Exorcist was also just purchased by Universal last year from WB, hence the upcoming Sequel Trilogy, so while it was a garbage repeat.... at least they poorly made use of their new toy.

Exorcist turns 50 next year, Sequel Part 1 is allegedly supposed to drop next year too.

I'll just never forgive Exorcist for being the first haunt to curse the event with Black Wall Plague. I think Murdy & Co realized the black wall, elevated boo box scare was super effective and easy to implement and just CTRL+V it into every maze now.

It was done a few times before that. I remember it starting in 2011 with The Thing and the ending of La Llorona. But you're right, I think Exorcist was when it worked so well, they figured "let's just do it in EVERY maze." Back then, it was really scary for Exorcist because it worked well for a maze that takes place in one room. Now it's just a bit annoying for mazes with so many locations, especially if the maze is an original.

I think Killer Klowns could be great if it's a new maze featuring the characters. If it's a retread of the first, I'll be disappointed.

And if it's a retread of the first with new gags and a changed finale?

Then I’ll be disappointed. That shouldn’t be the standard.

But--that's exactly what happened with La Llorona, was it not? Modifying the maze from 2011 to 2012, even making a completely new ending.

I think most of the issues last year were pandemic related, even Murdy said himself they were just lucky to have the event at all.

La Llorona was like 50% new in 2012, honestly. The entire statue section for the first 1/3 of the maze was gone, so was the graveyard, and then there was a new ending. So if Killer Klownz can do that, I'd be decently excited about it. I'd much prefer an entirely brand new thing though. If they want to reuse a gag or two, by all means, can't get worked up over 2 similar scenes. I remember when they did the TCM Blood Brothers "sequel" and that honestly felt just like the original TCM maze with a different lighting package, maybe a new scene or two with the new brother, and that was it. So here's hoping it's more actual sequel or La Llorona style repeat.

Some of you may remember me in the earlier years of posting on the forums how vehemently against repeats I have been. Now that the event has grown to have eight houses without a year-round house plus the tram, I wouldn't mind a total repeat with a few improvements. Yes. I said it. I'll say it again. I actually would not mind one total repeat with a few possible improvements. Technically we've had a repeat every single year factoring the House of Horrors overlays and TWDA. So if one repeat meant helping out with the budget, I'm cool with it. That means one less house I have to do on a crowded night. I'd be against a repeat back in the early 2010's when the event didn't have five built-from-the-ground-up houses, but now that we're at eight....a repeat is fine. Just as long as it isn't Halloween or TCM.

I do have an issue with literally half of the line-up being total repeats, which is what looks like this year will be....again. I understand last year had a lot going against it, but it kind of confirms my fears of management going "Wow! People love repeats! The worst repeat of all time won house of the year! Let's do MOAR REPATZ!!!!!" A line-up with half of it being repeats should not be the norm.

If we have to do repeats... let's not repeat IPs. Llorona is fine since it's "original" & it's been 10 years.

Hell, we know Murdy has a Chupucabra maze treatment shelved, one has to wonder how many other non-IP mazes have been shelved. Still waiting for Alice Cooper 3.0 too.

But I'd almost prefer they look into pre-Murdy early year mazes & bring those back re-imagined. They had a few non-IP mazes back then.

If Universal needs IPs, use in-house ones even if they're old. Come on, Orlando had like 3-4 Psycho mazes over the years. Wake up Hollywood!

Lemme say this,
As far as last year goes, HHN was dope and the best event of 2021 SoCal haunt season and this is coming from a HHN critic.
My rankings were

The Exorcist
Halloween 4
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Pandora’s Box
The Bride of Frankenstein Lives
The Haunting of Hill House
Terror Tram: The Ultimate Purge
The Walking Dead Attraction

Now for this year’s rumored lineup, I think it’s gonna be really good. Would I prefer Halloween 2018 house? Yes, but I don’t mind the original coming back. Candyman is my most anticipated house (once announced) and I think Evil Dead will be dope as I enjoyed Ash vs Evil Dead in 2017. I understand the criticism with reusing previous IPs/houses but it’s been good so far.

Tbh, as much as I dislike direct repeats, I feel like this years are more or less passable, we havent seen La Llorona in a decade, and to a lot of attendees it'll be brand new, Killer Klowns was (imo) the best maze of 2019, so getting to experience that again is welcome to me, plus, in both of those cases thats assuming they change next to nothing, there's still a good chance they'll at least make some different choices. Halloween is probably the most annoying repeat given that it's really not had a break, and already had 5 previous mazes under its belt as a franchise, but even then, they've made it clear that it at least won't be a direct copy-paste job from 2015, and if the facade so far is any indication, they might finally have the budget to really do the original justice. Seeing how it looks now, and how much closer the scale is to the real house, really made me realize just how truncated and smushed the 2015 facade was.

La Llorona is passable being at the event is passable due to the fact that she has been at the event since 2012. It'll be good to see her come back and hopefully with another new and fresh look compared to the others. Killer Klowns From Outer Space honestly, its a classic and got achieved a lot of praise from people, 2019's maze was interesting and hopefully this version could reticfy some of those scenes hopefully, I didn't see a prequel or sequel waiting in the wings honestly, it seemed like they wanted another crack at it because they got a hold of it again.

I mean...when I hear all this news it just makes my wallet happy I wont have to pay for a Premium HHN Pass...lol

I wonder how many years they could get away with repeating mazes and themes...honestly I guess it could work forever since most the public seems not to care which mazes are they they will go

It's really sorta what Mike was talking about at Spooky Empire where there honestly a lot of white whale properties and a lot of em yes seem like duds in a way to fans but others are really sorta just passionate properties that both coasts like. Of course sometimes the mazes could tell a different story in the case of Hollywood. There are some mazes that deserve repeats like Klowns and others that honestly was a good idea on paper but bad idea to execute again like The Exorcist.

While for theme parks im fine with the same old rides

Mazes id like changed every year and with new films, games, podcasts and shows out....we have tons to work with.

If people are fine with it cool but I was Resident Evil and not Halloween....again. I want new and exciting and like one classic IP but they have monsters, Halloween already plus im sure more classics...to me thats kinda boring but like I said the general public seems not to care so they will mlik what they can and make easy money

That's the thing is a lot of things like Resident Evil and Halloween, especially the new ones are sorta rights hell atm, so Hollywood really just grasps and acquires what they can, not every ip will come to the event, not every ip that fans of the event will like will come to the event, they do what they can and honestly creative really picks sometimes what they wanna see at the event which is not a bad thing, some stuff honestly seems like they're marketable decisions to promote sometimes as well, I'm not like the other gp but sometimes people are now just now glad the event is back because two years ago doesn't seem so far to not remember. I think people right now are just glad the event is happening again for another year.

Per Legacy, there's been another bout' of chaos, and that we should have more clarity on what is and what could not be this week. Naturally a lot of folks thought it was related to Orlando, however there's a very good chance this chaos is actually more directed over here.

Some folks feel that Candyman is no more, and if that turns out to be the case, my gut feeling says its replacement is at least The Black Phone, if not another Blumhouse of Horrors paired with Freaky.

Slight Edit - Of course, there's always the rumor of bad blood between HW and Blumhouse, either way it seems like we won't have to wait long on what's going on.
