I think they should divide it up into two mini lands. One being Nickelodeon (Spongebob & Dora) and the other being Scooby-Do. (Get rid of/re-theme Woody the Woodpecker and re-furb E.T.)

Do we have any actual confirmation of this from insiders or is this just speculation?

I could see that, especially since they just opened a new Spongebob store that is really well done. However, a new attraction in place of Barney would be great for that area.

Barney is where Scooby should go.

I'm pretty sure someone else has the rights to Scooby Doo.

My advice...drop Kidzone altogether and continue world building..i.e. a Bikini Bottom Land, Scooby Doo Spooky Island, etc..like someone earlier stated, saying one area is 'Kidzone' sends a message that Kids are only supposed to be in that one spot, with Universal's new family initiative it's time to ditch that area of the park

Yep...right now Universal is a theme park with stuff for kids to do while Disney is a theme park for the whole family to enjoy together. Universal is going to want to move more towards the Disney end of the spectrum in that regard if they really want to make an impact on Disney's attendance. And even though Hogwarts Express won't have a height requirement, dementors are still scary as hell, and I don't imagine that ride being family friendly. Hopefully new additions from here on out aren't just without restrictions but also have themes that appeal to everyone...no scary monster attacks/disasters, but also not implementation of properties only relevant to children. Universal can do it easily, they just need the drive.

I don't think Universal wants to do exactly what Disney does, or offer exactly what Disney offers. They want to continue to be successful by doing their own thing, and then try to bridge the gap a bit with adding more rides for those too young / too old / with limitations. But Universal will never be Disney, and thank god for that. There's already a Disney for those that want Disney. Universal just needs to add some more offerings for the aforementioned demographic to increase and maximize their possible attendance, satisfaction and profits.

true, but they also want to be able to attract families. They cant do that now with the age-segregated nature of their attractions that are there now.

I totally agree. If I thought they needed to be Disney I wouldn't be calling for some family friendly attractions like HM and Pirates. I would be calling for more things like Dumbo and Pooh to attract toddlers. Disney will always be Disney, but I do think Uni wants to attract more families and to bridge the gap between them and Disney. And I have always said if you have a family with just one child under the age of 5, Uni is a hard sell. People are not going to want to spend $100 per ticket when part of their family cannot ride very many rides. And when one child can't ride that ride, someone has to stay back in child swap. Which makes for a longer day. Also, some families bring the grandparents down, which also sometimes limits the types of rides you can go on. I love the thrill rides Uni provides, but I do think they need to get some well rounded rides that can be for anyone and everyone enjoys.

On a side note, when it comes to child swap, I love how it is set up. But when I was originally researching it when I had kids, there are many people that complain about how Uni has it set up. Because some children are scared of just the queue and other kids want to ride these types of rides, but are not tall enough. So it teases them by going through the entire line. So if there was more family friendly rides, you may be able to do more and appease those kids who get dragged through the lines.

Kid/Family Rides/Attractions

E.T.
Woody Wood Pecker
Barney
Simpsons
MiB
Disaster
T2 3D (I'd assume is family friendly)
Twister
Shrek 3D
Despicable Me
Animal Actors Show
Beetle Juice Show

That leaves
Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket
The Revenge of The Mummy

for those who seek high thrill. Not a fair count if you ask me.

Islands of Adventure

Kid/Family Rides/Attractions

Cat in the Hat Ride
Suess High in The sky
Poisideons Furry
SinBad
The Harry Potter Stage and Gift Shops
Flying Unicorn
That ride in Jurassic Park people over 48 inches are not allowed to get on.
Camp Jurassic
Popeye
Toon Lagoon Theatre
Spiderman

What is left is
Incredible Hulk
Storm Force Accelerator
Dr. Dooms Fearfall
Dudley DoRight
Jurassic Park River Adventure
Harry Potter Ride
Dueling Dragons Fire
Dueling Dragons Ice

Just seems to me Islands is balanced more than UNI with the ride types unless by definition Family Friendly rides means something completely different than a man, woman, boy, and girl ususally under 18 can go on together than I don't see the need for more family rides. JUST my opinion though.

