They look like standard brakes to me. I'm hoping there's no trick track element and the worlds first has something to do with the cars, but I'm pretty open about the whole project.

As far as I'm aware. The ride is still scheduled for a May opening with soft openings in April.

From this point onwards the ride will go up incredibly quickly. I would expect track to be nearly complete by the end of February.

Was on park yesterday and today, although you cannot get anywhere near I did see support work going in around the toilet block. The crane was working all day which was great to see on a Sunday. Managed to snag the following pics from distance......

Yet more track, is that a break run I can see?

The following set of photos were taken by a fan from TTF who managed to grab these shots of some mysterious track , is it just a brake run or maybe there is more to it. Any ideas?

Well that 'mysterious track' looks ... mysterious!

I see hydraulics and springs, could just be something to 'shake' the track section? :p I don't know lol

Looks like it might be a station section. I see Hall effect sensors, pneumatic (not hydraulic) cylinders, accumulation tanks and springs. Appears a little over complicated to be a regular brake run IMO.

Looking at this photo, I would say the station is done, track wise any way.

Could it be for a launch? Also the track was sectioned off by Alton Towers the day after the photos appeared. Thanks for the reply Bob I got lots to go off and learn about now

On a side note, how any hours of testing does a new coaster need before public can ride?

More supports going in

BDkSIhzCEAA0rvC.png:large

The above support shows an inversion that isn't in the the plans, further more it has cone to light that the original plans have changed, Alton Towers have admitted this. Further supports have shown other inversions that were not on the original plans. I have a suspicion that this coaster may well hold the inversion record when complete, just a hunch on my part, watch this space to see if I'm right.

Supports and track

In other news John Wardley designer of the Smiler has given an interview on radio. A candid interview gives some hints as to what we will expect from The Smiler, due to open in May. It is a fascinating interview and it can be found here http://www59.zippyshare.com/v/58060077/file.html
Have a listen, the ride truly sounds awesome.

Sample of the interview, coutesy of TTF.

John Wardley, Ride Designer

If you think Nemesis is big this is about twice the size of Nemesis. But the unique thing about it is, whereas rollercoasters in the past have just played around with your body, this ‘marmalises’ you and it plays around with your mind and there are five mind manipulating elements that you experience on the ride"

What we have managed to do is pack more track per metre of space in this ride than any other rollercoaster in the world. it takes you up two different lifts, one is vertical, you've got 30m drop, all sorts of inversions, but on top of that various special effects that actually disorientate you so it’s a mental experience as well as a physical experience.

Maybe more clues can be found in this video too. It is a preview of the up and coming The Smiler The Game app, looks fun.

So quite a bit going on from vertical construction, finally, marketing is starting to hot up again and a great looking app soon to be launched.

I am back on park this weekend so hopefully I will get a closer look or at least view some track going up.

One last little tid bit, here is a pic without the blackout.

In front of the station is the shop, the track leaves the station and drops down and to the left and under the shop into a barrel roll and out towards the straight.
To me it doesn't look like that straight will marry up with the tack coming from under the shop. Trick track maybe?

The shop is rumoured to have a glass floor to view the train whizzing past below, does that steel work support the rumour?

So lots to discuss, what do you all think of John Wardley final master piece before he retires?

Edit. The track from under the shop does marry up, new photos prove this fact.

Another aerial update, things are really starting to move along now.

Overview of the site, notice new track on the left.

1.jpg

Better view of the new track and supports. Looks like they still have plenty of concrete to pour.

4.jpg

Staffordshire Knot, station and shop. Notice track coming out of the station and dropping under the shop, maybe the shops glass floor rumour is true.

5.jpg

Under the concrete pourers arm what looks like a silo has been installed with pipework to it. Could this be for a water or fire effect? It will eventually be under or near the large spider theming. surly being placed there it is not for sewage?

6.jpg

Another overview of the site, interestingly there doesnt seem to be any footers down the left hand side where the track will reappear behind the station.

7.jpg

Close up of the toilet block, now covered by track and supports. Also notice another silo up in the top left hand corner, by the shed. This is the same as the one I mentioned earlier.

8.jpg

Toilet block from another angle, note the inversions going in here.

9.jpg

And another angle.

10.jpg

Great view of the stations steel, the track under the shop is clearer here you can even make out a barrel roll/corscrew down there.

11.jpg

These are the plans for the spider theming I mentioned earlier.

From RCT3Bross on TTF.

The world beating has to be inversions, I can count 6 or 7 in today's update alone, and we still have more than half a coaster to go up. Alton have certainly kept they're cards close to they're chest, but I believe we are looking at 14 or 15 inversions, I could well be wrong as it is pure speculation at this point but hey pictures don't lie and there are certainly more thean 8 as previously stated by AT. If I am correct China is gonna be really :censored: off if AT come along a trump there attempt at the record :p

We still have 5 mind manipulating elements to work out and a secret element, this is building up to be one awesome coaster which I can't wait to take a spin on.

The Smiler The game video

The game is now out and is available on IOS and Android. It is actually quite a fun game and gives a great insight into the actual ride.

Alton Towers

THE GAME

Take control of The Smiler ride cars and the minds of the rollercoaster riders.
Steer a perfect line through the inversions of the ride.
Take advantage of the boost to maximise your scoring potential.
Upgrade the rollercoaster step by step by unlocking loops and psychological effects.

Check it out on the link below.

Does the game help you figure out how many inversions there are, or what those 5 mindbending effects that were mentioned are?

Alot of inversions are in the game after unlocking, but not all. I think we are looking a world beating 15 inversions in total.

The legs of the spider hold a different effect, these are unlockable in the game.

Another update.

Firstly here is some art work of the marmaliser (spider theming element)

article-0-185ADD1A000005DC-838_634x474.jpg

This was found in an article in the Daily Mail, full article can be read here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2286085/Alton-Towers-The-Smiler-Psychologists-set-unveil-terrifying-roller-coaster-ever.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Secondly Towerstimes.com have been in the skies again so here are the latest aerial shots.

Overview of the site. Nice shiny Oblivion sporting her new paint job.

1.jpg

Top end of the site, no more track up since last update but ground works about done.

2.jpg

Bottom end of site, final brake run is in and work continues on the shop and station.
