Tickets for Chris Rock's first public performance on his tour soared after the incident. His comment on it: "I’m still processing what happened."

This is not the only take. You've posted some of this stuff multiple times now and i'm not black, no. But what Chris Rock said was not "violent". If he knew about her alopecia, it surely was distasteful and they are both in the wrong, but I simply don't consider it violent, especially if he DIDN'T know about her alopecia.

I get being violent with words is wrong (if you want to say that's what he was), but that STILL doesn't justify a physically violent response.

I will continue to say that Rock's joke was tame and not even funny. A real Chris Rock joke is the joke he used Jada in when he hosted in 2016, saying “Jada said she’s not coming, protest. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s going to boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!” That's the type of comedy Chris Rock has been known for his whole career and to me, people getting their panties in a knot over a tame, if slightly distasteful joke is crazy.

If Chris was going to get slapped every time he made a joke like that throughout his career, he'd be getting slapped all the time. This years Oscars was filled with insult comedy from all hosts and Chris Rock was likely brought on to do the same. The Aaron Sorkin joke, the Adam McKay joke, the open marriage joke, Kirsten Dunst seat filler joke, The Last Duel joke, The Penelope Cruz-Javier Bardem joke, Wanda Sykes had some good lines, etc.

I also just kinda think this is a microcosm of where we've stooped to as a country. Chris Rock said something that made Jada upset and Will Smith slaps him. No one talks anything out anymore, it's just straight to the extremes. Also, in his acceptance speech, Will was talking crazy, but as a country, we are so used to people talking crazy now that it doesn't even phase anyone anymore, it's just become normalized.

There's so many people that deserve individual apologies because their wins will never be remembered or the hosts won't be remembered. Questlove, Jessica Chastain, Jane Campion, Ariana Debose, Troy Kotsur, CODA and Dune's big night. Lastly, Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, and Amy Schumer. They didn't host that show for the first time the other night, they've been prepping for it.

I hope Will gets better, too. Ever since the entanglement thing came out, he's had nothing but people dunking on him and I think he simply snapped in this moment. That still doesn't make what he did right though and he honestly owes himself an apology as he ruined his own biggest night by snapping.

Sounds like Chris Rock has it out for Jada. Weird. Wonder why Will Smith would take umbrage with a dude making fun of his wife multiple times in front of a national audience.

I get that.

I feel for Will for what he's been through these past few years and I do think the WHY for what he did this for in his mind (protecting his wife) is admirable in its own way, however, the WHAT actually isn't necessarily wrong (the what being a smack). What is wrong is the WHERE. Just because he was protecting his wife doesn't make the slap right in that moment. As i've said I think it would've been best to take it backstage and maybe still throw punches, but at least both people have a shot against each other rather than making a scene on stage and honestly, undermining his biggest achievement of his career.

Chris Rock obviously has culpability too, that's where the WHO and the WHEN comes in. Deciding to go after Jada (the who) for a second time at the Oscars, with most confident Will would win Best Actor (the when) out of everyone in attendance was just a poor choice. Also, it was just a bad joke as i've said many times. I have no problem with the joke if he didn't know she had alopecia, but the reason it was bad is because the gist of the joke is "you so bald, you should star in GI Jane 2".

As you have said before and I concur with, this is a nuanced conversation and quite frankly i'm kinda sick of it now and may just bow out from this thread until we actually hear anything new from The Academy because there's nothing else that can be said at this point. I think i've changed certain opinions on this what seems like a million times since Sunday and it's now Friday.

There really is no clear stance that is the "correct one". There's many different things that were done that I agree with and disagree with from both parties AND the Academy as well. They both can be right on certain things, but what transpired was very unfortunate.

I keep posting the same things multiple times (just like you keep posting your opinion multiple times) because people keep replying to me. I won’t have to repeat my stance if people stop replying to me.

The more that keep coming out over their history the more and more it looks like Chris Rock was probably a guy Jada said no to and he still hasn’t gotten over it. So, my opinion stays unchanged—it wasn’t that bad, not a big deal, and the (honestly, mostly white) people that are *still* beside themselves over this look ridiculous.

People are replying because each of your posts just seem to be finding another way to completely dismiss violence as nothing or to somehow suggest its justified based on Chris' actions.
I'll admit im finding this hard so i'll make this my last post on the matter.
At least this thread has stayed civil so that's something, have a good weekend everyone.

