Went on opening night! Here’s my full-rundown of my event. Will be reviewing everything in order of accomplishment. This will be a fairly spoiler-free review. I will not mention scenes that won’t be obvious.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Not a crazy huge FNAF fan, but this was still my most-anticipated of the event. Aside from the very obvious blunder at the beginning where it’s just Freddy performing, I thought the rest of the house was great. I was pleasantly surprised with how little they relied on the ghost kids and the few times they did, it worked great! Also zero black walls…which is very refreshing for an HHN Hollywood house. I enjoyed it!

Grade: B+

Terrifier: There was a crazy amount of hype for this house. Thankfully I managed to get in before the entire crowd mobbed the house, because i would’ve been pissed waiting four hours for that stupid house. Anyway I did it and unfortunately, I just wasn’t feeling it. Maybe I just a bad run through but I felt very underwhelmed with this house. The experience felt kinda passive. It also didn’t feel like a Terrifier house and more like a random house at HHN with Art thrown in there. IDK maybe I’ll get a better run through but I wasn’t feeling it. For now, it’s overrated and overhyped. It doesn’t help anything that I watched Orlando’s pov and that looked fantastic!

Overall: C

Poltergeist: Liked the house back in 2018, even despite the black walls….but man this really sticks out against the rest of the lineup. House was rough, but the ending was still great. Other than that….this house was really outdated. Meh. I’d rather skip it but I know I can’t because the line for this house will generally be short lol

Overall: D

Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse: This is absolutely one of the better Terror Trams. It’s up there with the 2016 one. I hope they stick with this formula moving forward by having this more of an “outdoor house” or “mini houses” along the path because it was very effective! I actually got a couple of jumps here! Well done Murdy!

Overall: B-

Fallout: Okay this one was awesome! Might be my favorite house in the Hudson Gate building. This felt like a true Orlando sound stage house. Vault 33 was VERY realistic and insanely detailed. Surprisingly intense. What really made the house for me was….that room. I don’t want to spoil it for those who have yet to go through it but it created a huge “Wow!” moment from me. Very impressive, but VERY short. I’m willing to forgive the brief black wall transitions because one, they were very brief, and two, the rooms were amazing enough to where I didn’t care lol. Easily my second favorite of the event.

Overall: A

WWE: Horrors of Wyatt Sicks: I’m not a wrestling guy, but this was really good! I didn’t get an amazing run through but I got some good jumps! This was also a nice-looking house. I’ll be hitting this one up more often. Solid house.

Overall: B+

Scarecrow: Music by Slash: Despite this being the second repeat of the event, it’s a good one! The original scarecrow was one of my all-time favorite houses ever, so it’s not terrible they brought this back. Although I will always prefer the original version, I had a good time with this one! The music was fine. Again, I still think part of what made the original great was the minimalistic soundtrack.

Overall: B

Chainsaw Man: The Chaos: Don’t care much for the anime but this was the better of the shows in the HHN DWT overlays. I was pleasantly surprised with how they utilized the side walls for this show. It’s not much but it’s a good way to rest your feet for 10/15 minutes. Check it out.

Overall: B

*Skipped the Purge Dangerous Waters as I assume it will be the same show and I wanted to prioritize all the houses. Maybe another time.*

Monstrous 3: Ghosts of Latin America: I’ve always enjoyed the Monstrous entries, but I think this one is my least favorite. It also didn’t help that I got a “meh” run through. It’s mainly my least favorite as it was essentially La Llorona 4.0, which was what I was afraid it would be. If they’re gonna do it, I really wish we would get an alternate vantage point of the river scene where we are under water and see the kids above us face-down. That would be awesome but I understand this was more of a budgetary decision. Oh well. It’s fine.

Overall: B-

Jason Universe: Saved the best for last. I got an AMAZING run through of this house. Man this house was intense! This felt like a glorious comeback to the HHN of old: Gritty, scary, gruesome kills, and in-your-face. There was one scene that seemed to be missing scareactors, but eh the house was great! Easily my number one

Overall: A+

Scarezones are fine. Would be nice if they changed up something besides Crowz. Liked the Hillibilly zone.