Exactly. While I think some of the rides you mentioned are more adult friendly than kids, the kids can still ride them. Our mindsets have been so warped by the term "Disney" and what it entails and its getting old. Uni needs to do their thing. They need to find a way to make a few more less intense rides that everyone can enjoy but they need to do it their way.

All of the bold ones have height restrictions so many kids under the age of 5 cannot go on. Some have lower ones (E.T., Woody, Flyers) and therefore kids under 3 can't go on. The fact that you put Spiderman in kids and not thrilling baffles me. That is a thrilling ride and while many kids go on it, it is too thrilling for many. At that rate put Mummy in that category because it does not go upside down :) You put storm force in thrilling and my two year old daughter loves that one. My son though can't go on it because he can't sit up on his own even though he is 2. I hate it because he loves tea cups and not sure why he can't sit on my lap for this one too. We are hoping next time he goes he will sit up better and they will let him ride it.

DM you have to have the motionless seats if under a certain height, which kind of defeats part of the ride. Disaster and Cat in the Hat you have to be able to sit up on your own, which precludes tiny kids and handicapped kids. Twister scared the crap out of my kids and they don't scare easily. Some of the ones left are some of the worst ones in Uni (Barney - won't let my kids see that purple thing, Shrek - everyone wants it replaced)

Again, not asking for kiddie rides, asking for rides with NO height restrictions or health limitations (Spidey and others on your list have health limitations for older people) that the ENTIRE family can enjoy and are REALLY good. Uni does not have enough of those types of rides. It even goes the other way, because flyers is for people under 48, so older kids can't go on that. So if you have a child under 48 and another above 48 you have issues too.

there is a difference between family rides and rides that kids can go on. I don't think most parents or older kids consider the Carousel, One Fish Two Fish, the Trolley, or Hippogriff quality family experiences, and the playgrounds, while impressive, aren't why people pay money to go to theme parks. As for Spider-Man, maybe it could be considered a family ride but it is unsuitable for kids under 40" or for kids frightened by 3-D effects (I used to be one of those kids )

As for your list at Universal, I don't agree with most of it. Beetle Juice, Horror Make Up Show, T2 3-D, and Twister are not only loud (and the latter two are beyond intense if you ask me) but carry PG-13 designations on the park maps, meaning they aren't even aimed at kids. Then when you ex out everything with a height requirement, you have Disaster (could be considered intense considering the noises and fire effects), Woody Woodpecker, ET, and some shows, two of which are no more than glorified short movies.

Sorry, I see what you're trying to do but very few rides at Universal are available for EVERYONE. No Pirates or Haunted Mansion, and the E-tickets generally have height requirements or intense effects. ET and Cat in the Hat are good examples of the rides I think Universal needs (must-do's for everyone in the family, not just little kids or people over a certain age/height), but the problem is one per park doesn't really make a solid family vacation IMO. There's a difference between kid's rides, non-restrictive rides, and quality family rides.

Universal doesn't need more 'family fun' rides. This park wasn't built on rides like Haunted Mansion or Pirates. Universal should stick to thrill rides and rides that kids have the option to go on. When I was 10 and didn't like roller coasters I still had a blast at the parks and didn't complain. Universal does not need to go into Disney's demographic to be successful.

I'd VERY much disagree that Universal wasn't built on rides like Mansion or Pirates. Jaws, Kong, ET, and Earthquake were all family friendly and inclusive. Yes, some were scary, and ET had a height requirement, but everyone COULD ride them. They weren't coasters or thrill rides. Back to the Future was the only original attraction I'd call a thrill ride.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't have rides that everyone can ride. There's a difference between a ride the whole family can ride and a kiddie ride.

I'd hardly call any of the Disney classics kiddie rides.

I rode all of them when I was 3.

But again, that's moot. Universal needs more rides that everyone has the OPTION to ride, whether they choose to or not.

well that's why they don't sport the attendance numbers that Disney does.

For a family of four (a mom, dad, <36" child and an >54" child) what would be a better value? Going to a park where half the family rides big rides while the other half sits and waits or splits up entirely to do their own thing? Or going to a park where they can all ride the big name attractions together? Universal may be doing ok now, but they're missing the key nuclear family demographic that makes up the largest part of the theme park vacation market.

I did as well ( 4 actually but that's also moot) But I think we are talking about a different type of kid.
