Is anyone really surprised? Don't you hear this kind of murmuring about every project James Cameron is involved in?

I think they might hire some of the same people, after retirement, that the US Pentagon uses for awarding contracts. $50,000 for a toilet seat compares favorably with X dollars (no limit) for a bush that glows when you walk past it.

Yes, I've been following that. Shanghai is going to end up being a money pit like Paris Disney. And Disney won't even have control of the park. And then there's a mysterious $800 million payment that Disney made and isn't even in those budget figures. China is a corrupt nation. Anything that happens there is tenuous and fraught with potential danger & pitfalls.

To be fair, none of this is proven yet.

And it never will be... unless you can get your hands on both the original budget and the final expenditure. ;)

My question is even if they go over budget, is it going to affect the overall quality of the land or no?

Not at all. It should look just as they intended. Just to be clear, I am only commenting on Disney Imagineering's convoluted bureaucracy, ineptitude and lack of discipline.

Historically, Universal could never afford to make such mistakes and continues this discipline to this day. They are tight as the bark on a tree and never try to reinvent the wheel.

Well, WDI has grown so large the politics of it have just become stupid.

But at this point, as long as the overall quality is at a high level and the rides aren't affected in a negative way, then i'm not going to complain too much. I just want a great land, and sure it'd be great if they could do it without spending ridiculous amount of money, but at the end of the day, i'm going there for the overall quality of what has been built.

Mice Chat had a good article a couple of years ago by a former Imagineer. They used the example of Disney operations wanting a simple small sign that they could have bought for around $10, but they had to go through Imagineering and they charged an atrocious amount. That's what escalates costs. You're paying for a large department and staff, probably many who aren't doing anything substantial at times, benefits and all that need to greatly overcharge to meet their own budget. Pure bureaucracy at its worst.

We've always known the budget was going to be $500M from just about day 1 though. Lee and Martin over at Magic were all over that.

How much did Diagon cost again? I mean, the Rock Work looks like it's gonna be pretty damn expensive, but still.

Another thing... I remember hearing that there was about a $750M or so parkwide budget for all improvements (could've been more/less, not sure) including RoL, nighttime safari, expanded Harambe, ToL improvements, expanded shops, new restaurant behind Pizzafari, etc.

Maybe the issues are more than just budgetary problems. Something to think about.

Well yeah, it's the far too many people in positions of power and who affect spending that are part of the problem for one thing.

Now I think you're getting closer to what these issues are probably about. Management decisions on spending, outside vendors & suppliers, contractors. If any of these vendors/contracts are taken for granted and not solidified/signed the entire project's completion date could be in extreme danger. There's only X number of companies out there that can do the work theme parks require to complete a project(s).

lol, you act like I don't know these things. I'm fully aware of everything in your post. I've been around the block a few times and on theme park forums for over 10 years.

I didn't mean it that way.I was just using your really good point as a jumping into the problem opportunity. I apologize if I phrased it wrong. I'm just trying to stretch out the discussion forum poster wise so we can get to the real core of this problem with contributing views/info from others. I'm thinking the budgetary problems may be the least of the worries on this project. Perhaps this isn't going to make it for a 2017 completion date.