Although this year does have a few flaws (Poltergeist, Terrifier being a little overhyped, and the first scene at FNAF), this is overall a very, and I mean VERY solid year. Not sure if I prefer it over 2016, but it’s absolutely up there with 2023. This year is in my top 5 at least. I’m not sure when I’ll be back (Maybe Sunday?) but I REALLY enjoyed this year! I’ll be back multiple times for sure!

I went today.

My ranking list (in order)

Jason Universe
Terrifier
Scarecrow
Blumtram
FNAF
Monstrous 3
Fallout
The Horrors of the Wyatt Sicks
Poltergeist

I don’t think any of the houses are scary but I had alot of fun! My family and I bought general admission w/ EE but since of my family members had a disability card, we moved through Express for every house and the Blumtram. We started at 5:30 pm and ended at 8 pm which included the scaremony. We repeated several house and the Blumtram.

Jason Universe may be the best house of the year from any event that occurs in 2025.
Art is cemented as an icon and is immortalized after his introduction to HHN.

Opening Night of HHN 2025 Complete and man is this one if HHN's best years! Don't think it tops 2016 from a design and line-up standpoint but definitely a personal experience one (thats a story for another day tho lol)

Inital Rankings for the houses & Tram, all range from solid to HELL YEA!!!

9. Poltergiest - Solid house, was the first house I worked on with lights, so have some attachment to it. Had a good run, the actors are whats making this house for me but otherwise it really shows its age against the rest of this line-up. The long-blackhallway is shortened by a bit and the clown is fun. But otherwise its alright.

8. Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse 15 Years - Did not expext this to be as good ad it was! Its a much improved version of last years, it felt more like an outdoor house than a gaint scarezone if that makes any sense lol. Grabber with Heely's is peak, The Insidious section works along with the Exorcist Believer portion, much better than last years Freaky/HDD and Black Phone, Purge is about the same probably the weakest part, but the finale felt like what every Blumhouse of Horrors should of ended like with final scares from each of the franchises! A top Terror Tram for Sure!!

7. Five Nights at Freddy's - Alright, lets get Scene One out of the way. Yes, its pretty dissapointing we ONLY get Freddy, having all 3 would have been one of the most IMPRESSIVE scenes they would of ever done, but idk Freddy was still cool. If they removed those curtains, they could sell the idea of Chica and Bonnie having already left to stalk you thru the Pizzeria, that would of worked better imo. But other than that this house is still very inpressive! Not scary in the slightest, glad those kid scares are masked ngl than make-up but they are still pretty tame, short ppl only scare me so much already being a short person. The animatronics and sets tho are impressive, while limited in there movements still gald they are puppeted and the sets you can tell where designed by Orlando while still feeling built like from Hollywood, maybe its the lighting cuz judging by the videos, Orlando really loves their Red while we go for more subdued colors.

6. Fallout - As someone who knows Jack-shi about Fallout, I was suprised by this one! Its relatively short and some empty openess to some of the rooms, but dam are thoae rooms huge! Well desgined scares, great lighting and that BEAR! Holy cow did I not expect it to be THAT huge, no video is ever gonna do it justice. Can say I was suprised and it exceeded my expectations

5. Terrifier - This is a fun funhouse! Sets are simple but like Chucky they work well for Arts antics, tho unlike Chucky is not as Chaotic as it coulda been and not as Gorey, its standard for what HHN has done before. Same with smell tho I think WWE has a more noticable and innate smells, and the water effects are standard at best tho I was dodging all of them all letting the ladies behind me getting hit, they were screaming lol. Art himself tho is fantastic, hes already a great character than he is able to play up the house and if you interact with his antics its an even better experience. Do the mask detract? Imo not really but I could see it for some even tho I did not expect them to make-up 20+ Art actors just for this house. That's what the outside ones are for tho I gues that makes expectations for the ones inside. Still tho I had fun with it.

