Anyone with lots of experience of theme park design? This might be of interest:

Director, Creative Direction – Expat To Bedford, UK

This is what the Senior Recruiter for Universal Creative said about the role:

Absolutely exceptional opportunity alert!

Many of you have been asking for a very long time when we will be posting roles for the Universal UK Project. I am delighted to announce that the wait is over! Below is the very first listing. And it happens to be for one of our most important roles on the project. And even beyond that, it's likely one of the ultimate roles in the world right now for someone in themed entertainment creative direction.

So, we are seeking a Director, Creative Direction - Expat to Bedford, UK. The role will start in Orlando and will be here for several years, before moving to Bedford for the installation phase of the project. This person will oversee all creative direction on the project as outlined in this summary:

"The Director, Creative Direction provides leadership and oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of creative projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and vision. This role supports the artistic narrative and immersive experiences for all assigned projects, manages project-based team members, and fosters a diverse and inclusive culture. The Director mentors and coaches Creative Directors and Narrative Designers (Show Writers), encouraging a proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making, and implements effective management practices to optimize team performance and resource allocation. The Director leads cross-disciplinary efforts across design, engineering, architecture, art direction, and PMO to achieve cohesive and impactful creative outcomes. They champion innovative ideas and forward-thinking strategies, guiding teams through the creative process from ideation to final construction, ensuring that storytelling aligns with the creative vision and brand identity. Additionally, the Director establishes strong relationships with senior leadership, including Presidents and IP partners, facilitating seamless cross-divisional communication and collaboration to drive project success and enhance brand value."

In terms of experience, we are seeking someone with:
15+ years designing experience-based entertainment for world-class theme parks or related industries; must have 9+ years art direction or production design and field experience based on Universal Creative standards; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

I read a rumour on a rail forum the other day that apparently universal have struck a deal with the government to offer discounted train tickets which would make sense. Instead of offering discounted park tickets that hit their bottom line.

We’ll be waiting a while to find out if that’s true.

I’d love the Eurostar thing to the true, but domestically I think incorporating it into HS2 should be our main concern as that would open it up to far more people throughout the country.

They did explore plans to build a tunnel to connect HS1 and HS2 but ultimately decided against it for cost reasons. And the fact that HS2 to Euston almost nearly got cancelled (and only got saved because it has been heavily scaled back to a state that almost undoes any benefit of HS2 because they can't afford to build enough platforms, and also now that Euston is privately funded) implies that we will never ever see a HS1 HS2 link. It was ruled out back when people thought HS2 could be done and now the fact is we are only going to get a shell of a HS2.

Unless you meant connect Universal to HS2? (They could and should build an interchange station with East West rail as the two lines intersect - build a new town too while you're at it)

Yeah I was thinking a spur line going to Universal directly.

I’ve always wanted HS2 to go all the way up to Edinburgh/Glasgow then into Cardiff and down to the South West (Devon/Cornwall) but I’m living in a fantasy world.

But if that were to happen it’d make getting to the park ridiculously easy.

Reckon the Premier Inn down the road will take my booking now for May bank holiday 2031? I suspect I'd qualify for an early bird rate.

No, this map covers 550 acres of the potential 700 , and then other parts are public roads/ network rail land. these maps were indicators of the overal infrastructure and site plans, not universals land ownership

the only thing that is stopping Eurostar train is whether the train is physically able to fit the loading gauge to Bedford, threes plenty of tunnels from liverpool st station to outer London for example but this route might be different and the train operators themselves ofc

I have just done an updated layout for anyone interested

Those three expansion pads there could be opportunities for, say, Kung Fu Panda, Noddy, Shrek, Old London, etc. Any other suggestions?

I know it'd never happen, but I'd be very Britishly happy to see a Wallace and Gromit / Aardman space. Visit West Wallaby Street, ride Wallace's latest invention, the Coaster-Matic, meet an animatronic Gromit, ride some flat rides themed to iconic W&G moments like Gromit's sidecar, the planes from Curse of the Wererabbit, rockets like in a Grand Day Out, dine on Wensleydale at the Cheese Cafe... What's not to like?!

Since it's fun to speculate, I will throw in that...
  • 13 acre space - Already reserved for the opening day Lord of the Rings land.
  • 17.75 acre space - Dreamworks land (different from Orlando, with Wild Robot featuring prominently)
  • 19.5 acre space - Wicked

My guess would be they can mix Dark Universe and London together and have a Dark London area, the obvious candidate is to have a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde attraction, but London is featured in both their screen adaptations for Wolfman and Dracula, and the original Invisible Man book was set in England, so there are quite a few connections with their extended dark universe family.

Lord of the Rings will probably be one simply because too many people "insiders" have mentioned it at this point for it to be all smoke.

Then my wild-card third land is Roald Dahl, realistically I can't see them making a deal with Netflix (and potentially WB!) but it would be on my wish list, Islands of Adventure was originally all IPs based off literary works, so having Lord of the Rings already I don't think rules out further lands being based on successful British authors/books.

How to Train Your Dragon is a British series of books.

If we were sticking only with British Books…

Harry Potter
Lord of the Rings
How to Train Your Dragon
James Bond
Paddington Bear

And to rub salt on Disney’s wounds

Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, 101 Dalmatians, Alice in Wonderland, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, are all British books too…

Also the wildcard; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a book written by Ian Fleming and adapted to film with Roald Dahl…

Obviously I jest. But thinking about it, it really shows how much of Disney & Universal’s big IPs are actually British.

You could make a very cool park using IP from British literature.

I'm sure they don't have international appeal required for Universal, but add in all the Agatha Christie books and Jane Austen novels, not to mention Terry Pratchett, the Discworld would make for an awesome theme park land.

No one’s mentioned Narnia which is currently being rebooted by Netflix.

Now I know this isn’t going to by like Epic but having a Wardrobe similar to the Floo Network to enter a ride would be pretty cool

If I had the pick of UK based literature, I would sell a kidney to get a His Dark Materials land.

Give me a recreation of Svalbard with a Iorek meet and greet animatronic/puppet like Toothless please.

Was there any truth to Jaws speculation? Or is that not beloved to be in the park anymore? I think a universal park showcasing the three eras of Spielberg sounds really cool (Jaws, Back To The Future, Jurassic), especially if they also end up doing a version of his show from Beijing. Really speaks to my sensibilities and the era of Universal I'm a fan of.

Overall I gotta say, Jurassic, Bond, LoTR, Illumination, Paddington, Jaws? and Back To The Future is a great lineup. Probably one of the most balanced collection of IPs I've seen a park open with - all of these are pretty much four quadrant IPs that appeal to everyone, some for the kids, some for adults, and LoTR to corner that Potter/Star Wars fandom crowd that will buy all the merchandise Universal can poop out.
