I'm really hesitant about this. Let's be blunt: Nintendo games are fun to play, but their stories usually suck. They can build worlds, but the stories aren't even remotely innovative. Regardless, I don't think Nintendo has enough movie-making talent in-house to make this happen.

In regards to disney/nintendo relationship, I've never heard anything to suggest they are at odds with each other (not saying that it's not true - just that I haven't heard that to be the case, I've heard the opposite). There was a rumor swirling around last year that Nintendo and Disney were negotiating a deal for movies, but then that fell quiet. Then just back in February there was apparently a powerpoint slide going around from a research investigation on behalf of Hasbro to get an idea of what Mattel has been up to. While the PowerPoint focused mostly on toys, apparently one of the slides mentioned that Disney and Nintendo were coming together to create movies - whether that means movies that exclusively feature Nintendo characters or just something like Wreck-it Ralph is beyond me. Not that you can put that much stock into that, I have yet to find the actual slide, so could just be a fake rumor, but now that Nintendo is making noise and putting it out there that they will be making movies I could see this being true. The director of Wreck-it Ralph also recently stated that he wanted Mario in the original, but Nintendo didn't allow it, but now that they have a better relationship it is possible that Mario could be in Wreck-it Ralph 2.

As far as Nintendo movies in general, I really hope Nintendo aims high. Hopefully they are looking at Pixar/Dreamworks level of quality (Pixar is probably in a league of their own but you should get the point), and not what has been done for Pokemon. here is the translated interview for anyone who wants to read (from a popular gaming forum)

I'm pretty sure those Disney/Nintendo rumors are just that... Rumors. That same time period you say those rumors were going on is the exact same time period that Universal was courting and finalizing the theme park deal with Nintendo. It makes almost zero sense for Nintendo to to split their IP's film and theme park rights between two companies in both the theme park and movie buisness. That time was also a time of SO many debunked rumors surrounding Nintendo... Take the Netflix Zelda show for instance.

As for Nintendo not being happy with Disney about Wreck It Ralph, it's not the first time I've heard this. From what I understand, it was inclusion in the film was smaller than promised and involved many other non Nintendo IP's that arguably had a larger presence. However, that's all hearsay and have only read that on different forums, so it likely could be as false as most other rumors lol

Who did The Lego Movie? I would think that would be a good studio for Nintendo to license film rights out to.

Regarding all the talk of VR and AR and whatever kind of R you want to use, I DESPERATELY hope that Universal and Nintendo don't bend over backwards trying to make Nintendoland as "video gamey" as possible. I know that sounds nuts, but trying to be too "video gamey" is exactly why video game movies are more than often TERRIBLE.

Just make a good ride. If that involves some interactivity, fine. But adding a VR headset or AR (which is still extremely limited) just reeks of trying too hard to me.

I would completely agree with you but from what I have been "informed" they could dump any high tech devices and it would still be fun and very good in this case.

I don't doubt it, and the concepts as I understand them all sound great. Just hoping they don't waste too much time on the virtual bells and whistles

The studio who did the Lego movie was Warner Bros...who are already having problems with DC. I would say yes for Chris Miller and Phil Lord who wrote the story and directed The Lego Movie except I think they are burnt out based on the television shows they are producing for FOX (Making history, Son of Zorn) not looking that great or funny at all.

If anyone should direct a Nintendo film, I would say Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Yea, I would very much disagree about Miller and Lord being burnt out.

Personally; I am just hoping that it would be Zelda that Nintendo would go for its first full-length film. It has a lot of ways that you can make it work greatly and much more than what Mario could (atleast, in my eyes).

Don't just judge them by south park....Book of Mormon was amazing.

If its a live action Zelda film, I want Aaron Sorkin to write the script with the Nintendo team and have it directed by Drew Goddard.

Parker and Stone are great, but they don't fit a Nintendo movie. At all

Yea. These movies need a sense of reverence, something Parker and Stone don't really have

Okay I will agree with that. However, I fear most other directors will take the film way too seriously and lose all the fun or go totally left field (aka Phil Lord and Chris Millier with Cloudy and 21 Jump street) from what the originals was actually about.

I'd argue that they did extremely well for taking a different angle on something like 21 Jump Street. As for Cloudy; I don't follow what you mean by that.

How the heck do you take a show that was made to teach kids morals and battle social issues and then cheapen its value by making it a R rated comedy with no real lessons to be learned from. They just took the name and premise and made it a comedy. As for cloudy, its was based off a kids book which is completely different from the film shown actually besides food falling from the sky; the book and movie have no similarities at all.

That all depends on what you seek in a film like 21 Jump Street or Cloudy.