4. Monstruos Tres: The Ghost of Latin America - What a way to end of the trilogy, sad Monstruos is ending but this is a perfect send off and at the right time. Half of the house being La Llorona isn't as bad as it could of been, she has some great scares and the puppets are horrific as always. La Muelona's sections is short but a rapid bash of attacks along with El Siguanada who is already a better section than Cadejo for just being able to provide more movement than a puppet can. Muerte is iconics its gonna be hard to say good bye to the character. The final works for the "Are you afraid of the dark" and I wish the other 2 Monstruos had a similar finale where all 3 at the end attack, love this Monstruos finale!

3. WWE Presents: The Horrors of the Wyatt Sicks - another were I knew nothin but after som research because of intrigue and I'm glad this house is as good as it is. Its a welcoming love letter and respects thr Legacy of Bray Wyatt as a creative person. This falls more into the mystical and trippy landscape then one would expect. That first blackwall section actually works because ofnhow it uses the fireflies and uncle Howdy at the end of the hallway. And these actors are big and AGRESSIVE, as if they were Wrestlers lol! WWE fans (expect maybe one lol) are EATING.

2. Jason Universe - One complaint, its short. Other than that MAN is this a fun and great Slasher house! Like a Micheal or a Leatherface, this is a slasher showing of what it means to be a slasher, having fun kills while also still having good scare oppurtunities. The sets are simple in the forest and interior scenes but Jason doesn't need extravengance! He works well when in close and dark enviorments! Audio is also very good, was watching Friday the 13th part 2 recently and I forgot how campy it sounds but its translated very well here. The influencer parts are small but if you notice them its a fun addition.

1. Scarecrow: Music by SLASH - Repeat this... repeat that... I DON'T CARE, SCARECROW ROCKS! It was amazing in 2022 and it was better here in 2025, I don't know why I doubt it lol. It is missing the bird's pooping, not too big of a deal but that scene does feel a bit redundant, but otherwise its the same! The scareactors here are agressive, and the sets with the lighting feel dark and grim! Love the variety in scarecrow looks and KING CROW is King! And now for the big change being the audio with the introduction of the Slash score. Idk about ya'll but i f×+k with it HARD. Its got this great industrial and Sinners (AlexBushtm) feel with some sick ass guitar riffs! Lyrics too that feel in vain of the themes Scarecrow represents. The song will definitely sway ppl personal preferance on this years or 2022's iteration, but even without it Scarecrow is still scarecrowing, that is to say it still a top HHN quality house!

Early Access + Express

ARRIVAL
Got to Universal around 4:40pm, the 405 closure ruined my usual on-ramp and caused a back up, creating a delay so I was a bit later than I would have liked. Got through security and the lines to get in pretty fast and get our Express tickets quickly — I was in the park at 5:10pm. Didn’t realize that Fast & Furious was almost completely done, that was so much fun to look at from the Starway (but it’s a bit of an ugly warehouse to see by the Plaza and Hogsmeade, no?). Then we went straight down to…

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S
[Advertised Wait: 25 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 5:50pm. In the maze: 5:54pm.]
The scares were soft but I actually…dug it? Loved the facade and man, the sets in here were beautiful. If there is any takeaway, I love the design and the overall vibe. That first room is massive and detailed, but then the curtains do kinda ruin it and that first scare can be seen from a mile away. I will say every puppet scare is a fail, including the REALLY bad hands coming out of the walls — who approved that?! The main thing keeping this afloat in the scare department is the dead/ghost kids. Luckily, there’s a good mixture of both, so you can be impressed by the puppets/set design as a distraction, and get a good jolt elsewhere. Some puppet scares were just too far away though, like the ones coming down a hallway, which is fun to watch but feels more afternoon dark ride-y — which, hey, if Universal wants to put the money into, since they won’t pull the trigger on a Universal Monsters one, I wouldn’t be mad about FNAF getting that treatment. Best scare in the maze is the arcade section — I had no idea a scare would come from there, so that one got me. The maze picks up on scares for a bit and then it kinda just…ends (more on that later). Overall, conceptually I just love this idea and even the movie, which is too dumb for its own good as a bit of guilty pleasure. If this comes back next year in a NEW maze, I’d be all for it. The puppets looked good, the sets were full of details, and you can tell they put a lot of love (and money) into this. This felt like classic HHN to me, but super-sized and a little softer in scares. We come to this event to walk through our favorite properties and this felt like that, so hopefully fans are happy.

