Sooner or later, consolidation is bound to start. Netflix is probably in the best position to make a mutually beneficial merger with, say, a Peacock or a Paramount+ (or both). They have the biggest built-in audiece and the name, they just need new content at an affordable price.

Easier said then done, especially when you don't have IP like Disney or WB and refuse to support your films so that they become enduring franchises. I won't go so far as to say that Netflix is at a higher disadvantage than either of the P's, but Paramount and Peacock benefit from being part of conglomerates with diversified revenue streams, real FCF, and actual time-tested IP whereas Netflix relies solely on subscriptions and has struggled to build enduring franchises outside of a handful of (admittedly big) tentpole shows. I've heard it suggested that Netflix is now an acquisition target by a tech company like Amazon or Apple, and while a deal from one of those two would certainly get a very close look by the government, it underscores the fact that Netflix is in a more vulnerable position than their 200m+ subscribers suggest

All the more reason for a merger. All of these media companies are leveraging so much of their assets into streaming without the institutional knowledge of that business that a Netflix or HBO has. Not to mention, all the financial resources in the world can’t get you quality IP—do you see Saved by the Bell or Halo moving the needle like Tiger King, Stranger Things, Squid Game, etc.?

If I’m anyone outside of HBO Max, Disney+, or Prime, I’m taking a serious look at Netflix right now and throwing all of the money that WOULD have gone into their sheer valuation into a hefty goodwill fee to use their name and originals.

New Disney Film Slate for 2022-23.

When the hell did a new Haunted Mansion film get green lit?

Three Fox titles and two Searchlight ones. Makes me sad to see.

Surprised Empire of Light hasn't been dated. Pretty much leaves Banshees as Searchlight's main push for the Oscars.

Amsterdam is going to be Disney's big Oscar movie as well. It's a David O. Russell ensemble movie with an all-star cast. I'm hearing great things about it coming out of the Disney CinemaCon panel today. Banshee should be good too and there's a chance for The Menu as well as Anya Taylor-Joy will have most of the screen time in that movie.

Disney has been putting a lot of Fox and Searchlight movies on Hulu instead of in theaters, so that kind of clears up the schedule a lot. Even the new Predator movie is stupidly going to Hulu instead of going to theaters. Sure, it'll help streaming, but at the expense of making any money off of the movie instead of just dropping it on streaming after 45 days.

Also of note, Avatar has been Remastered and is being re-released in September and supposedly the 3D for the trailer that was shown today was mind blowing. What they showed of Lightyear was apparently crazy good too (they showed first 30 mins).

Neither has Taika's film, Next Goal Wins, which finished production two years ago, nor has that mystery movie with Saorise Ronan.

I can almost guarantee that Taika's movie will be a straight to Hulu movie as it has never seemed like the premise of a movie that will be worth the marketing push. They'll probably release it in select theaters (if only at the Disney-owned El Capitan Theater) for around a week so that it can be considered for Oscars and call it a day. Sports movies do really well on streaming, but not so much in theaters anymore.

See How They Run, which is the Saorise Ronan film, is supposed to be a 2022 film but it wasn't on Disney's theatrical release schedule. It's a murder mystery film very much like Amsterdam (only Amsterdam is set in the 1930's and this film is set in London in the 1950's) so maybe they are going to hold on to See How They Run until the late 2023 so as to not put two films out that on the surface will seem so similar to each other (and from the same studio).

Haunted Mansion (2023)

Not only is Guilleremo Del Toro NOT involved, but they're going the comedy route again. She has done stuff with Parks & Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Spy, The Heat and Ghostbustbers (2016). A Mixed bag to say the least, but none of it makes me excited for this project.
forums.insideuniversal.net forums.insideuniversal.net

I'll be honest: I completely forgot about it too until a few days ago.

I just wish someone like Sam Raimi was directing the movie. I don’t want another full on (probably bad) comedy when someone like Raimi would be good at doing some comedy, but some cool creepy stuff, too.

Based on where it is on that timeline, it's just passed The Marvels which is February, but before GotG 3, so I expect about March 2023? That means we should start seeing press around when Strange World is coming out, which is probably the target demo that they would want to debut a trailer.

EDIT: Just looked, and it's scheduled for March 10, 2023.

Justin Simien (the director) did a horror film (Bad Hair) for Disney prior to getting the Haunted Mansion. Also dude doesn't do straight comedies....he does satire based films.

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and have some cautious optimism for now. At the very least I like the cast.

Danny Deveto is in HM...nice

They should really make a live action Hercules so he can still "play" Phil. (The character will be CGI, I just want his voice)

And people wondered why comedians have safety/security concerns. It's not like this was a small comedy club either where it was an intimate setting, this was at The Hollywood Bowl.

I hope this is a one and done

But yeah Will Smith is a POS for what he did, and now people think its fine to just assault people making jokes

Chris Rock did come on stage after this and made a good joke about it

Let's not act like Dave Chappelle has a history of not pissing people off....this was probably premeditated.

Since when does pissing people off through your stand-up routines make it ok to premeditate violence with a knife and a replica handgun? The guy is lucky the LAPD didn't shoot him.
