I don't think any of us are asking for a full replacement or at least not asking for a completely different ride. All we are asking is for a big refurbishment of the ride, like mega refurbishment. I would think the recent updates DisneyLand did but five fold.

I agree that E.T. is an essential ride just so Universal doesn't entirely wash its hands of any possible nostalgia that may woo people away from Disney. But it needs to keep up E.T. so it stops repulsing those who loved the ride as kids. I know because I'm one of them who loved E.T. at USH when I was growing up, and then when I went on it this past September, I was depressed by how poor it looked, and how much of its age that it's showing.

There's a great ride still there, waiting to captivate people. Universal just needs to put in the money and I think they got a ton of it. (I'm surprised they didn't refurb it for the 25th anniversary)

I really hope they do not replace in the near future. Everyone who has been on the attraction is aware that it does not have the best animatronics, but the film its self is still a classic especially to my generation, we always make sure will ride at least once per visit till Orlando as brings back great memories for my wife and I . My 3 year old niece is going to visit Orlando for first time in 2016 and out of all the things she is excited for its meeting the princesses (of course) and meeting E.T.

I had a perfect ride earlier this month. No horrible squeaking from the ride system and every effect was working.

Also, riding this with my 6-year-old niece really changes your perspective. When she's experiencing that mix of fear and joy that both the E.T. movie and ride gave me as a kid and then squealing, "Wow! We're really flying!," only later to want to clean out the E.T. gift shop (yet hadn't asked for a minion anything or even Frozen the day before).

I think this ride is more necessary to the park and it's younger audience than you think, especially when one of the biggest faults of the whole resort is that it doesn't have more dark rides like it.

Yes, the anamatronics are bad. But people don't get off "it's a small world" and say the animatronics were bad. You accept it as a creation of its time and the nostalgia is part of its charm, IMO.

A diamond in the rough. Like it's been said by my Pro E.T. contemporaries, the potential to have a great dark ride is there.

The reason it works is because they are dolls. E.T.'s 2nd half doesn't have a problem with crappy looking AA's because they're aliens, so we have nothing really to compare it too.

This. However the wall badly needs painted in Its a small world. Drives me crazy every time I ride. But the dolls themselves look great. When they have an issue they do fix them in a timely manner. They had a cut on one of the faces and it was fixed in a couple months. ET beginning AA humans to me are as bad as Peter Pan. The timing is also off as you can see the reset in some spots

I love seeing the cop crouch back down into place. I would love to see a refurb though.

Yeah, very good point.

I guess what I'm saying is I accept art and entertainment (including themed attractions) as a product of/respresentative of the period in which it was made. Kind of like watching, I dunno, "The Neverending Story" as an adult -- you don't mind the bad special effects becuase you accepted it as being fine when you experienced it the first time. Or a Saved by the Bell episode -- they were great at the time, but looking at it through a modern lens, it's a cheesy 90's time capsule.

I realize it's ridiculous to be having a high art discussion about the horrible policeman robot in the E.T. ride... BUT... I almost feel if they were to replace the policeman with a state-of-the-art animatronic it would feel a little anachronistic, no? (Perhaps I'm in the minority here :) )

A theme park ride is not a piece of art like a painting or movie. Like a play it can be improved over time. If that doesn't happen it 'll become a museum piece.
It's great you accept that and a company like Disney loves to sell you it as nostalgia so they don't have to invest but even Disney himself didn't like that concept.
I think it's great rides get plussed over time and if irrelevant for the mayority of the public get's replaced.

I for one hope ET stays. I still love the movie but the ride needs a huge update to make it better.

I don't mind updates, as long as it stays true to the original vision.

I feel Disney gets let off the hook too much when it comes to refurbishment..almost to the point of plussing being a negative..Universal is chastised for rides like ET and Twister...but I think a lot of that has to do with Universal's brand being all about hyper-technology integrated in a creative way

E.T. Adventure isn't going anywhere. Someone mentioned that being the only slow dark ride and that's true. Plus, it's the last remaining original attraction. Does Spielberg have any weight on what happens to it?