SCARECROW: MUSIC BY SLASH
[Advertised Wait: 25 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 5:50pm. In the maze: 5:54pm.]
Going through this time and I kinda realized…was this maze ever that good to begin with? This felt exactly the same as I remember it and it’s not like the maze had fatigue — if anything, I’d say this cast was rocking it hardcore, with the highest intervals between scares I saw all night. But the story of this maze and overall presentation just feels…basic? I remember the first year, I said it could’ve been better and this time it really hit me that genuinely there’s something missing here in terms of storytelling to give it any wow factor. It doesn’t try anything new and it feels repetitive. Oh yeah, didn’t even notice the music — I guess it was fine? I’m only giving this a higher mark than the tone of my review simply because this cast was just going for it.

JURASSIC WORLD
Still no “Welcome to the Jungle?!” Noticed there were way more spitter Dinos, I’m guessing this was a summer add on? One of them came randomly before any real trouble started, I thought that was a choice. Anyway, ride looks good, all the effects are working. Already bored of the Jurassic World elements, I know it’s impossible and costly, but going back to Park would be best for business…

WWE: THE HORRORS OF THE WYATT SICKS
[Advertised Wait: 15 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 6:19pm. In the maze: 6:30pm. They told me the maze was open at 6:19pm but that was a lie, so we wasted 11 minutes standing here.]
There are parts in here where I truly went WOW and some parts where I went…”uhhhh?” First thing I noticed was the swamp ground sticker on the floor outside the facade…this is the first time they’ve ever done something like this, from my recollection. I mean it looked SUPER fake and almost pointless, but I give them points for doing…something. And as for any of Bray’s or Uncle Howdy’s ramblings, you could barely hear them, so if anything here could help set up the story, it’s completely going over people’s heads. On to the maze. Now, unlike most reviews you’ll probably read, I am an actual WWE fan and have some knowledge going in. While I didn’t think this maze should have happened, I do think they made their best case for its existence. My issue is a lot of these characters are presented in WWE and truly just…aren’t that scary. They don’t ever “actually” kill anyone or even attack them in horrific ways. In fact, Bray Wyatt lost a lot of matches against fairly regular people all the time and the Wyatt Sicks themselves have been off of TV for most of the year and were randomly given the WWE Tag Team titles just recently (my guess is to make this maze seem more…relevant? I don’t know.) The first scene with the light walls was super impressive. As the maze went deeper though., the more I questioned — “what the hell is going on?” My best guess is we’re being indoctrinated into the Wyatt Sicks but also that seems…wrong? However, it wouldn’t be the only time a maze this year’s story is wonky, even if taken at face value in earnest. A few other wrestlers make appearances in the maze as victims, such as LA Knight, Jey Uso, and Finn Balor — wish some of them were actual actors instead of dummies though. Or were these supposed to be WWE fans? See, I don’t know, it’s all unclear. Mirror room was cool and I loved the Alexa Bliss scrim on the swing, just wish she got a scare. Despite not knowing what the hell was going on, the cast was truly aggressive and imposing. They were able to get in your face from far distances and be menacing. I’m not sure if the attack elements always made sense, but at least they were going for it. With that said, I’d say this was overall the best cast of the night and everyone fit their roles perfectly. The aforementioned Alexa Bliss looked enough like her that I had to double take and see if it was really her. And then the maze sorta just…ends (noticing a trend here…more on that later). Despite all its shortcomings on a storytelling front, I actually dig the maze. It’s not a total disaster. It’s not that great either. And best of all? The line will always be short. As an original offering, it doesn’t really entice anyone. And as much as they try to sell it on the walls of the Jason Universe maze of all places, none of it truly makes sense still (and even if you could hear it, it still wouldn’t make sense because Bray and Uncle Howdy’s ramblings are kinda nonsensical but I guess that tracks for a swamp cult leader). The maze is fun enough and that’s the best we could have asked for.

