I can't believe after the Robin Williams disaster that someone would try Popeye again. LOL! I hated DM2, but loved the first one. But my son loves both, because to him its not about the story, its about the minions.

Agreed. I see Illumination/Hasbro for KidZone and Sony Animation/Hanna Barbera for Toon Lagoon

Lost Continent could go Wonka, more Potter, more Seuss - really it's up in the air

I meant you're assuming Universal is trying to match Fantasyland and go for that audience. I don't think they are.

But here's the thing, there's not enough room for Universal to add things to significantly change that view, and they know it. Universal is quite happy being the place for families with kids 8+. It's done well for them, and that's the way they're going to continue.

Also, I can safely say move on from Nickelodeon. Not gonna happen.

I just wanted to go back to this for a second, because I think this is definitely the way to go. In my opinion, babies, toddlers and young kids will probably still like and be captivated by colorful "family" properties... but most other demographics probably do not and will not give their attention to the current toddler IPs and themes found in KidZone nowadays. So, if they go away from Barney, Curious George, Fievel... and revitalize the area with something family-friendly (which I still consider to be geared for kids, but which adults can also stand or even enjoy), like animated films from DreamWorks or Illumination Entertainment, then that would give a huge boost to KidZone. So, if they get rid these outdated toddler IPs and bring on fresher, wider-appealing properties, that should still cater to the current KidZone demographic, but attract the rest of us as well. Which I'm sure is what they want.

And yes, a key thing should be not just appealing to a wider audience, but also having options for a wider audience... which means rides and attractions that more people can experience. Hopefully this could be where Universal finally introduces an omnimover type ride.

And then there's the other, more extreme, possibility... forgetting about the babies and toddlers completely in this area and just putting ANY other profitable properties here. To be honest, that would not bother me as much. I doubt that many, if any, parents of toddlers take their kids to Universal just because of what they have in KidZone. UOR could probably get much more business and success from putting anything else in here that is currently popular / wider appealing, even if it cuts off the younglings.

Don't get me wrong, I think the best option is appealing to the widest possible audience, but I don't think that segregating the Kidz to a single area of the park is the best option... I think those attractions for kids, and less-restrictive rides in general, should be sprinkled throughout ALL of the park.

(Oops! Can someone merge my posts? I didn't mean to double dip :P I figured they would be together, but I guess I took too long for the system to join 'em on its own.)

That's beside the point, but they can make space, just like they have made space in the past. Our latest example is Kang & Kodos. Remember, I'm not saying NO kid rides in KidZone, but it's just another of the many possibilities

That's exactly the point...they don't bring their kids to Universal. That's why KidZone needs an overhaul. Universal wants to change this.

Any chance of them making a new property to take over Kidzone and them marketing it as "something you can only see at Universal Studios Florida!"? Seems like it could work if marketed properly.

Do you mean an original idea or an Illumination property? If you mean the latter they have Pets coming out in 2016.

I think they'll stick to something established but recent and to my opinion i dont think it needs to be animated related.

I personally think they are in the wait and see approach with kidzone. They may have some general concepts or ideas of what they want the area to be, but I don't think they have nailed down an IP. I think they want to see what happens in the next couple years and then based on that pick an IP that fits their vision of what that area should be.

How recent is recent relatively?

Just to spitball a few ideas that I would like for fun:
Adventure Time, How to Train Your Dragon, Scooby Doo, Johnny Test

If it's not DM or minions... I'm gonna guess something DreamWorks? How to Train Your Dragon? or maybe Madagascar making its way to Orlando? I know there's that show in BGT, but maybe both can co-exist? or Kung-Fu Panda? That'd be neat. Was The Croods popular? I wouldn't say it's "established," though, so I'm counting that one out...

Scooby's not recent, rest aren't truly established.

The only recent and established animated IPs I think I'd be willing to cede are DM and Madigascar. Either of which could be a nice fit. Unless RJ is playing fast and loose with "recent" and it's TMNT or Smurfs or something.
