The big issue with Shrek is that there's nothing remotely unique or innovative about it. After Universal used 3D in a way never imagined with Spider-Man, it was a pretty big step backwards for them to do a standard gimmicky 3D show after that. What really sours me towards the attraction is the fact that you're not even a part of the experience at all. Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and whatnot never interact with you in any way. You're literally just watching it all happen.
When I go to a park like Universal, I want to be IN the experience. I want to follow in the footsteps of the characters that we saw on the big-screen and go on an unforgettable adventure. With Shrek 4-D, none of that happens. It's just a little movie you watch, and you're done.
There's also the extra fact that Shrek 4-D is available on DVD and has been released in other ways as well. Plus, with movie theaters getting 3D and some theaters getting those D-Box motion seats, it makes Shrek 4-D even less unique as a theme park experience.
And the tragic thing is, Shrek had so much potential as a property that it kills me to see it wasted so horribly. What they should've done with it is make it a dark ride that could parody the Fantasyland dark rides while still holding its own. That would have made a great attraction that could've held up for a long time.
But nope, they just had to go with the cheap 3D show route. Pity.
(Oh yeah, on top of it all, it replaced a great show like Hitchcock, which only makes me angrier at the attraction.)