JASON UN1V3RSE
[Advertised Wait: 50 minutes GA, 10 minutes EX. Time In Line: 6:40pm. In the maze: 6:44pm.]
Now THIS is what I am talking about, baby, maze of the year! Love the new queue space and the ability to project stuff on the wall. Entering, things were already off on the right foot. Crazy Ralph being a mask is…a choice though. I could tell there seemed to be a new story present and I realized this isn’t all the movies simply presented here…this is a remake of part 1-7 but set in modern times. Murdy really likes killing influencers, huh? And man, this maze was glorious. VERY FIRST SCENE you get a triple scare. This was just a constant go go go of Jason attacking you in every direction. It sounded and looked beautiful in every way and I loved the interpretation. I think they could do more with the car attack moment, there’s no scare here, that I can remember. The next scene at the camp ground was AWESOME and smelled great. Just so much havoc. My favorite bit is the guy being electrocuted, just such a cool visual. Another awesome moment is the bow and arrow attack, just brutal. The maze then randomly ends after all the variations attack you. Now I wouldn’t say this is the best Jason maze they’ve done, but also not the worst iteration. Maybe somewhat on par with the Camp Blood mazes in 2007-2008, but slightly more intense. It was very solid and I have only very few negatives, so this is easily my favorite. Is it just me or do all the mazes seem oddly short this year? I am actually impressed they found a way to get every version of Jason from 1-7 in this maze. You got kid Jason, baghead Jason, Jason finding the mask, dead Jason, resurrected Jason, and Jason that was chained to the bottom of the lake and had decayed a bit. Maybe the only thing here missing is copycat Jason from part 5? Who knows, but fans will be very happy.

MARIO KART
[Advertised Wait: 5 minutes GA. Time In Line: 7:40pm. In the ride: 8pm.]
There’s gotta be a better way to get through this queue when its empty. Also for whatever reason, at the end, they were only using one lane even though both sides of the ride were open, so it just created a weird hold up after the pre-show room. The ride is in great condition still and I love being able to utilize it during HHN. I’m hoping next year they open it up to everyone — could it be used as a scare zone? I would hope so, but I doubt they’ll do it.

MONSTROUS 3
[Advertised Wait: 30 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 8:34pm. In the maze: 8:35pm.]
This was fun, but it’s time for something new. To get it out of the way, this honestly felt like a La Llorona remake with new interpretations for the first half. All the monsters, while different stories, felt similar enough and wore similar enough clothes, that it almost seemed like a consistent story. I do think the music is too action packed and I wish they took a more calm and eerie approach. Out of all the La Llorona iterations though, this one definitely had the most simple and boring makeup. There was a new La Llorona scene I don’t think I noticed before and that was a living room space with kids being told a story and then La Llorona is at the window. Then it’s back to the usual fare of kids being eaten. The “are you afraid of the dark” moment at the graveyard was a cool effect, I just wish the scrim was able to be closer so that scare could work. You get a typical triple attack at the end but by that point, this seemed like it built up to its finale the most naturally out of all the mazes this year, so good job design wise on that. I liked the maze for what it was, but man it felt like old territory. Maybe my second favorite of the trilogy since Cucuy seemed so neutered last year, but def the worst of all the La Llorona mazes.

