Yeah, I have been wondering what that would look like. The only way I see it working is 1) he is running beside us or 2) we are facing backwards, backing up, with him running at us.

I'm not sure how much I buy him running. He'll be there...but that sounds a bit exaggerated. We'll see

The illusion of running can be achieved with the right hydraulics..not free running

I don't think that it would be free running. It's more likely that it will have an arm on it's other side if it is running beside you or arm from the ground if behind you. Also, depending on how long this scene is it may be on its own track follows you then loops backstage to its start. Sorta like how the pontoon system for rhino rally used to work. This would mean multiple kong animatronics for the scene.

There's no chance in hell we get a running Kong, simulated or otherwise. An active, impressive Kong AA? Sure. Running? No way.

Yeah, I remember being blown away by that entire movie when I first watched it in theaters in 1993. I had no concept of CGI at the time, so I was wondering the entire time how they created the special effects.
