And I was thinking if the subjects posted in r/niceguys got together to write a horror franchise, it’d be Terrifier, so, wow, I get it.

I feel like Terrifier is similar to how the movie Faces of Death was viewed by teens when it first came out... it wasn't necessarily about it being good, it was more of a dare to see if you could get through it, and the shock value of seeing something forbidden. Like Mondo Cane. Whether it had redeeming qualities or not was incidental (at the time).

I have not seen any of the Terrifier films (unless you count the Dead Meat Kill Counts, haha). I don't really have any interest in brutality just for shock value at my age. However, I can see and understand how the character of Art is compelling in both visual design and in some of the crazed performance choices (particularly when he's NOT killing, and just being weird).

The franchise would be nothing without Lauren Lavera and David Howard Thornton tbh

This isn't even remotely true. It's possible to push boundaries and appeal to wide audiences; at no point have those things proved mutually exclusive. Horror movies have been appealing to wide, mainstream audiences for more than a hundred years. Universal Studios owes their entire existence to the popularity of the genre. And those movies might seem dated and old-fashioned now, but at the time? They pushed boundaries.

Here's the best way I can sum up my feelings on Terrifier (and yes, I've seen all three of them): When I was a kid in the mid-90s (like 8 or 9), I was at a sleepover with like three other boys my age and we watched the original NOES. First horror movie any of us had ever seen, and we lost our minds. After the movie, we started talking about all the other horror VHS boxes we'd seen at the rental store. None of us had actually watched those movies yet, but we were so caught up in the adrenaline from NOES that we got carried away describing them. Like someone would go "I heard in Candyman, the bad guy poisons little kids with candy." And then not to be outdone, someone else would go "I saw Hellraiser, and there's a part where the bad guy shoots nails out of his head and it kills a naked girl and there's all this blood everywhere." Each kid had to one-up the next kid, until we just straight up inventing movies that didn't even exist because we wanted to come up with the goriest thing we could think of.

That's Terrifier. There's nothing inherently original or creative about it. (And reminder, I've seen all three.) It's just a litmus test for gore hounds. And that's fine, there's obviously a place for this kind of stuff and I'm glad people enjoy it, but at the same time Terrifier fans think too highly of themselves. When something is trying so hard to be transgressive, it kinda negates the quality of actually being transgressive, and the whole thing just comes across as the invention of some dweeby kid at a sleepover trying to sound as edgy as possible.

It's like this: When I was a kid, back when I had literally only seen one horror movie, I thought the thing that made horror "horror" was extreme violence. Any concept of style, form, creativity, or narrative theme was completely unknown to me. I think Terrifier is proof that some people -- grown adults -- appear to still think this way. So the entire thing just strikes me as juvenile.

Very well said all around, and that reminds me of a comment I saw not too long ago elsewhere, where someone was excited about the film because oh, Art kills kids. Like that somehow makes it different or a cut above others. Meanwhile, kids getting killed in horror films is nothing new, not by a longshot. And there hasn't been some recent drought of it, either. When Evil Lurks immediately comes to mind, and that came out last year.

If violence to children is what someone’s looking to watch (woof there’s a lot to unpack with that one) Terrifier is far from the only film that depicts it. Megan Is Missing, Speak No Evil, even The Coffee Table, are just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

Third film of the Terrifer franchise and I've still yet to see a fan of them say anything that'd make me want to watch it. Aside from them feeling like they're legitimately coming from a place of mean spirited anger, the films just aren't good films, IMO. Gave the first two a chance just to see what the hoopula was about but I don't have any desire to keep up and muting the film's title was a wise choice to do so on Twitter.

On the other hand, The Substance. Bonkers. Over the top. Goes there, stays there for a hot second and then goes even further. Campy, crazy, out of its mind. Subperb acting, delirious soundtrack and like a demented descendant of Brian Yuzna. Don't look up a single screen grab before seeing it if you can. Only saw some of the hype before catching and it lived up to it and then some. 2024 continues to deliver the absolute goods, especially in the realm of original horror.

I hate terrifier but,
on the one hand I should be happy that a small indie horror movie made it this big to get 3 movies and to have merchandise on SPIRIT Stores. I should be happy that it was made outside of the mainstream studio and succeeded.
also 80s horror always had the slashers going after the female characters
( if you love Halloween and Friday so much why don't you like terrifier then? )

but one thing I noticed is that the violence and the kills on those movies were quick. Michael Myers took out the characters quickly. he didn't linger. he was like a Terminator, no feelings, just attack and move on. ( Jason is different, he had anger, but it was also quick, you got your gore but they moved on.)
those movies didn't have the best plots but they were more interesting.

but with terrifier it gets annoying. the clown gets annoying, the gore gets annoying. he's not as funny as they think he is.
I can understand that people are starving for a new slasher, I get that we need new blood into this genre, but he's just annoying.

also there's gonna be a Funko pop of him.
he's reached the Funko pop level of success, I'm surprised, he's fully mainstream now lol
he might actually show up at hhn or six flags now lol.

