiana Jones from the Jungle Cruise in Disneyland, etc.

Next time, before you post, think about this question: "will this make me look like a pathetic little fanboy who doesn't know what he's talking about?"

But you have to think of the total sum result and the context... The 360 screen in Kong is essentially the same thing as World of Motion's speed tunnels, but in 3D. World of Motion had a few (I want to say at least 2, maybe 3?) and they were a smaller part of a much longer experience.

Mixing screens with sets/AAs is not new, but relying on them for the basis of a scene is pretty recent.

What "other videos"? As far as I can tell, there is only one real POV video so far. Anyways, someone who really "loves" Universal would not spend 18 posts complaining about a single ride which you haven't even been on yet.

The difference is that in 1990 Universal's parks weren't LOADED with simulator rides everywhere you look. One is a fun novelty, 5+ are a lazy nuisance.


The comments on that video speak for themselves. I'm very proud to see the general public finally waking up and saying NO to 3D screens on theme park rides.

Rex (I think that's what it is and i'm just guessing based on this since I don't want to spoil the ride for me) without screens? It's not as easy as you're probably thinking. You're acting as if Universal could have 2 AAs have a full on fight scene then reset in a minute to do it again without breaking down a lot. I don't remember Disney creating something this immersive using AAs so why do you bash Universal for doing it? Disney Fans...

Exactly... just because it reuses some Hollywood footage does not make it bad. Many people in Florida have not ridden the version in Hollywood.

You pretty much do need the screen for the fighting itself, though some could be done with AAs.

Imagine if you pulled into a room with dense - real - folliage, rocks, etc.. Those blended into screens behind them. The AA raptors pop up and the vehicle accelerates to leave the scene (the vehicle stays put, but the rocks and trees slide out of view and the screen simulates movement.)

The V-rex attacks, Kong counters, and the vehicle "falls" out of the scene as depicted as it is now.. But instead of being stationary, the vehicle twists and tilts as it advances into another scene (in a perfect world it would literally fall sideways and dip under the screen - since we're in imagination-land lets pretend it does that.)

We're now in the "pit" and there's an AA v-rex and an AA Kong grapling with each other, Kong kills it. Our vehicle drives out, past more rockwork and trees and such. A raptor AA pops up on one side as our driver is like "It looks like we made it!" A giant tree falls over squishing the raptor AA, revealing Kong (who pushed it over). Driver's like "Umm.. I'm going to slowly creep past and get us the heck out of here!" Kong is growling at us and such.. and we scurry along to safety.

That's a mix of AA and screens.. and would arguably be a better attraction.

There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

Simple - you build an attraction based on what can be done with animatronics and physical sets / effects. The 3d scene where Kong fights off dinos is pretty boring to be hoenst, not having it would not be a loss to the attraction. It looks like a video game cutscene that you can't play. Forget handing out 3d glasses, just give me a controller.

They could have Kong battle dinos with real animatronics though, you just change up the way you approach it. Physically seeing real AA fighting in a spot would make up for the inability for AA to jump around with a screen.

The question shouldn't be "How could you do THIS with AA" it should be "What better approach could they have taken to do this basic concept with AA".

It's just a boring fight between Kong and dinosaurs, it's not particularly staged / directed well - very basic stuff. Video games are very realistic these days if they want to be. The 3D screen portions of Kong don't look too far off from what VR gaming can offer these days.

The good news is, if enough people complain over the years / lose interest in this attraction they can remove the 3D screen scenes and replace them with what people want, which is real effects, sets and animatronics. I'm holding out an idiot's hope for that to happen one day.

I specifically typed out a very plausible version of the show that was a better mix of AAs and screens.

None of it was beyond our current tech or abilities.

Well looks like I'll be waiting for Star Tours and Soarin to pull that one off.