FALLOUT
[Advertised Wait: 35 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 8:42pm. In the maze: 8:43pm.]
Lowkey, this maze kinda slaps and could’ve been great if it were longer. I think it just gave a different vibe from all the other mazes this year, that sci-fi element was a nice little deviation from everything else. Didn’t see any of the queue videos, we were in and out too fast. The opening few scares were so quick and back to back, they were really packing them all in. The set design was flawless and beautiful, I’d say easily the best if FNAF wasn’t also around this year, but I wouldn’t argue anyone who says these are better. There was a really cool performance moment the Red Skull dude (don’t know his name lol) did in the graveyard scene where it looked like he was trying to come out of the casket incrementally and when he finally did, he flew out to attack. Great moment! The bear was HUGE, that really got me. Super Duper Mart had a lot of zombie action going on that felt a little too familiar in this building. And then the maze, as you guessed it, just ended! I had a fun time in here though. The vibe wasn’t scary, but it still wasn’t passive in the least and was a little more intense than I thought it could be. Wouldn’t be my first pick but they did it justice and my friend who was a huge Fallout fan and came to the event ONLY for this (he hates scary stuff) was very happy.
B

TERROR TRAM
[Advertised Wait: 30 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 9:02pm. In the maze: 9:08pm.]
Better than last year and that was already a high mark! We had weird timing in the beginning though because the chainsaw dudes were scaring the last tram and just scaring for our tram, not giving us our own moment. Oh well. The Black Phone 2 stuff was great, but there was something here driving me crazy and I noticed it on all the mazes too…the audio samples are on rotation WAY too much, oh my God, it was driving me crazy. If “Last of the Van Helsings” last year was annoying, prepare for something like that in EVERY. SINGLE. ATTRACTION this year. Like dude, we’re not running through these, the audio clips are easily heard THIRTY times minimum in some areas. Anyway, the Grabber on wheelies was INSANE — my guess is he was supposed to be ice skating. I actually thought this was a cool section to get me hyped for the movie. Insidious at the Bates Motel oddly…made sense? A lot of the triggers here actually worked on me. Random Exorcist hallway was…random, but it was something. Gotta make use of the expensive rights I guess. Purge stuff was actually kinda cool because of the new character designs. The finale was great and brought it all together. Man, ANOTHER SOLID YEAR for the Terror Tram and I can’t believe I am saying that. I even want to say it was better than last year’s and is easily one of the best trams they’ve done since 07-09, or the first time they did The Walking Dead or Hollywood Harry. The “outsize maze” layout truly is what Tram needed and I hope they stick with it even with other properties. Or are we going to be stuck with Blumhouse on the tram forever?…Honestly, if this is the route they’re going with, not the worst fate.

DINNER
Got my souvenir sipper and this whole system was a freakin’ mess. ALL the soda at every refill station was warm & flat and there was ZERO ice, with most stations missing at least half of the flavors. What a complete rip off. On top of that, the design on the cups is so lame considering how many IPs are at the event this year. I regretted buying it the moment I grabbed it. Ate at Three Broomsticks, which I have recommended every year, but I promise you this the easiest place to eat in all of the park during HHN. I also tried the Fazbear pizza…yeah, another regret. I know it wasn’t going to be anything different from what Universal usually offers, but I thought I’d do it for the mems. And yeah, that was 15 bucks of a crappy small pizza — my friends wanted to keep the box, which I noticed A LOT of people were doing. That little Studio Cafe got kinda crowded at some points, but nowhere near as long as it would have been if they actually made a whole Fazbear’s area like they should have. The Jason s’more I heard was cold. Oh well.

POLTERGEIST
[Advertised Wait: 55 minutes GA, 5 minutes EX. Time In Line: 10:40pm. In the maze: 10:49pm.]
A mixed bag returns to continue to be a…mixed bag. I think some of the audio had been redone with new sound clips being recorded, but overall, everything else felt similar just enough. I noticed some of the changes but honestly they should’ve been there in the first place so they didn’t really impress me much — this maze should’ve been an improved version of THAT to begin with. Also, the finale graveyard stuff wasn’t as good this year, or at least my run through was missing some people. It’s still intense just enough though, but it oddly doesn’t fit in this year with the rest of the properties.

