WDW's ToT is insanely superior over DCA's in so many ways. The pure scale and approach is overwhelming in DHS. Standing in the queue looking out onto the gardens is such an eerie feeling of grandiose. It takes the factor of WDW's full removal from the outside world and takes full advantage of it. The HTH grounds are massive, the lobby is far eerie and has a grander presence. The boiler room is seedier. The elevator moves in all different directions, there are randomized drops and you exit in a different place from where you started.
DCA's version is what it is. It is basically fun-size ToT, plopped unspectacularly on the pavement in the corner of DCA. The exterior queue is a small holding pen with some light themeing elements that really don't work considering that you're next to a pathway, and really fails when a parade comes by. The lobby is a nice imitation despite being literally at the attraction entrance, although the crashed elevators are perpendicular with the hotel (facepalm)... I don't have too much of an issue with the garishly lit boiler room, but that hallway that leads from the elevator door to another door is so, so dumb. Even worse? When you board, you can actually hear the people in the other shaft screaming.
That said: I still wouldn't want the DCA Tower to be savaged for Marvel. The combination of the Hyperion, Red Car Trolley and ToT makes for a charming 1920s/1930s area, the building looks great at night and despite its faults the ride is still pretty damn fun, and eerie in spots. The screams upon boarding do unnerve first riders pretty easily, the bellhop CMs are still grim, funny and on-point. The capacity is far greater and there is a lot to see in that boiler room. But most importantly the drop and aesthetic is kept intact, and those are the aspects I treasure the most. I would love for randomized drops to be added to the experience (seriously why hasn't this been done already), but on WDW's once the drops started it felt mostly the same. I think with some improvements, DCA could be seen on a similar level. Any which way: I think it's still a good ride despite its faults.
Leave my towers be, Disney.
