Universal's New Park/Site B Blue Sky Thread

Everyone is banking on IPs that Univerasal already owns, but what are some of the ones they don’t that are “available”?

I know lord on the rings was always considered a big property , but I’ve heard the family isn’t interested.

Star Trek seems to be a rather boring idea to me, but maybe it could work?

I feel like a DC land could work, but I think Six Flags has that license?

Having a hard time thinking of anything big that hasn’t been represented in a theme park already.

So I’ve heard all the rumored lands, or “worlds” and the only one I’m really excited about is Nintendo. It also seems like the park would have a lot of younger kid friendly IPs. Which would be a big change from the other UOR parks. The classic monster world seems like a great idea, but
I’m not sure the public would really be into it. Fantastic Beasts has also been a bit of a let down, compared to Potter’s success.

I don’t know. I’m sure it will be great, but the rumored worlds aren’t wowing me at this point .

I sort of agree with you. I have no doubt that Universal can/will create great rides and attractions in their new park.....but outside of Nintendo everything feels stale already. I feel that Monsters would fit in better at IOA. Would love to see Monsters replace Toon Lagoon. Re-theme Popeye & bulldoze Dudley Do-Right.....replacing it with Monster castle dark ride.

I know that it is no longer the thing to do.....but I would like to see more generic themed lands containing multiple IPs related to generic theme. Like Old Europe, Wild West, Colonial America, Sci-Fi, etc.

Anyway, I think part of my problem is that I have no emotion nor nostalgia to any of the Dreamworks or Imiation properties. In general I dislike them. I could see those properties appeal to a younger demographic though. I’m probably just too old.

Oh I know that I described Magic Kingdom.

No modern day CEO will put their rep (or corporate profit!) on the line to come up with original ideas for theme parks. Unfortunate. I do find it ironic that Disney is making movies based on ORIGINAL theme park rides. Good thing that Disney has been able to buy their success (Lucas, Marvel) because they have been severely lacking original ideas for a couple of decades.

I do find it ironic that Disney is making movies based on ORIGINAL theme park rides. Good thing that Disney has been able to buy their success (Lucas, Marvel) because they have been severely lacking original ideas for a couple of decades.

Making movies out of original rides (like the upcoming Jungle Cruise movie and of course all the ones in the past) is just smart business. Jungle Cruise has the name recognition and the nostalgia behind the ride, and much like Pirates, it's already proven itself as a lasting IP even before it was turned into a movie. If you can translate that into a successful movie, then they're set. It's very much the reverse way of doing things, but Disney will do anything to capitalize on their product.

I understand that and I'm not against making movies based on original rides & attractions. That will come to an end though because Disney is no longer building original rides & attractions. Why would Iger care though....he will be long gone.

Back to Universal.....I really hope that they have the guts to do something original in their new park. They did with Volcano Bay and it paid off big time.

That’s not entirely fair, while the North American parks have been lacking. The over seas parks have seen some original rides like Mystic Manor.

Everest, mission space, Soarin are all “original” ideas.

The still do have a bunch of originals that could be turned into movies though. Everest, Haunted Mansion (reboot), Big Thunder, Mission: Space, Soarin, etc. Hell, one of the animators for Cranium Command is the the one who came up with the idea for Inside Out.

The key is how it's put together. A great ride is a great ride regardless of the IP. Whereas a poor attraction is still a poor attraction, regardless of the IP.

Agreed. I can easily point at F&F and the Waterworld show as examples of what a good design team can do versus the IP's popularity. (Throwing Waterworld into the ring because it's too early to figure out which franchises haven't done all that well.)

I'd worry that putting in a DC land would cause issues with the already complicated Marvel contract.

I like the idea of generic themes linking multiple rides together - not unlike the pot brewing the Classic Monsters land. I'm sure DreamWorks would see a similar setup. If multiple IPs can line up nicely, it's the easy thing to do.

Wait...what IPs are "tired" in the rumored lineup? You don't have to like them, but Nintendo and Classic Monsters have never been done, DreamWorks has never been done in Orlando, and Fantastic Beasts...okay that one is a little tired but Potter rides are always great.

I agree. As much as I don’t like FB coming to the park, JK/WB overlooking the project gives me hope it’ll be done top notch. And I know Shrek, KFP and HTTYD as well as Trolls could all make a great DreamWorks land. Monsters I’m most skeptical about, but it could be really cool and give UC a lot of creative freedom too.

Yeah none of the rumored IPs are tired. Nintendo will be the only real land you can get anywhere else in America.

SNW was originally 9 acres, and the land won't be expanded that much. I'm thinking 12 acres at maximum. That's smaller than SWGE and Hogsmeade. I figured that Monsters would be around SWGE size, if not Hogsmeade.
