According to Park Rumors, The Saul Zaentz Company (owners of the LOTR movie/merch rights) have filed for a Middle-Earth theme park trademark. Means that there is at least some interest in using the property for a theme park land or attractions.

Good move on their part. Best to try to assert the rights they think they have. Certainly proves that there is interest.

From Screamscape yesterday (1/20):

"Rumor has it that members of NBC/Universal’s top brass were seen touringIslands of Adventure with members of Warner Bros and Comcast top brass this week, with a heavy focus on looking over every inch of Toon Lagoon, as well as showing off the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Early Middle-Earth talks maybe?"

Don't think they'd have Marvel and DC attractions in the same park, or maybe even the same resort.

That's definitely interesting. Either all the online buzz pushed them to do this before someone else does, or there's actual interest.

Oy. I almost wish the OU forum censored out "DC" and/or "DC Comics"

This.

Also, it could be a stretch but WB also owns Looney Tunes.

I think LOTR is the most likely, though.

They sell LoTR merch. They sell DC merch. WB owns LoTR films. WB owns DC films. Hobbit started off well with it's three-movie initiative. DC just cranked out the best Batman trilogy of all time, has a new Superman on the horizon, and are embarking on a JLA film with possible tie-ins. I don't think it's very likely either of these franchises are coming to Universal, but I'm not ruling out either.

DC would be a nice fall back option for Uni if they ever decided to move on from Marvel. However, I alomst feel they may not even want DC, if only because DC is very well known for being represented in Six Flags parks around the country. Universal doesn't want to be associated with Six Flags.

This is going to be Universal's "Saving Mr. Banks", isn't it?

Lord of the Rings is something that should totally happen, but at the same time I'm not completely sure about it. You need a LOT of space to pull it off correctly. Would Toon Lagoon or the remainder of Lost Continent really be enough?

Sure. You really don't want it to be too much where it drives away people who aren't fans of the franchise yet takes up a significant chunk of your park when you could be using a different IP/land/ride in an area to appeal to others.

What I'm saying is that LOTR is something that can't be too small. I don't mean that it should use space to an excessive amount, but it needs to have the right amount of space to really capture the scope of the whole mythology.

Just wondering....is the theme for Lord of the Rings too similar to Harry Potter?
