Evil Dead is such a weird Ship of Theseus property. Army of Darkness suggest Ash and its goofy humor are the draw, not the Cabin in the Woods/Deadite horror, but the remake does a 180 and centers the gore and horror in the woods, removing Ash entirely. Ash vs. Evil Dead tries to reconcile by going back to an Evil Dead 2 tone of humor and horror, but now Evil Dead Rises seems to be removing Ash, removing the cabin setting, and maybe the humor again? Considering there's not even a trailer yet, I'm not surprised people are having a tough time wrapping their heads around Evil Dead Rises, its not clear what exactly makes it Evil Dead yet.
I'm curious to see how it turns out and don't mind it coming, but it's extremely funny there will have been three (3.5 if you count Silver Screams) Evil Dead houses at the event after this year and none of them are just an The Evil Dead/Evil Dead 2 adaption, which is what I imagine most fans want.
Overall I'm getting HHN27 vibes from the lineup, one real headliner and a grabbag of IPs that are fine, but pretty uninspiring (funny both years may have a Blumhouse and Evil Dead house as well!). Hoping either their execution surprises, or this opens the door for some of the originals to completely steal the show again the way Scarecrow did in 2017.
