Guys, I actually tend to side with @epcyclopedia on this one. Just because he's got critiques doesn't mean he hate the parks.

Everybody critiques parks. But not to the extent where there doesn't appear to be any enjoyment. It's incessant.

I'd expect someone who had experience in the field to appreciate the design, work and implementation that goes into theme park projects, and offer feedback other than constant criticism...of everything,

No you couldn't.

We keep echoing this world class moniker for UO and Disney, but aren't allowed to make valid observations when clearly they're justified? Give me a break - the guy is totally on point in his assessment.

And this project doesn't appear to be a world class theme park area? Seriously? Like...explain that...who else is building things on the scale of Uni and Disney?

Show us the bioluminescents that make the World of Pandora a "must see" night time experience (as it's being advertised... by the way). Otherwise, I'd expect Universal to steal the show this summer with the nightly eruption at Volcano Bay.

Well I've just sent the 5 people I'm off to Florida with in a few weeks the pictures above, and the consensus is it very much is a must see...whatever the marketing blurb about bioluminescence says.

And if we want to stick to purely fabricated items... nothing really alive..

Bioluminescent things falls into certain light wavelength categories. The colors being used in Pandora don't reflect that - while the film generally did.

My $0.02 on the preview image is the forest looks more like it's lit with lights than bioluminescence. Maybe it's a bad location. Maybe it looks better in person. Considering Disneys patents on projection mapping on plants and actual bioluminescent plants I did expect more from what the images are showing.

They can't do projection mapping on real, swaying plants. I mean, they can, but it wouldn't really work. Disney is #1 with lighting and projections because of there patents so I'm sure it will look even better in person. Btw, the "floating mountains" are painted with a kind of florescent paint that really makes them pop.

I think it's also cool how there are signs of past conflicts through out the land. The visitpandora page shared a picture with what looks like a weathered tractor.

I just can't help but to laugh at some comments that are made....first it was oh those mountains aren't really floating! Of course they aren't! The mountains are a fantastic feat of Engineering....and now it's those plants aren't really bioluminescent! Of course they aren't! The best way for then to be able to control the effects in these plants they need to be artificial....in here there are plants from literally every corner of the world, but when it comes to the effects plants, the best way to achieve not only the effect, but to create the alien landscape, artificial is the best way to go.

I think the criticism is the illusion being less effective.
Personally I think it all looks wicked cool! But I understand that some are underwhelmed by the mountains, but the plants seem pretty awesome to me. I don't want to denigrate anyone's opinion however, because part of the point of the board is that we don't all think the same way.

On fake plants..

The problem isn't that they'r fake - it's that you can immediately tell at a glance that they're fake. Heck, several don't even look like they're made of the same general material as plant-based matter.. moreso concrete and plastic.

They can be fake. They shouldn't look fake.

It's not as bad as the ET ride, but it's pushing it - and having "real" plants right there to compare to makes them look even worse.

And really, how have we not advanced that much in fake glowing plant technology since ET opened?

Also, within Disney's own research... they researched how to fabricate fake plants that moved with the wind and water effects using specialized fibers in the trunks and other support structures.

This was in 1982 for Universe of Energy's diorama. Yet here we are in 2017 and those fake plants look hard as rocks and immobile.

I can't. Lmaooo. I didn't even know those red plants were "bioluminescent" until these recent night time shots. For me, the fact that they look amazing during the day, and stunning at night is remarkable. Most people won't even know those plants will be glowing like that at night. They will visit the land in the morning and come back at night and be shocked.

An awful lot of weird negativity in here.

I think the nighttime pictures look pretty stunning, and very much in line with what a person should have been realistically expecting for a theme park land.

It's not weird negativity, it's his very valid and well thought out observations. You don't get the luxury of calling people negative simply because you disagree with their opinions.

And to be quite honest with you, some of you would learn a lot if you actually listen to what he's saying. @epcyclopedia, @Teebin, and @Andy are easily the most valuable members of this forum... and I guarantee you his criticism isn't just something being spewed on a whim. He's absolutely right when he says that fake plants go against the true spirit of Animal Kingdom, when the resources available to do it in a true form are sitting right in front of them.

There is no way currently to get plants to glow like the way they do in the film naturally and if there was, it'll be so much up keep. It'll be like flower and garden year round. Second, they can't plant plants that contain possibility harmful chemicals. There are rules set by the Department of Agriculture. Disney wanted to bring in plants/tall grasses from Africa for their safari and they were not allowed because of the possibility of them becoming invasive. Your argument: Fake plants go against the true spirit of Disney.....a fake Everest mountain. The freaking icon of the park is a large fake tree. That argument is nonsense. If the fake plants looked like E.T, I would agree 100% but many of these fake plants have parts where they sway with the wind and look organic.

Where have you seen this stuff swaying...?

And ya'll don't seriously see how much of it looks curiously like ET's set dressing?

The mushroom "can often be observed on moonless nights in autumn". In other words, pitch black. And that mushroom is probably like an inch tall.

"In recent years, a number of scientists have had success with transferring the genetic material responsible for bioluminescence into plants that don’t normally glow in the dark."
