That is a totally irresponsible budget for the equivalent of a "drawing room murder mystery." These companies can spend money however they want, but come on.

Well, that's probably reflective of how much they're giving up not giving it a full theatrical release, and how much value it provides to Netflix. Therefore, lot's of huge upfront payments.
Yep, with streaming-only, you've got to pay the talent the equivalent of the points they'd be asking for on a theatrical release gross, and that gets rolled into the budget. During the pandemic, studios had to do what they had to do to get projects out on streaming, but I don't see this as being a sustainable model for the long term. How do you justify that amount of money for the third KNIVES OUT movie? Where's the spreadsheet or equation proving that the studio is making a profit on the film based on new subscribers subscribing just to watch it? It can't possibly exist, because it's silly.

Hollywood accounting has always been a little bit of nonsense, but this takes it to a whole other level.

If we assume Netflix is acting rationally (big assumption!) it's possible that for every Knives Out 3 they're spending a fraction to release 10 mediocre but watchable series that get three seasons and are "abruptly" canceled. In that scenario, Knives Out is more about "prestige" than it is about subscriber growth.