Honestly, it shouldn't surprise me as many people will defend violence over a joke. I think its funny how this is ok because Chris is a man, but let pretend a woman made that joke would you be fine with Will Smith Smacking a woman?

And here's the major shoe to drop. My guess is he'll reapply in a few years. This is probably best for everyone since the story in the press will finally end and it gets out of the news.

And the saga is finally over. He is still eligible for Oscars in that time, he just cannot attend.

Well, thats BS

The ban makes sense but if he is unwilling to be able to act like a person at events, then I rather him not win awards. A slap on the wrist for slapping someone in the face

I mentioned this over in the Disney+ thread and Im pretty surprised, not only because DWTS still pulls pretty decent ratings still, but this seems more like a move that I’d expect for it to be shifting to Hulu, rather than Disney+.

I kinda expect within a few years Hulu will be nothing but a Live TV service at the most, and with those move, Inow think it’s possible the Live TV service moves to Disney+.

So I wanted to make a quick post about streaming content out right now across multiple services. Truly though, I wanted to shine a light on Apple TV+ and HBO Max, who I feel are the two best streamers of quality original content and for some reason, at only $4.99/month, Apple TV+ gets overlooked all the time despite putting out almost nothing but the highest quality content (except for that Jason Mamoa show).

Ted Lasso is their star and CODA brought them a Best Picture Oscar, but shows they've released just this year like The After Party, Severance, WeCrashed, and even The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey have been great.

Similarly for HBO Max, 2022 has seen Peacemaker, Raised By Wolves 2, Our Flag Means Death, Tokyo Vice, Minx, Winning Time, The Flight Attendant (S2), and Barry (S3) premiers this weekend with Hacks (S2) and Made For Love (S2) debuting next month. In that time The Batman has also premiered.

For the price that these services charge, they consistently deliver for the consumer for the price they are paying and then some. None of the other service can compare, even Netflix. Sure, Netflix has good content every now and then, but you have to shuffle through so much poop to get to the gold that it's not worth it. With HBO Max and Apple TV+, it feels like there's a certain quality guarantee customers are getting. It's more quality over quantity when it comes to these services (although HBO Max does have a large quantity, too, and it's all amazing).

Yeah I canceled Netflix. The price is ridiculous for low tier stuff. I would try to find things to watch and just end up not seeing anything.

I can't believe we could be seeing the beginning of the end for Netflix....so so many bad movies (not keeping around enough shows for season 2-3, spending more on shows then most other App based shows, adding a new level that will have commercials and raising prices)
I just hope Cobra Kai can finish before this thing all ends

Netflix isn't going to go away. It's about finding ways to makes more money. They have said they estimate 100 million people are sharing passwords. They already have a solution for that. That extra person who is "sharing" (stealing) from outside of the household will have the option to pay $3 extra to keep their account.

They will also be introducing an ad-supported version.

Pair all of that with Netflix animation closing and scaling back the amount of money they spend on content in general and its a much better model for Netflix going forward. I think like 5-10 years down the line, the only streaming services that will actually make it are HBO Max, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, and Prime Video and i'm expecting the most popular service to be HBO Max with Netflix falling far back in popularity.

HBO Max has some way to go globally. Its currently very US centric and there are a lot of overseas contracts which have many many years to run.

Netflix definitely is going for quantity over quality. I'm actually cancelling my subscription this month, it just isn't worth it anymore. I already cancelled Prime Video, HBO Max feels like a natural fit for me personally. Apple TV has been high quality but just no where near enough content.

To me, Apple TV is kinda like if Netflix had a filter option for only their higher end shows. The other thing going for it it it's not the main source of revenue for the business. It's actually probably one of the smallest sources. So unlike Netflix where the entire business is streaming, Apple can handle a bad quarter on the streaming side just fine because the rest of the company is thriving.

What i'd like ideally is for Apple to buy Netflix once it starts to sink even further and then they can merge Apple TV+ with Netflix, but get rid of Apple TV branding since Netflix is more well known. It would give Apple a huge streaming library and then they could change Netflix's content strategy to be more like how they ran Apple TV where it was more quality over quantity.

Sooner or later, consolidation is bound to start. Netflix is probably in the best position to make a mutually beneficial merger with, say, a Peacock or a Paramount+ (or both). They have the biggest built-in audiece and the name, they just need new content at an affordable price.

Netflix and Apple merge, is my bet.

Paramount and NBC merging services is a good idea too.
