Pretty much, from what I've read and heard from those who have seen it, it's not even a sub-plot. It's a really miniscule thing, far less then what the articles are puffing itself up as.
For me when it comes to LeFou being touted as gay, I have to ask "Why Him?". LeFou, who translates as "The Fool", who's gonna' be longing after a man who probably doesn't have the same attraction towards him, and the most we're probably gonna' get from this is him confessing his "love" to Gaston when Gaston dies. As I said before, from what I've heard this whole thing is very miniscule, so does Disney really want brownie points for a tiny thing which can come off rather unnecessary and not so positive in it's portrayal?
I'm all fine and dandy with Disney having a openly gay character, but LeFou is not the kind of character I'd make that...nor be trying to tout it. (Meanwhile Prince John and Sir Hiss from Robin Hood are practically a couple, same with Jumba and Pleakley from Lilo & Stitch.)