TERRIFIER
[Advertised Wait: 100 minutes GA, 20 minutes EX. Time In Line: 10:55pm. In the maze: 11:22pm. That’s right, we waited TWENTY SEVEN MINUTES with a freakin’ Express pass!]
We all walked out of this maze going, “was it just me or did that suck?” “that sucked, right?” “Yeah, that wasn’t good,” “wasn’t scary, it just tried to be gross, and it wasn’t even that.” And before you ask, yes, we saw the maze “fully on” and got every intended scare. And still somehow — oof. Guess you can say we found our least liked of the year and I was looking forward to this one (even though I don’t like the movies), so I was shocked that was the case. I was with some fans of the movies and even they were disappointed. So what went wrong here? Let’s unpack. First of all, the Express line took FOREVER. When I left later, it was going all the way up the hill — I WAS SHOCKED they let it get this long. What is WITH this location that it is ALWAYS jam packed? Anyway, the face is pretty cool, but the newspaper intro was…a boring way to start this. Then there was a random bighead Art — just didn’t seem like time to do it? The sawed in half clown and the upside down saw in half seemed too soon as those are pretty bloody kills and should’ve built up to them. Then the bleach getting shot didn’t really work as a room, it’s just not scary. The salt on the wound kill didn’t have a good enough scare associated with it. The Dolly Mauly room (???) didn’t have the head spinning effect working, but beside that, another room with a kill that doesn’t have a good scare to go with it. I liked the Clown Cafe scene, but the scare can be seen from way ahead. And oh wow, a poop room. Luckily, the smells weren’t too bad in here. But man, this room just seemed stupid with Art just turning around as…the scare? One creative scare is Art pretending to be a worker, but the maze kinda goes off the rails because it’s supposed to be Art…killing the employees of the maze? Which would be fun, but they don’t fully commit. The story here is all over the place. The Christmas section is fun to look at but Art with a chainsaw is WAY too far away to be effective. Then we get some weird snow/water hallways and the maze just ends. What happened to the multiple routes that were promised? And I came out of the maze completely dry — not a single water effect was on, working, and from what I saw, there weren’t even that many of them? Not like I’m saying I WANTED to get wet, but wasn’t there some promises of being completely soaked coming out of here? Murdy was all like “you don’t get an option here!” As if that was some threat, but the Orlando audiences are much more soaked going through. Ugh, yeah, this maze was lame. It had everything going for it and somehow it just isn’t scary or even all that fun. They went ALL IN on the Terrifier stuff this year so I can’t imagine this is the last we see of Art the Clown, but my only hope is they do a much more intense and scary maze next time.

CHAINSAW MAN: THE CHAOS
[Advertised Wait: 30 minutes GA, 10 minutes EX. Time In Line: 11:41pm. In the show: 11:55pm.]
My friends kinda just wandered into this one as I had no intention of seeing it, but I figured I’d be open minded. Welp. At least I got to sit. To make this short, everyone I asked “what was going on” all had the same response — “I don’t know, I kinda just blanked out.” Huh, same. At some point, my brain just went to commercial break. The wind effects were nice and felt cool, so on a hot night, this will be a godsend. As for my brain, it totally went to mush. On a positive note, I saw Kevin Owens (WWE wrestler, one of my favs) while I was here. I know I am not the intended audience for this, but I truly do mean this, unless you have ABSOLUTELY nothing else to do, do literally anything else. It is also INSANELY long.

THE PURGE: DANGEROUS WATERS
Caught the 12:30 show, wandered in at 12:15am as they were letting people in — much easier experience than I’ve had before instead of being jam packed in the queue. Funny enough, saw Kevin Owens again. Anyway, this show has not changed much since I first saw it two years ago and I remembered every single beat. My friend leaned over, who had not seen it, and said “I don’t know who to root for.” Yeah, I said the same exact thing in my review the first time I saw it, and I wish they made that more clear in re-writes over time but I guess people like it exactly as is — or maybe not, as I saw an entire stand or two almost empty off to the sides. This is an appropriate detour in the night, but if you’ve seen it before and you have other things to get to, you’re not missing much. I think it’s time to change it up though...like…c’mon.