Terrifier getting a Funko doesn’t mean as much as you would think. Their Funko line lives on quantity with a twinge of obscurity to justify chasers. Ever heard of Poet Anderson? It was an animated short film in 2014. It got a Funko. Crimson Peak got a Funko. Son of Zorn got a Funko. Count Chocula. Winslow from the old cartoon CatDog…

Terrifier getting one was inevitable, simply because of the way Funko operates.

A multitude of reasons. Foremost being the Halloween and Friday franchises never felt like they were somehow backwardly trying to promote their slasher antagonists as some sort of silly scamp who is actually loveable. Outside of some lesser exceptions most slasher films (especially the franchise tentpoles) never felt like they originated from such deep rooted mean spirited-ness and those that did don't feature antagonists that are lighthearted or meant to elicit laughs from the audience. I also legitimately think classic slashers featured higher craft than the Terrifier series and I'm not knocking people's hard work but they're not as well made or inventive as other films.

If anything I'm cool with the franchise being popular because it means studios will be more likely to fund independent horror, which is never a bad thing. So long as it doesn't end up in studios thinking we need more cheap, schlocky one note gore flicks.

Agreed, that's not something you want to say you're looking forward to.

Anyways, was able to get back to checking some films out, and I finally got to seeing HOST. I'll be upfront, when this type of concept was done by Unfriended, it really didn't work for me. Watching people casually type a whole bunch of things and whatnot doesn't make for an engaging watch.

Host on the other hand, absolutely worked for me in every way Unfriended didn't. Since it's a zoom call and it's all visual instead of text, it was a lot more interesting to watch and dear lord did this film pull off way better scares. It may take a little bit to get going, but when it does, it takes off and doesn't look back, it makes great use of it's very short runtime which is thematically perfect with the trial period of Zoom.

And this is one of those films where I respect it even more after watching the behind-the-scenes stuff, this was a pretty neat film to pull off in the pandemic, from everyone doing their own makeup, rigging various effects and stunts in their homes etc. Just a great example of what a team can do with a low budget and a lot of creativity.

All in all, it was a great popcorn flick with a nice kick to it!

You can type anything into this machine and it will appear on the internet.

Anyway gonna go see Terrifier tonight and I am really excited. Cool that an unrated indie horror movie is doing better than a big budget sequel to a movie that got oscar buzz when it came out a few years ago...

The first Smile was a popular but underwhelming film. With Smile 2, director/writer Parker Finn exceeds expectations. Here, he is let loose. The filmmaking on display is often aggressive and feels immediate. The cinematography by Charlie Sarroff and editing by Elliot Greenberg is stellar and trippy, effectively bringing us into the world of the Smile Monster. The score by Cristobal Tapia de Veer can veer into delicious Synth-y territory at the best of times and is certainly worth a listen on it’s own.

Kyle Gallner returns for a killer opening sequence, after which it’s the Naomi Scott show. We could discuss some supporting players, but there’s not much point since most get minor screen time. Miles Gutierrez-Riley deserves a call-out as a friend of Skye’s. He manages to make the most out of his minimal screen time. Dylan Gelula is great and shows potential as Gemma, ex-best friend to Skye. Unfortunately, she’s literally only in three scenes. Luckily, Scott is so compelling as Skye that these small flaws are forgivable.

Naomi Scott deserves every bit of praise for her work here. Her performance is surprisingly physical. There are multiple dance sequences as she practices for shows. Scott slays her choreography in these scenes. She also proves she’s got the pipes to be a Scream Queen. Scott’s Skye Riley is given a good backstory, and we are given plenty of reasons to root for her to survive. Root for her we do, certainly more than the first film’s protagonist.

Smile 2 has an incredibly strong first act, but it loses its footing just a tiny bit during acts 2 and 3. It starts out so strong and fast, that it’s hard to maintain that momentum for a full two hours. This isn't enough to knock Smile 2 any points, but it is noticeable.

The kills and gore on display in Smile 2 easily out-do anything found in the first Smile. The high school friend’s death (Lewis, played by Lukas Gage) is easily an unforgettable highlight. There is a lot of blood and a lot of gore. There are also plenty of creepy smiling people stalking the corners of the film as well. If you came to Smile 2 looking for fun, old-fashioned, bloody, squirm-inducing horror… you’ve come to the right place.

Smile opened the doors wide for Parker Finn to really show us what he can do, and with Smile 2, he doesn’t disappoint. With this second outing, Finn puts the pedal to the metal and delivers a thrilling, thoughtful, freaky, wild, and fun film that continues the first Smile’s exploration of trauma hidden behind fake smiles. Everything here is better: the story, the score, the cinematography, the editing… It all adds up to a sequel that is infinitely better than the first film. You better believe Smile 2 is one of the best horror films of 2024. It will put a smile on your face.

4.5 STARS
