something i find funny about the current discourse about “relevant IP” is that many of the biggest advocates for these nostalgic IPs weren’t alive when the movies came out. I was two when Jurassic Park came out. My mom was in grade school when Jaws was released. somehow, someway, even without the internet, these became staples of my childhood.

I guess my point is that these IP stay in the public consciousness because we still love them and share them with our kids. trying to anticipate the next mega hit, at a time when there are fewer mega hits than ever, seems like a bad strategy when you’ve got underutilized stuff people already love on your shelf.

Good quality concepts/stories/films that become loved by the public translate into longevity.

Just closing F&F would be an improvement for me... anything they either replace/retheme it with would be a cherry on top. Although if Back to the Future does indeed make a comeback, I would like to see it be a ground up attraction and not a retheme

The musical is garbage. It sells tickets but it’s already closed on Broadway. It’s not going to the have the longevity you want.

I have no problem with BTTF being represented in the parks whether in the parade, characters or merch.

However I feel like it’s just not ready yet for comeback as far as a ride goes. Who knows maybe in a few years I will change my mind.

Just my opinion.

BTTF is timeless, and I’d argue has broader appeal than the likes of JAWS/Ghostbusters. And that’s coming from a JAWS fanatic.

However…a reskin of the current ride system (for any IP) would unfortunately show that, while making incredible strides forward, old habits die hard.

It would definitely be another in a string of missed opportunities to start correcting the park's major problem (VillainCon and DreamWorks were, as well).

But if it has to be a re-skin (it doesn't, of course, but in Universal's mind it might), BTTF would be a very good choice. As I said, it's basically the only scenario I'd be okay with keeping the basic infrastructure/skeleton.

And maybe our collective assumption that it would be, essentially, a re-theme isn't giving Universal enough credit. Maybe they would go all the way and give BTTF the fully-new attraction it truly deserves. That would be fantastic.

But I'll take BTTF any way I can get it.

After SWGE, I think creatives realized you can't get too linear. Need to give lands flexibility. Ideally set in the 80s, but I also wouldn't mind it transitioning from 1955 - 1985 and then 2015. Would be cool.

this would bother me immensely as a bttf purist but i know im probably alone on this so ill let it slide lol

I'm not diminishing the movie or knocking it down, but it's not something that teens are talking about. not something that is been meme'd

the last game came out many years ago and didn't wasn't a huge hit, the Ghostbusters game was a much more bigger deal,

maybe the universal parade had really strong reviews and feedback.

i know there have been new monster adaptations but the monsters walking around in epic right now are from the 1930s…. i think universal is proving that if it’s in house and important to the company, it’s on the table.

I believe this BTTF rumor more now after seeing that Universal Studios GB map. One of the areas is clearly a BTTF land with a coaster, plus that Flux capacitor easter egg on Stardust Racers it seems they're really interested in having this IP back in the parks. It all makes sense. It is the 40th anniversary this year as well...

i second this. from that concept art. to fan fest nights, to the escape room and the parade and even cinesational, there is someone very high in management right now that loves bttf and we are lucky for it.

never in my wildest dreams did i imagine bttf could come back but here we are. now, a few questions remain. since it looks to be a coaster in the UK and obviously isn’t one here, does that mean universal is currently ideating two different bttf rides?

This is, ultimately, where I'm at. Back to the Future closing nearly 20 years ago (lol! everything is fine!) is a bummer in hindsight because the ride's major flaw was the ride system. And that was, obviously, not corrected by the Simpsons implementation.

I don’t understand why anyone here would think a re-theme is even remotely on the table. Back in 2013, sure? but what logic would there be in arguably taking one of the historically lowest reviewed rides in the history of the company and saying “hey, let’s just try again with new media”

I think Universal proved with Epic, even the JW dark ride, that they are taking big steps forward in what goes into their products.

I don’t think they want to even risk bringing back such a beloved ip and having people get off saying that felt like supercharged.

The logic would be "We want to have something else significant between now and the Springfield replacement without spending many multiple hundreds of millions of dollars."

I'm not willing to go that far until I start seeing that reflected at USF. But, to your point, maybe this could be the start.

yes I understand but, universal very recently tried to start a new monster movie universe  ( van Helsing is not that old)
and to be fair, Halloween horror nights just spent the last few years using the monsters for houses, and there's been recent TV shows and games using the monsters lol.
plus people dress like them for Halloween every year lol.
( but @saint.piss was right about the musical. that's a good point, )

Garbage according to who? Musical purists? you? back to the future fans? If you look at takings on broadway it actually did alright.

Its still going to strong in the UK, kids love it and although the music, save for a few songs, isnt memorable, I would not call it garbage.

It recreated a similar feeling to watching the movie for the first time, which is the best they could have hoped for.

Edit: they're also opening in Australia, japan, Germany, and have a cruise ship deal. Arent they touring america as well? (Definitely garbage!?)

I think you may be right in Universal's thinking but there's a fair argument to say that a re-theme of a pretty universally disliked ride system from one extremely popular ip to another extremely popular ip is not actually a significant change and doesn't move the needle in terms of improving the park.

Imagine if the most hated attraction in Universal history is replaced with an IP fans have been clamoring for.

"There will be temporary pain, but it will result in something really great." - Universal opening Supercharged in 2018

A retheme of the ride system could fit the BTTF theme much better than the F&F theme. Plus, the Kong attraction is actually very good, partly because it has a good 360 film. F&F doesn't fit the ride system and the 360 film is garbage.

I literally walked out at intermission. And having just (tried to) watch the National Tour last weekend, the response to it was largely muted. And that’s compared to a similar crowd I saw at Beetlejuice a month ago. And I’m in middle America.

The show already closed on Broadway (can’t find if it recouped). West End is still running but it’s a recognizable IP and a spectacle show. Launching new productions back-to-back (especially a cruise line version) doesn’t speak to that adaptation of the IP. It speaks to the production company trying to squeeze what it can while it can.

Putting the tinfoil hat on - the retro tribute stories that we've had the last few years were all part of an elaborate plan to measure response to these retro IPs.

I don't know that this even requires a tinfoil hat. I'm sure Universal knows which properties move merchandise at a good level, and I'm quite certain BTTF (and JAWS) sell more stuff that several of the IPs represented in the park.