SCAREZONES
The lower lot felt like it’s own scarezone dedicated to ONE Art the Clown shaking his shaker at people. Hellbullyz was short and I think they could’ve extended it a bit, but that was a fun quick horror moment. Upper lot entrance to the Plaza was full of energy all night. But once again, the absolute best zone was French Street. The brujas were KILLING it and there was so much mood, fog, and classic haunt vibes. I ran into several Arts throughout the night and they were all doing a great job and people loved filming him. Such a great move that works for his character. I definitely felt like this is the best we’ve had scarezones in a while.

REVENGE OF THE MUMMY
Some of the effects have seen better days. It feels like they’re just letting this ride fall apart before they close it down. Also, the ride breaks down several times a night. What’s going on?

LAST 30 MINUTES LOWER LOT REPEAT CRAWL
Went back to the lower lot and did WWE, Jason, and FNAF (in that order). Did a pretty quick run through of them from 1:30-2am in the regular lines. My first run through of WWE was okay, but this second time is what my review was mainly based on and what helped my feelings about these being the best performances in the event. Also saw some things I missed the first time on Jason and FNAF — sadly those weren’t rocking as well as they were earlier in the night. Had these REALLY annoying kids behind me on FNAF, but didn’t ruin the experience — they said it was the worst maze they went through that night, and I don’t blame ‘em, it’s just too bad they didn’t get to see it at full throttle (they also said they only got through like 3-4 mazes so…).

OVERALL
Mazes this year were solid and even the worst maze, I gave it a C- (Terrifier). No F’s, not even D’s. Quality is abundant and fans are eating (figuratively and literally, with every food place being transformed). Last year I went once, this year I am considering coming back (although it’s uncertain at this point, mostly from a finances standpoint). Considering the lineup, things could have been a lot worse. What’s saving it is all the money they thew at it. Did Murdy’s hopes of pushing the event to be more scary come true? Not necessarily, but across the board, at least none of these experiences were passive like A Quiet Place or Stranger Things. What about his claims this was the best lineup since 2016? Now hold on there, bucko — nice try, but no cigar. MAYBE the best year post-Covid. I’d say it’s a fairly mid-tier year on the higher end, and there’s nothing wrong with that. And while Jason was my absolute favorite, there’s some other all-timers standing in it’s way, including it’s own brothers Kill, Jason, Kill (09) and Freddy vs. Jason (16).

I do want to point out though how every maze this year kinda just ends. No finale moment, no jaw droppers, everything suddenly just stops and you’re like, wait, what, that’s it?! I don’t know what happened during the design phase across the board, but this is such a strange occurrence this year and holding some of these mazes back.

Something I noticed is no matter what you were a fan of this year, your property was HIGHLY represented across the park in some fashion — food places, bars, and tons of merchandise. I think the only thing that didn’t get anything was Poltergeist. It truly does feel like a good time to be a fan if you’re into these properties and made me wonder what HHN would’ve been like in the past if it had the same budget catered towards the properties I personally like. The park is the most decorated I have ever seen it. In a weird way, the event feels like it is finally catering to the Halloween experience, except it’s more of an experience for…children? Everything is bright, poppy, and colorful with macabre twisted in. Is this event for kids, pre-teens, teens, college kids, or adults? It almost feels hard to say as it tries to cater to all those things at once, which we knew going in by looking at the lineup. I will say, I do miss the HHN of old that truly felt like it was almost strictly for adults. What it has turned into isn’t the worst thing ever, the vibe is electric throughout the night in all areas, but I can’t help but think what if that same vibe was distilled in a more dark event. Only time will tell what this event will evolve into, but it is really hard to see the future or the vision. The event could last like this forever, but can it maintain that energy without ever dropping too low? And would it be my favorite Halloween event still? I do have my worries and doubts, but at least for now, this year is worth visiting and we can enjoy the ride.

the event is largely great, one of the better years i can remember if you take into account the streets and atmosphere. however, they should be embarrassed by running poltergeist back out here with no noticeable improvements. this event is too expensive and far too popular for that kind of budget play.

100% agreed. Like do something about those black walls. C’mon.
