I'd argue about the nostalgia of both, but point taken about a female reboot.
Probably has to do with the 80's life. Back then it was black & white. Girls were supposed to watch "girl stuff" and boys watched "boy stuff".
"You play with your Barbie, I'll be playing the Ghostbuster firehouse!"
Today, it's a lot more complex (in a good way). i.e. If anyone was a brony in the 80's, they wouldn't be as "accepted" as they are today.
